British retailers are recommending the Samsung Galaxy S3 more times than any other device according to a mystery shopper survey. The survey showed some retailers offering the iPhone 5 while other manufacturers like Motorola and RIM had little to know presence at all. The survey was carried out by Informa Telecoms and Media who spoke with eight of the top UK retailers.

Apple has released iOS 6.1 beta 5 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This comes just a day before beta 4 was set to expire, and represents one of the longest gaps between beta releases in iOS' history. Furthermore, beta 5 still hasn't shown up over-the-air (OTA), so rather than the faster, more convenient delta-update-in-place, if you want beta 5 now, now, now, you'll have to download it from developer.apple.com and do a complete update via iTunes or Xcode.

As always, this beta is intended for registered developers so they can try out new application program interfaces (API) and make sure their apps are compatible before iOS 6.1 goes into general availability (GA), presumably sometime in the next couple of months.

(If anyone gets the OTA, let us know. It's spoiled us and made us lazy!)

So, how's the anodized aluminum on your iPhone 5 holding up? You know, the chamfer that runs along the display, and the unibody in silver or slate that covers the sides and most of the back of your iPhone? When Apple first announced the latest generation iPhone, there were some concerns that the aluminum was soft, the anodization didn't include sufficient layers, and that it was, in general, too easy to chip, dent, and otherwise scuff. Well, the iPhone 5 has been on the market for just over four months now, plenty of time to get a realistic idea of how it works in, and holds up to, the demands of everyday life.

During Apple's Q1 2013 conference call, when asked about the mix of iPhone 5 compared to the lower priced iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 still on the market, Apple CEO Tim Cook responded that not much had changed from last year's iPhone 4S mix relative to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G, then the discount options.

As part of their Q1 2013 conference call, Apple's CEO Tim Cook announced that the iPhone 5 would gain LTE 4G data service on 36 additional carriers next week. The iPhone 5 currently enjoys LTE on carriers in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. Korea, Germany, and Japan, among others. Slower than anticipated global LTE rollouts, however, have kept the numbers relatively low.

Never mind rumors of an awkwardly named 4.8-inch "iPhone Math", the concept of a much larger iPhone has been floating about ever since the realities of early LTE chipsets -- and the batteries that came with them -- forced Android and Windows-based competitors to break the size barrier.
