SlingPlayer Mobile now available for iPad
Sling Media has released SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPad, allowing users to watch content streaming from their cable service provider, DVR or TiVo device anywhere they are. Users of the popular SlingBox can purchase the app in the App Store for $29.99.
SlingPlayer was initially released for iOS back in January, but was tied to the iPhone and iPod Touch. This isn't a universal binary either but a while new app so yes, if you already have it for iPhone you do have to buy it again for iPad.
Let us know if you think the big 9.7-inch iPad screen makes it worth the money, and if it does, how the app is working for you in the comments below!

They really need to update the iPhone app before introducing any more new victims to the frey
Is the difference in resolution worth the $29.99 or just stick with the iPhone version on the iPad?
First you have to have fast enough internet for your iPad, right?

I'm sorry - they want ANOTHER $30 from me!! This should have been an update to add the Universal binary to the original iPhone app. I guess I will make do with the scaling. Honestly over most internet connections I won't notice. they still do not support HD streaming from my Mac (they do for Windows).
AussieAbroad they ABSOLUTELY DO support HD streaming via Mac...You need to go to their website and upgrade your software. I have been watching HD for over 4 months on my iMac and MacBook Air...So take a deep breath and relax.
Can anyone tell us how the stream compares to the iPhone app when X2 for iPad using 3G?
Is it grainy or looking sharp?
Sling player for iPad is worth every penny as it is really nice on the iPad. This is a big improvement over the iPhone version in resolution, guide, favorites and the entire UI.
I you own a Slingbox it is a no brained! I have no issue paying for the iPad version as it is greatly improved.
@Scott
You may want to get some new glasses! The mac version of SlingPlayer, even the very latest does NOT stream in HD, only SD. The Windows version does support HD. If you want HD on a Mac you must use Firefox and stream from Sling.com! I own two slingboxes and have both Macs and Windows machines. I also use Sling on my iPhone and Android phone. I paid the thirty bucks for each mobile app and they are worth it. I even once bought the Windows Mobile version years ago when that was my smartphone (glad that is gone).
Below is copied from the sling website:
Its about damn time! The iPhone version on iPad is pretty bad. I thinks its bs for them to charge another $30 though. BUT... It does look great! THIS is what I've been waiting for! All that's left is a faster connection and a better way of adding favorites but otherwise it was worth the $30. Well done Sling! looks good over 3G.
@eTron
Adding favorites on the new iPad app is easy and well done! They are using Apple's media player in this app.
Ipad version is awesome ... but it is bs to charge another $30 for those that already bought the iphone version. Like the product not the company.
I'm missing the point? What's the difference if you go to the website and stream in HD or open the icon on your Mac desktop and stream the same content?? At the end of the day your streing hd content on your Mac just like windows.
I should clarify. I understand if you open the Slingbox app on your Mac it is SD. But if you go to their website it's full hd. So build a bookmark on your desktop to sling.com and get your content in hd
I have it when companies release two different versions of the same app (iPhone and iPad), making you pay twice.
I will never buy their products, too expensive. Those apps should have been free or cheaper 9.99 after paying $299 for a box.
@Scott
There is nothing wrong with streaming Slingbox in HD from Firefox on your Mac, but you told the guy he had to upgrade his software. The more versatile Sling app is ONLY SD and has missed several upgrade cycles as compared to the Windows.
I will point out to you that Sling's plug in only works on Firefox and does not support Safari on the Mac. You need to drop your Safari to 32 bit mode o get it to work at all on Safari. The Sling forum is FULL of issues with this plug in working on a Mac! I just tried to help a friend last night get the plug in to work on his brand new Mac, after 5 hours and no answers from Sling he finally got it to work in 32 bit mode in Safari, but still not in Firefox!
This is not exactly showing much support for the Mac when they do not even have an app to work properly with the latest Mac without going thru hoops. I know some Mac users who ONLY installed Firefox just for Sling! So I ask you, IF Sling has no desktop app that streams HD and no plug in for Safari on Snow Leopard which has been out for a year, IS THIS REALLY SUPPORTING MAC USERS?
No Mac user should have to go thru hoops to get Sling HD streaming working on their Mac after spending $299 for a Sling Pro HD! Since I also use Windows, I can tell you the free SlingPlayer for Windows is far better than the old Mac version, not only for HD streaming but for the way it works with the guide and the UI.
Sling makes a great product, but they have a terrible track record for Mac support and is a slow company that is known for lots of vaporware and terrible support. Try using the SlingCatcher projector software.
