The holidays, when opportunistic "Apple-is-doomed!" marketshare headlines get turned on their heads

Market share is pretty badly reported all year long. It's a difficult metric to understand, and an even more difficult one to put into context. Yet sensationalistic Apple-is-doomed "markset share" headlines get foisted on us all year long, but for the brief respite during holiday shopping seasons where just as sensationalistic Apple-is-king "usage share" numbers allow for a brief palette cleanser. The truth remains the same - very few people can tell you what they really mean, and even fewer can tell you why the really matter to the industry, to apple, to developers, or to us, the consumers. All that aside, it looks like Apple iOS devices get used a crapton around the holiday shopping season. How far you choose to extrapolate that in terms of customer profile or device segmentation is up to you, but here are the reports:

Overall device shipments to increase 5.9% as smartphone and tablet markets start to shift

Combined worldwide shipments of smartphones, tablets, and traditional computers are set to grow 5.9% this year, almost completely on the strength of tablets and smartphones, both of which are seeing users trend towards less-expensive devices. Shipments of traditional PCs, desktops and notebooks, will continue to decline as those of mobile devices, particularly smartphones, pick up steam.

Apple reportedly still the top smartphone seller in the US, and still growing!

How's this for doomed? Apple was once again the top smartphone vendor in the three months ending in April of this year, capturing 39.2% of the market for that period. According to the latest comScore report, Apple's share grew 1.4% in a U.S. smartphone market of 138.5 million people. Samsung grew 0.6% to 22%, while HTC, Motorola, and LG all fell less than 1%.

iPad accounted for 1 in 6 PC shipments in Q4 2012

One in six personal computers (PCs) shipped in Q4 of 2012 was an iPad. That's according to Canalys, who also reported that worldwide PC shipments were up 12% over the same quarter in 2011, with 134 million PCs sold. Canalys counts tablets in the PC category, and those devices made up one third of all PC sales in Q4. In total, Apple shipped 27 million units, with HP in second at 15 million PCs shipped. Canalys attributes Apple’s tablet growth to strong demand for the iPad mini:

iPhone passes 51% marketshare in US

The iPhone continued it’s upward motion for marketshare in the US, capturing 51.2% of the US smartphone market, this is an increase of 6.3% from the same period last year. Android now holds 44.2% of the US smartphone market, down .4% from the same quarter last year. These numbers come after the first full quarter after the launch of the iPhone 5. These numbers break Apple’s previous marketshare record of 49.3%, seen after they launched the iPhone 4S, and were reportedly helped by the iPhone 5 and older iPhone models.

iOS takes top marketshare spot from Android on iPhone 5 enthusiasm

iOS on phones (i.e., the iPhone) has reportedly overtaken Android on phones (i.e. dozens and dozens of different phones) in marketshare, accounting for 48.1% of US smartphone sales, ahead of Android’s 46.7%. This follows the release of the iPhone 5, and not coincidentally, the last time Apple saw this share of the market was after last year’s iPhone 4S launch.

Canalys recognizes iPads as PCs, boosts Apple to #3

While others keep iPad ghettoized as a "media tablet" analyst firm Canalys is boldly classifying it as just another PC form factor and in so doing, shooting Apple up to #3 on the worldwide marketshare chart behind HP and Acer but ahead of Dell and Lenovo.

Canalys urges vendors to accept new market realities, by recognizing pads as an integral new component of the overall PC landscape. Unlike other analyst companies, Canalys incorporates pad shipments, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and Apple’s iPad, in its total PC market report.
