Smart Cover

Leanna's most used iPhone and iPad accessories of 2011

Like Chris Oldroyd, my most used iPhone and iPad accessories consists of a very short list. There are only have a few that I regularly used during the past year. Most of what I used was for device protection and power supply, with the exception of one accessory that enhanced my iPad experience for specific scenarios.

2011 iMore Editors Choice Awards

The TiPb staff picks their favorite devices, features, stories, and new or majorly updated apps and accessories of 2011!

The TiPb editors, writers, contributors, forum admins and moderators, and podcasters have come together to nominate and select the winners of the 2011 TiPb Editors Choice Awards. They were all tough choices, and a lot of things we love simply didn't qualify for consideration -- weren't new or weren't majorly updated for 2011. But a lot of really, truly great stuff was. These, then, are our picks of the year.

Apple updates its iPad 2 Smart Covers, kills off the orange one

Apple has updated its iPad 2 line of Smart Covers, killing off the orange polyurethane version and replacing it with a much more tasteful dark gray version. It has also improved the other colors in the polyurethane range, which it claims are now more vibrant -- they all now come with a color matched microfiber lining too. The leather versions haven't been changed except with the addition of the color matched microfiber lining.

The Smart Covers are available in the Apple Store and are still priced at $39 for the Polyurethane model and $69 for the Leather version.

Smart Cover security flaw allows limited iPad 2 passcode bypass

A potential security flaw involving the iPad 2 on iOS 5 and Apple's Smart Cover's ability to bypass the Passcode Lock is making the rounds this week.

a Smart Cover can essentially unlock an iPad 2. The person who unlocks your iPad 2 will not have complete access to your iPad, but will be able to gain entrance to whatever you locked your iPad 2 on. If your iPad 2 went to sleep in Mail, Safari, Messages, Contacts, or Maps, you can imagine the sorts of personal information that can be viewed on your iPad.

Original iPad can use the Smart Cover, with a little work [video]

If you are hanging onto your original iPad but really want one of the new Smart Covers for iPad 2, now you can. Dan Provost has discovered that by simply super gluing a few small magnets to the side of your iPad 1, the case fits and works very nicely.

The video after the break shows how it is done and although it does sound a little rough and ready, the final result is actually quite neat. If you decide to remove the case in the future, you’re still going to be literally stuck with the magnets on the side of your iPad, so be aware before you try this for yourself.

Folding of the cover to allow the iPad to stand up looks a little precarious but in the raised typing wedge mode it looks fine. The one missing feature, is the iPad does not automatically turn on and off when opening and closing the cover.

Is anyone willing to give this a go? Let us know in the comments!
