Speck CandyShell Grip case for iPhone 6s review

Speck's CandyShell Grip Case (opens in new tab) is a sharp-looking case for your iPhone 6s with rubber ridges along the back.

Fit and finish

The pattern on the CandyShell Grip Case reaches up around the sides, ensuring that your iPhone 6s won't slip no matter how you're holding it. That rubber layer also provides baseline impact protection along the interior.

To top it all off is a hard plastic casing that has enough flexibility to permit installation while still giving some scratch protection to the rubber. As for input access, you have big chunky passthrough buttons for the power and volume keys, while opening for headphones, Lightning adapter, speaker, mute switch, and camera are there. The headphone jack has a little bit of extra room to accommodate a variety of 3.5 mm plugs.

Speck earns extra points for offering this case in so many colors. I'm digging the black and white myself, but no matter which color of iPhone you ended up owning, you'll easily find something that suits your style. As for sheer impact protection, I've been perfectly happy with what the CandyShell Grip offers. The extra raised lip around the front face adds a lot of confidence.

The worst thing I could say about the CandyShell Grip case is that it fits the iPhone 6s almost too snugly. It takes a fair bit of force to push just one corner through the camera gap, and even that's not enough to fully push the iPhone out. You'll still need to do some prying on the other corners to be set. That said, you certainly don't have to worry about your case accidentally slipping off; the Speck CandyShell Grip is extremely secure.

Bottom line

The two main selling points here are the extra grip afforded by the rubber backing and the wide range of color schemes available. Models for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are available, and they're confirmed as compatible for the previous generation of iPhones. If those are high priorities, go and snag one of these. You won't regret it.

  • I've been lucky enough to pick up 2 or 3 speck cases over the years at five below... For $5 of course.
  • where?
  • I've had this case for the iPhone 6 Plus for around 6 months. It's been a great case. I typically only put my phone in a case if I know I'll be out an about. At home or at the office I prefer to leave it off. I did notice the extra snug fit mentioned in the review for the first month or two. After a while it loosens to the point where it's not a struggle to get the phone in and out -- though it's certainly still perfectly secure. I think this case is easy to recommend to anyone looking for a good amount of protection without adding a ton of bulk.
  • How did you get your case off of your phone?
  • Had this Speck design for both our iPhone 5 . The hard plastic is beautiful but cracks easily around the lighting connector area. Sent from the iMore App
  • I've used the regular Speck Candyshell and the grip version with an iPhone 6. They both work great. I agree they are tough to take off. I think they are great cases that strike a good balance between thickness and protection.
  • I have one for my iPhone 6s. How did you take yours off of your iPhone 6?
  • Carefully. I would start with taking it off the top by peeling it back from both corners at once. It may feel like you're bending the phone a little bit, but you're really not.
  • i have iPhone 5 and unable to buy iPhone 6 due to some monetary issue.
