Apple apparently wants to help boost overall sales of its iPhone devices in India by cutting the price of its older iPhone 5s in that country. This was reportedly done due to slow sales of the newer and more expensive iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

The Times of India reports:

iPhone 5s prices now starts at Rs 24,999, down from Rs 44,500 in September. This makes Indian price of iPhone 5s one of the lowest globally, despite the depreciating rupee and higher import taxes making India among markets where Apple products cost the most, retailers and analysts said.

Even though the iPhone 5s is over two years old, it reportedly still takes up almost half of all iPhone sales in India:

According to trade sources, the US tech giant's latest move is triggered by its plans to double India sales in the crucial December quarter, a high sales period for Apple globally as it's the launch period of new iPhones. Analysts said Apple's price cut of iPhone 5s is part of its strategy to build a stronger portfolio in the mid-segment smartphone market.

The report says that Apple wants to concentrate its iPhone sales in the mid-range price range of between Rs 16,000 and Rs 27,000, with the idea that consumers will later get a newer model when it's time to upgrade.
