Google has revamped Google Image search results on the iPad (and other tablets) and implemented a new carousel style user interface making it much easier to navigate. Gone are the days of viewing the full resolution image and having to go back to the results to see the next one; here are the days of simply swiping to the next full resolution image! Need more information on a particular image? Not a problem as all you have to do is tap the link in the lower left corner and the site begins to load. From the outside it looks exactly the same, but the new functionality is another page in Google’s redesign book.

The iPad version of the Google Search app received a pretty big update today. It features a revamped UI that provides feedback the moment you begin to type. After tapping a result, the page with load in a a new slide-in pane so that you can continue to scroll through results while it loads. You can also check out snapshots of pages you’ve visited in the new carousel view.

Check out the video of Google Search for iPad in action below.

Once you pick a web page to visit, you’ll see the page load on a new, slide-in pane that will layer over the search results. You can slide the pane to the right to get back to your search results, and even keep scrolling through the results as your web page is loading. This allows you to go back and forth from results to web pages quickly to get the information you are looking for.

Often you may be looking to find something you have seen before again or are continuing research on a topic. But on a tablet, typing can be a challenge. That is why we have created a visual way to explore your search history. Swipe right to view snapshots of pages you’ve visited, stacked and organized by search term. You can also manage your search history from this new view.

See search results and websites side-by-side to browse pages and results

Get to the right answer faster with Instant Previews and Google Instant

See images full-screen with image browsing

New visual UI for search history

Easy access to other Google apps

IconCommands lets jailbroken iOS users customize what happens when they tap on icons. Want to set up gestures for additional taps? Don’t like holding down to delete apps and want a quicker solution? Once downloaded, with IconCommands you can head over to your settings and set up all that and more.

For example, you can set two taps to display application info and three taps to delete the app. There are also several other options including restart springboard, search Google, switch to Safe Mode, hide, and many more. I found this to be a super fast way to search the web, respring, delete, and hide icons. Much easier than jumping into SBSettings to hide icons. It’s also much easier than jumping into Safari to search the web. I simply tap any icon four times and it brings up a prompt to search the web.

You can find IconCommands in Cydia for $1.99.

[$1.99 - Cydia Store Link]

Google is continuing their bold new design initiative, tweaking the search experience on iPad for web results, image results, and more.

The search button located below the search box provides quick access to specific types of results like Images, Videos, Places, Shopping and more. Just tap to open the search menu and select an option to see results in one category.

For image results, we focused on improvements that enhance the viewing experience such as enlarged image previews, continuous scroll, and faster loading of image thumbnails.

Google held their Inside Search event today, and once again the focus is on speed and convenience, especially in mobile. For iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users, this means faster local searches and faster suggested searches in Safari. (Or your WebKit browser of choice on other mobile platforms.)

Local search:

On the results page, you’ll see a map with markers for your current location and places around you. When you scroll through the results, the map remains at the top of the page and adjusts automatically to the listing you are looking at. That way, you can see the listing information while still getting location context from the map. Tapping on a result will quickly show you more about a place including reviews and other useful details. Discovering great places nearby has never been easier on your mobile phone.

Suggested search builds:

Another mobile improvement we’ve introduced today is an easier way to build longer, more complicated searches. You can now add suggested phrases to the search box and “build” your search piece by piece. This feature is already available on the Google Search app for Android and iOS devices and we’re now making this available on www.google.com from your mobile browser. Watch the video below to see how you can search faster with less typing.

It works on iOS 4 compatible browsers (and presumably iOS 5 as well). Google announced a lot of other improvements for their non-mobile search today as well, like Instant, improved Voice and Image, etc. so hit up the Google Inside Search link below for the bigger picture.

Then go search Safari and tell us what you think.

TiPb nation, we’re in the process of rolling out some updates to the site that we’re really excited about, including Disqus comments, Google search, and +1 buttons.

Disqus is commenting system that offers a lot more options than our previous, built in version. You can login with a Disqus account if you have one, but also with Facebook, Twitter, and other logins you may already have later. It also gives us better moderation controls so hopefully it will cut down on the spam… and the trolls!

Google search is just much better than what we had before. The old search was chronological so you got the last post about a certain term, not the best, most relevant one. It will also let you search across the blog, forum, and store (or choose to filter based on just one of those if you prefer.) Now all the Google power is yours on TiPb.

+1 is a way to show your love for a particular post, to tell people it’s cool and help your friends and contacts find it, if it’s of interest to them. It joins our existing Facebook Like, Tweet, LinkedIn, and Buzz buttons, because choice matters, dagnabit!

And there’s more to come. Lots more. So here’s where I turn it all around and make it about you — what else do you want from TiPB? What cool features would you love to have?

Earlier today Google rolled out their Instant Previews feature for mobile devices like iPhone. The feature adds elegant thumbnail previews to your search results and works perfectly on your iPhone or iPod touch, even bearing a resemblance to the way Mobile Safari handles tab management.

Instant Previews has been available on the desktop since last year but I never found myself actually using it. I’ve only been playing with it on my iPhone for a few minutes but can already tell you I’ll be using Instant Previews a lot more on the go than I ever did on the desktop. Just tap the little magnifying glass next to your search results to see Instant Previews in action.

If you don’t have your iPhone handy then check out the video after the break to get a better idea of how it works, and don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments!

UPDATE 2: The error turns out to be the human kind (via GeekBrief.tv):

We periodically receive updates to that list and received one such update to release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here’s the human error), the URL of ‘/’ was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and ‘/’ expands to all URLs. Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file. Since we push these updates in a staggered and rolling fashion, the errors began appearing between 6:27 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. and began disappearing between 7:10 and 7:25 a.m., so the duration of the problem for any particular user was approximately 40 minutes.

UPDATE: Looks like it’s fixed. Anyone still seeing the problem?

Looks like Google Search may be having some trouble this morning! As I write this, every search on Google, including searches for Google, get flagged as “may harm your computer” and if you click the link, you get an intercept page with an even bigger warning.

I’m guessing the engineers in Mountain View are on it, so enjoy the fun-making while it lasts!

NOTE: It only seems to be broken (for me!) if you’re not logged in (i.e. not logged into Gmail or any other Google service). If you’re logged in, Google search returns results normally.

[Thanks Antony for the tip!]

I’m sure that a few of you, like me, have been avoiding using the Google Search Bar in Safari in favor of the Google app. Avoiding it not because the Google App is that awesome (it is), but because the search results page in Safari that comes up when you use the Google Search Bar wasn’t optimized for Safari, but instead looked like the regular desktop page.

Well, quick tip if you’ve been avoiding that bar: it’s been mobile optimized while you were away. No need to avoid it anymore. The above search results screen shot shows what the new (to me, anyway) results page looks like. Chad emailed in (with more than a few exclamation points) showing the same.

Treat this Public Service Announcement like all PSAs — if you don’t care, move along, nothing to see here, threat-level orange, and all that. But If you’ve been keeping away from that search bar, it’s time to come back home.
