5 years ago today, Steve Jobs took to the Macworld 2007 stage and introduced 3 new products — a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough internet communicator. An iPod, a phone, an internet communicator. We got it. They weren’t 3 seperate devices. They were one device.

They called it iPhone.

One year ago today Apple released the original iPad Wi-Fi (the 3G version followed at the end of the month). A lot of us here at TiPb, staff and readers placed our online orders or lined up in person to bring one home and have been enjoying them ever since.

For nostalgia’s sake, here’s TiPb’s original iPad launch day coverage, our original iPad review, and our iPad 6 months later retrospective. Whether you’ve had your iPad for a year now, got it at some point in between, waited for iPad 2, or are still waiting and trying to decide if iPad is for you, take a look back and then share your thoughts with us.

What do you think of iPad one year later?

A year ago today many of us were standing in line outside our local Apple Store waiting to get our geeky little hands on the iPhone 3GS, then king of the mobile space. Twice the speed, video recording, and VoiceControl were the killer features, even if the form factor was unchanged.

Over the last twelve months, iPhone 3GS has served us well, and at its soon-to-be $99 price point, rocking iOS 4, no doubt it will serve many budget smartphone shoppers well for another year to come. (Seriously, we feel bad for the Pixi, Kin, Pearl, and others in its new space).

So, on the cusp of iPhone 4‘s release, we wish iPhone 3GS a happy birthday.

If you’ve been using an iPhone 3GS over the last year, let us know how it’s worked for you.

One year ago today Apple held their iPhone 3.0 SDK Sneak Peak event and released iPhone 3.0 Beta 1, giving all of us our first look at cut, copy, and paste, MMS, tethering, Spotlight search, Voice Memo, in-app purchases, turn-by-turn navigation, stereo Bluetooth, pervasive landscape keyboard, P2P gaming, and whole bunch more.

Now, a year later, we’ve gone to version 3.1.3 release and 3.2 beta, from 30 million iPhone and iPod touch devices on the market to over 75 million (and 150 thousand iPad pre-orders), and don’t even get us started about the apps.

So happy birthday iPhone 3.0, and if it isn’t indelicate of us to say, should you see iPhone 4.0 lounging around the Apple labs, please do tell it to hurry along and send out invites for its debut. We’re about ready to celebrate the next big preview.

One year ago today people were lining up outside Apple Stores. Woz was handing out snacks. El Jobso was making surprise cameos. Scoble was screaming. Leo was chatting up the Google devs. Mossberg was flaunting his demo. Colbert was begging for his. Vloggers were vlogging and boy-oh-boy bloggers were blogging. The mainstream media was going gaga. Mike was live at the Mall of America. Dieter was right here, online, keeping us all up to date.

It was launch day USA. The original iPhone. 2G. Premium priced. Industry changing. Handset revolutionizing. Universe denting.

Now, with the iPhone 3G all but upon us, everyone here at theiPhoneBlog.com would like to wish the focus of our obsession, and all the techies at Apple behind it, a very happy birthday.

The iPhone comes in 8GB and 16GB. That’s a lot of capacity fill. And where do we get content enough to fill that capacity? No, not the torrentz (JAR!) — iTunes!

5 years ago, Apple realized that if they wanted to sell iPods, they needed to give people stuff to load onto those iPods. Now, what originally began as a Mac-only 200,000 song sparkle in the eye of Steve Jobs, has grown into the cross-platform (except for Linux!), multi-billion track served (some even DRM-free!), #1 music retailer, not to mention the foundation pillar of podcasts, with nearly a gazillion free audio (including our very own Phone Different Podcast!) and video programs there for the downloading.

Happy birthday, iTunes. And here’s to many more.

(And let’s work on getting the recording industry to give us the rest of those tracks DRM-free, and on some international movie and television content, b’okay?)
