GMYLE MacBook Pro case review: Style and protection for less

I recently purchased a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and I wanted to keep it safe from damage. I purchased the AppleCare+ in case of major trauma, but I like to keep my expensive electronics pristine, without so much as a scratch. For the everyday bumps my computer goes through, a snap-on shell case is just the thing, but I didn't want to spend $50 for a case like the InCase one sold in the Apple Store. So I went to Amazon.

I came across the ridiculously named GMYLE, which caught my eye because of its pretty floral pattern. I chose the Pink Plum Blossom Floral Garden pattern, though there are more than two dozen patterns and colors from which to choose, including plain black or navy.

At a fraction of the Apple Store price, I wasn't disappointed.

The Good

  • Lightweight
  • Stylish, with lots of color and pattern options
  • Doesn't impede MacBook Pro's functionality
  • Protective
  • Low cost

The Bad

  • Not super easy to put on and take off

A perfect fit

This particular case will only fit the MacBook Pros released in 2016 or later, but of course, if you check out GMYLE's Amazon storefront, you'll find versions for many other models.

When the case arrived, it looked exactly like its photo and I loved it immediately. Before buying, I noticed that several reviewers complained that the bottom did not fit the computer, so I was a little bit worried about that. The bottom portion did indeed take some finagling to snap on. You have to slide it on from the back, and then snap it into place. But it does fit.

The entire case fits my MacBook Pro perfectly.

Four barely noticeable tabs on the top and four on the bottom hold it in place securely. There is no lip coming up over the edge and only the tabs are slightly raised. All of the laptop's ports are still fully accessible and the shell doesn't get in the way at all. There are four rubberized feet on the bottom to keep your laptop from slipping around your desk as you type. The bottom is also well ventilated so your laptop won't overheat.

The Verdict

I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and haven't had any issues. There aren't even any scratches on the case itself. The entire case is lightweight and doesn't add much bulk to the MacBook Pro.

I'm pretty familiar with InCase cases sold at the Apple Store, and I think the GMYLE's quality is on par with it. The only edge I think the InCase has is that the tabs used to hold the shell in place are slightly larger, so the case may be easier to put on and take off.

All in all, the GMYLE is a great bargain at less than $15, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again, maybe in another style or color.
