I was forced back to Apple. My previous laptop was a Dell, my previous desktop an XP box I built myself, and my previous handsets Palm and WinMob.

Had they done anything approaching a modern, usable OS, I'd still be with them.

Wanting something that was actually enjoyable to use, and needing something that worked, I had no choice but to go with Apple. Now I'm stuck only one terminal launch away from UNIX. Shudder.

I missed where “most” people bought the iPhone. Did Apple already sell 500 million? Surur

heh heh. Point taken. Though I would be curious what percentage of people (at least in the U.S.) who are actually in the market for new phones either purchase or at least seriously consider iphone. Given that it’s such a pain to buy it (most people would have to switch carriers, may not have decent coverage, etc.), I’m guessing the percentage is quite high. Not “most,” but certainly impressive.

Of course, I’m in Silicon Valley, so there’s an iphone in every crowd. I recognize penetration in europe is far less.

A final point: most people who I know who own iphones own no other apple products (except ipods). I would hardly characterize them as “apple snobs.”

And, personally, I’m a unix snob, not an apple snob. My disdain for windows started to form long before I ever owned an apple product, mostly because you can’t properly resize the terminal windows and the commandline sucks.

Have you bought your second yet, Surur? "people" want everything for nothing. Therefore everything is over priced. Therefore nothing is. Personally, I would have to get paid to use the next WinVistaMob brick, so $1 would be overpriced to me. Do you see how that becomes a fairly useless point of debate?

Lucky you are not "most people", are you. You've a very special "Apple user".

What does "over priced" mean? That we're not paying low enough slave wages to third world countries to produce even more for even less? (I'm just shooting Artie McStrawmen there, but I do cringe when people throw around the "over priced" meme willy-nilly...)

Over priced Over priced Over priced Over priced . . . Ok, now that you've gotten over your cringing, overprices means most people dont think its worth the price. Maybe some small percentage do, but they tend to be Apple snobs.

And for Apple, not living up to the hype is tantamount to failing, and the iPhone certainly failed to set the more mature European market a light.

Surur, thanks for the link, but I don’t see from that story that the iPhone is failing in Europe. O2 sold 160,000, which is below their target but not bad for an overpriced phone. I think part of O2′s problem is, many people bought an unlocked iPhone and stayed with their current carriers.
