Apple set to launch iPhone 5 in October, not September as previously thought?
All Things D has heard from reliable sources that the iPhone 5 will not be launching until October. It was previously thought that the iPhone 5 would launch by September at the very latest.
Sources with knowledge of the situation say reports claiming AT&T has blacked out employee vacations during the last two weeks of September in preparation for the retail debut of the next iPhone are misinformed. Instead, it’s going to be an October surprise — the month in which Apple will be launching its next generation iPhone. All Things D is usually well connected with sources familiar with Apple products; so this could be a very reliable snippet of information. The only concrete information we have so far is the release of iOS 5 in the fall. No new iPhone would be released until iOS 5 is ready to roll. Fall does not even start until September 23, which would make October a more likely month for iPhone 5 after all.
It will be interesting to see if Apple has its usual early September iPod event; surely iPhone 5 would have to be announced either before that or at the same time!

blah blah blah blah , blah
Just release IOS 5 already ffs !!
Why is everyone assuming that the iPhone 5 will be announced at the traditional September iPod event? Apple could easily hold their iPod event in early September (e.g. iPod nano, iPod touch, iPod touch 3G and Apple TV) and a separate iPhone event in early October. This would especially make sense if the iPod touch series is getting separated from the October iPhone hardware base and offered in a WiFi and 3G version (like the iPad).
So August is no longer a possibility? Say it ain't so!
Perhaps Apple is trying to make us grateful for a September launch?
At this point I dont really care when it's actually coming out, I just want to know what the hell it looks like and whats on the inside.
Seriously. +1
Seriously +2

I hope they can get a 4g chip in there with all this extra time they are taking.
I have been one of the biggest supporters of the "The next iPhone is NOT going to have a 4G chip" - up until this rumor. If they delay it until late October? It really could be 4G. It could also be called the iPhone 4G.
Counterpoint on all that? Is AT&T's true 4G network (LTE) going to be ready? I know Verizon is on a tear, I live in upstate SC, and they'be been crazy expanding it even here. Just not familiar with what AT&T is up to (are they calling HSPA+ 4G like T-Mobile?)
Either case, the longer it takes for the next iPhone to come out? The better my iPhone 4 pre-order from Verizon looks. Even then, when people would ask me "Why don't you just wait until June to get the next iPhone?" I would say, "How do we know there WILL be a new iPhone in June? That Verizon will get it at launch?" Sorry for the rant, I just like being right.
I'd put money no it not having 4g. For a world phone like the iphone, 4g really isn't in many places. Apple doesn't rush into markets like that. I'd also put money on it not being called 4g. Apple likes to be neat with it's naming. I think now they've caught up with the 3gs nonsense to integers.,. i think they'll stick with them. It's simple for people to understand and they like that. Simple product lines from top to bottom.
Great points. Ultimately I agree with you. 4G isn't ready for prime time, as they say, and the US carriers road-maps indicate mid to late 2012 for a broad coverage time frame. Also agree that 4G as a phone name makes no sense, or less sense than the confusion it brings.
Plus, since I really wanted to try and get 18 months or so out of my iPhone 4, and am only 6 months in? I hope for the 5 in late Sept/early Oct, and iPhone 6 (LTE at that point??) a year later in 2012.
agreed, i think the UK carriers road-maps are similar or even later from what I've read. IP6 when you said would make a lot of sense. funny, i'm hoping to get more time out of the IP4 as well, so the later it's released the better - it's bitter sweet tho, because I would happily take iOS5 now.
One word.... THUNDERBOLT
I see what you are trying to say but they are different things. Apple will want to launch 4G and show off the speed. If they did that in the UK there's no network to support it. What would be the point if you can't use it for a year ?
Don't forget.... the iPhone is on over 200 carriers around the globe. And international iPhone growth is outpacing US growth.
Is there one standard for LTE that would work on all carriers in the world?
BTW... where in Upstate SC are you from? I used to live in Easley
i have heard rumors that it will ave a 4G chip, probably a Qualcomm of some sort... i would hope so for all you IPhone people out there, 4G is really awesome. from what i have noticed all the networks' "4G" get around 3-7 Mbps. which is huuuge over 3G. i have a EVO 3D and i get around .3 Mbps on 3G and around 4 Mbps on 4G. Simple web browsing doesn't get much help from that but streaming video becomes waaayy less of a hassle... also having a duel-core processor really takes it to another level. Google maps loads sooooo fast. its going to be interesting to see what Apple brings to the table in Oct.
I get over 5 Mbps on 3G, but not in all places in the city.
5.08 Mbps this morning, Phoenix. I think they upgraded Phoenix a couple of weeks ago, because man we were having network problems for about 2 weeks and before that I only got around 2 Mbps.
Damn I get 3-4 on AT&T 3G in williamsville NY. Their 4g better be at least 5-7 to be worth it. I don't see the new one having 4g either. Doesnt make any sense to have it anyway as it only available in a few cities. Just like when the evo came out. It was a 4g phone but 4g on sprint was only in a few places.
Fine by me. It was looking like it was going to be launched when I was abroad. By all means, keep it back, please!
c'mon man steve, youre breaking my balls here
I'm waiting for iPhone 6!!!!!!
Just make it work on T-Mobile 3G...
Keep the rumors alive. Push the date back by a month, every month.
I have several iOS5 related development tutorials to release on http://ios-blog.co.uk but cant until iOS 5 comes out for obvious reasons, this delay is not cool :/
can't wait to buy it
I can't wait till the new iPhone comes out. I hope it is a all new design though, seeing how they had so many problems with the iPhone 4.
This is news how? Apple's going to launch when they launch. And the mass numbers of people will wait in the pouring rain outside for 6 days to be the first in line to get the newest greatest most wonderful thing that Steve Jobs says you simply can't live without or you'll die... you'll just die!!!
Sad that they won't do that to help an elderly person cross the street, or take some kids to school in a car pool or actually get out and go for a walk in the sunshine every now & then (hint: it's good for you).
Priorities people... it's a phone.
announcement in September release in October that is what I think
If the launch is pushed back I hope it's because Apple is going all out with productivity tionand making iphones by the truckload. If they can manage the launch of a new product without massive shortages of inventory for once the delay would be more than acceptable.
I suppose this is what happen they release a phone like the iPhone 4 and get bad press .. they take more than a year to develop and test a new version. Im tired of waiting though.
August, September, October. Nobody knows when it's really coming out but Apple. So until they say their having a event. Nobody knows shyt plain and simple.
Having an iPhone is one kind of luxury now a days. I am curiously waiting for Apple iPhone 5.
