How to quickly dismiss iOS 5 banner notifications on iPhone, iPad
How to quickly and easily get rid of iOS 5 banner notifications -- the little roll-downs you get in-app and on the home screen -- seems to be a hot topic for our tipsters this week, and luckily you can do it in a couple of different ways.
- Touch and pull down slightly on the banner, then flick it up and away. (You're really activating Notification Center for a moment, but it has such a terrific, tactile feeling to it.)
- "Swipe" from right to left. (You're really not swiping, it's a subtle down up motion that's a faster but not as reliable version of the above.)
In both cases you need to be really careful you touch and keep your finger down, otherwise it will be interpreted as a tap and you'll be whooshed away to another app, likely the exact the opposite of what you wanted.
Either way, it does nothing to fix the central problems of banners -- they roll down over content instead of pushing the content down, and they come in surprisingly enough that you can be about to tap a top-bar control only to hit a new notification instead.
Hopefully some sort of visual cue will be added, and the page content slid down, in a future update.

Moving the screen down will not solve anything either since you could just as easily be going to tap something at the bottom of the screen when an alert pushes it down.
If you get that many notifications that even banners are annoying you probably should set the alert style to None. Sounds and badges can still be on and I believe they can also still show up in the notification center.

I don't receive a bombardment of notifications, so the old popups were okay with me to begin with. I guess people who constantly receive umpteen notifications, all day and all night, for every app on their phones, will never be happy with any implementation.

True. They want to be interrupted, but they don't want to be interrupted. Next they'll want to be able to only notify for messages from John but not Jane, etc. Of course, an alternative would be to just manage your life better and exercise some restraint on notifications.

I also don't like the idea of pushing content away under my finger when a notification comes in. Besides, the notification banner hides quite little of content away since half of it covers the top status bar. So I believe the Apple guys have made a best possible decision here about the banner behavior.

Hate to say this, but didn't Apple implement exactly what was asked? As a former webOS user? Rescaling the screen to accommodate the notification bar temporarily is not the way to go. The page doesn't always repaint correctly, and does nothing to solved the stated problem of tapping something erroneously.

If you tend to dismiss most of the banners why did you activate them in the first place? Turn them off if you don't like them!

Hopefully they let us set the timeout on the banner! 5 seconds is too long when you're just about to press send or cancel on an email and the banner alert appears! 1-2secs is good for me....
Nicely done, Rene. There are times when I do not wish to look at the notification immediately and keep doing what I was already doing. This is a nice way to quickly dismiss the notification.

From the timer on the video, it took you from 0:17 seconds to 0:22 seconds to accidentally tap on the notification bar to go "All the way back" to where you were when the notification came in. That calculates to 5 seconds total. If your life is that hectic that 5 seconds sends you over the edge, maybe some Xanax will help.

And this has what to do with iPhone notifications?
My old enV Touch would ignore any screen press on a button during the first half-second it would appear on the screen. That was very handy so I don't accidentally click on something that popped up over what I was actually trying to click on. I wish the iPhone did that. That would prevent these accidental clicks!
Then the problem becomes that it is unresponsive to intentional presses, which can be equally frustrating. (yes, I can and often do press the notification within half a second)
I've basically turned off all notifications. The only thing I'm using is the lockscreen notifications, otherwise, banners and alerts are disabled.
Notifications, imo, are one of the most over-rated features on the phone.
