Game developers testing Apple A5-chip equipped iPhone 4?

9to5Mac has heard that Apple is allowing select, high level gaming companies to get a head start developing for the next-generation iPhone 5 via a special A5-chipset powered iPhone 4.

The person who chose to share this information with us calls it the ‘iPhone 4S’, though the device itself only has typical Apple prototype nomenclature. He also shared that the device spends its evenings in a safe in the company’s offices.

iPhone 5 release pool: Avian says 2011, early 2012?

There's no way we're going to report every "analyst" rumor that comes our way about the iPhone 5 release date -- because holding an iPhone 5 release pool, and holding the analysts' feet to fire, is so much more fun. So, first up, Avian Securities as relayed by Business Insider:

Supporting out comments over the last month, conversations with yet another key component supplier indicates that production for iPhone-5 will begin in September. [...] This leads us to believe that any launch is likely a very late 2011 or more likely a 2012 event.

What does Apple have to do to re-revolutionize the iPhone?

Lessien, writing on DiogeneX, asks what Apple has to do, not to catch up with things like notifications or cloud services, not to keep up with things like apps and specs, but to truly leap ahead of the competition like.

Apple is as vulnerable as any other company to believing the future is a straight line extrapolation of the present. But eventually the knock-offs will be good enough to fool most people. Solely focusing on incremental improvement is like polishing diamonds. And perfect is the enemy of the good.

I won't spoil her two answers except to say they're good.

Purported iPhone 5 pics show bigger screen, tweaked antenna band

While iPhone 5 might only debut this fall, that apparently won't stop the purported image leaks from Vietnam. If accurate -- and that's always a big if -- the pics show a much smaller bezel which could be indicative of that larger, up to 4-inch display we've heard rumored before. Also, the black breaks are missing from above the volume controls, which either places some doubt on the veracity of the pictures, or indicates Apple may have done some work following iPhone 4 attenuation and de-tuning problems.

A couple more pictures after the break. Check them out and let me know what you think -- real, fake, or really fake?
