How does a certified golf course superintendent use his iPhone to get the job done and what iPhone apps help get him through his day? Here’s greensuper’s answer and as a small token of thanks we’re sending him a $20 iTunes gift certificate. If you want to see your name up on the TiPb home page and get a gift certificate all your own, head on over to the TiPb iPhone Forum and share your story now!

Boy, where do I start. I have been a loyal Apple user since the Apple IIe first came out. When the iPhone first came out, I had just purchased another Blackberry with Verizon, I didn’t want to incur a cancellation fee and the purchase price of the iPhone. 8 months later, when the 1st gen was offered as a refurb, I got my first iphone. I follow Apple/iPhone news as much as I follow the Turfgrass industry. I have always told my wife, if I had the opportunity to do something else, it would be to work for Apple. Now, how do I use my iPhone. To really get the full functionality of the iPhone and some of it’s apps, you really need to subscribe to Apple’s MobileMe service. I will explain why below.

The first app I use religiously is Who is Hot?. It is a great weather app for free. No one in my opinion, beats the animated radar in this app. I haven’t found one that has beat this yet. I am a Regional Agronomist and one thing this app does is gives me the weather for all my contacts. You open the app and click on one of your contacts and you have all the weather and radar right there.

I also use The Weather Channel app. I use the free version, don’t see a big difference in the $4.99 version. I use this app for forecasts and current conditions. This app mirrors the “local on the 8′s” from the Weather Channel. It is a better forecasting tool than Who is hot?

The Turfgrass Management app developed out of the University of Georgia is fantastic!! I have several small travel turfgrass books that allow me to reference diseases, weeds and insects. This app puts all that in the palm of your hand with it’s extensive turfgrass database. It has been communicated that this app will continue to follow with updates as information on any pest becomes available.

We just installed a new RainBird control system at one of my properties. RainBird has recent’y released their MI control system, this program works phenomenal on the iphone. I am able to control the entire system from anywhere. This summer it has proven invaluable with all the late night storms we have had. In concert with Who is Hot, if I see weather is heading to the property late at night, i can use my MI controller on the iPhone and turn off or adjust the irrigation. All this while playing with my kids!!

Toro recently released an official iPhone App, Toro NSN. This is like the MI Controller only this is actually an iPhone App versus a website. This also gives me the ability to control my entire irrigation system from the palm of my hand. I think the neatest part of this is that Toro has developed an iPhone app. If they have done so for irrigation, imagine the possibilities, apps for equipment repair, apps for ordering at your local vendor, it’s endless.

The next program is one that is tied directly to MobileMe without it, you can’t really take full advantage of this program. This app is Quickoffice. Quickoffice allows me to create, edit and email Word and Excel documents. Since you can’t store files on your iPhone like a Blackberry, this app links to your MobileMe idisk as a work around. I have my entire work load on my idisk, everything! I am able to use this program to email anything to my company or Superintendents from the palm of my hand. This program released an update which allows you to email any document you receive directly to your MobileMe idisk, this is a perfect work around to not being able to store documents on your iPhone. When I receive an email with a document I need to edit and respond to, I simple forward the email to a specific address. This sends the attached file to my idisk. I then open my idisk on QuickOffice and there is my document to edit and resend. The whole process over 3G can take 2 minutes, over WiFi much faster.

I also have Documents To Go. Although the UI is much more friendly than Quickoffice, this program falls short in other areas. I am not able to access my work files on my idisk, although DataViz has stated you will be able to do so in the future. You can’t edit Excel files yet, again they (Dataviz) are saying this update will be released soon. If these two updates are released, I will no longer use Quickoffice.

I developed a blog for one of my properties, to communicate information to members. I was finding by the time our weekly news letter was distributed, much of the information I need to pass along would be out of date. The blog has been a huge success at my club. My members love the fact that we use technology like this! The iPhone comes into play because I am able to send an email directly to the blog to make a post. All I do is create an email, the subject line will be the subject of my blog post, create my blog post in the body of the email, hit send and I have just created a new blog post. This has been great for communicating issues like, cart rules and other daily information.

I also use Twitter to communicate with other industry professionals. I do not use this to communicate to any members, it is important to separate the two. I use two apps for Twiiter, Twitter for iPhone and Tweetdeck. They are pretty much the same, except Tweetdeck allows me to create columns for separate categories of people I communicate with. For example, I have a column for PGA Tour tweets, a column for turf professors I follow and a column for other Superintendents. This makes reading tweets easier.

Logmein Ignition was a fantastic app I used prior to Toro releasing their Toro NSN app. Logmein allowed me to login on my iPhone and control the irrigation system. I know a lot of people who use this app to access files on their computer.

Bump is a great app, but in order to be useful you need to be with someone else who has the iPhone and the app. This app allows you to simply bump iPhones together to share pretty much anything you would share on your iphone. I use this with my wife for photos of our kids. Could you imagine walking the Trade Show floor at the GIS with this app. You could arrive at a vendor booth and bump iphones to share contact information. The vendor could use it to send you product information as well. Again, the possibilities are endless.

The camera is another app that is used all the time. I used to carry a camera on my hip, if I needed to take a photo of something I could. I would find myself at times, forgetting my camera at the moment I needed “that” picture. The iphone camera takes care of this. I am also able to send that photo immediately to the GM, members and other workers.

The iPhone for me has become more of a tool than my small multitool. The possibilities are endless as to what Superintendent could use this phone for. I am glad I have a charger of my gator. During those long days, I need that extra boost to get me into the evening. I was actually thinking about starting another blog on exactly this subject. Each day would be a post on how I use my iPhone for my job as a Superintendent and Regional Agronomist.

What about you? Are you a superintendent who uses his iPhone for work? If so, let us know what apps get you through a typical work day!

This week I am looking at QuickOffice HD for iPad. In my ongoing pursuit of productivity apps, I am very pleased with what is coming out of the development community for iPad. Does QuickOffice HD raise the bar again? Let’s dive right in and take a look.

Getting documents into QuickOffice HD is a relative snap. First you have the familiar ability to sync from iTunes. Just add your documents and when you sync, they appear in the app. However, the more useful feature is the ability to sync to the cloud. QuickOffice supports the basic usual suspects: MobileMe iDisk- both public and private, Google Docs, Dropbox and Box.net. You enter in your login credentials and QuickOffice will sync the folders to your iPad, but not the content. The folder content will give a preview but only load when you access the document. Once accessed, it stored locally. You can also open and save documents from email and that is always a bonus.

Folder navigation is very similar to the Macintosh Finder column view. It is my preferred view on the Mac, so I was very pleased with this and it was instantly familiar to me. You can create new folders with a simple tap of the plus icon and deleting and email documents is a breeze, just tap and hold the document and drag and drop it on the respective email and delete icons on the bottom of the screen.

To open a document you can tap on the name or rename it by tapping the blue arrow indicative in iOS for more information. Navigation within documents is easy and innovative. For example in a document you can pinch out to zoom and you are presented with all of the pages. You can then quickly flick to the end of your document. However, a great alternative is to tap and old on the right side of the screen. You can then slide your finger down and are presented a preview of each page in the document via the Mac OS X dock- style preview with magnification; very, very nice. For the spreadsheet application, pinching also zooms and you are given very convenient selection handles for selecting cells. I prefer the feature over what some competitors offer. There is also nice built-in safety feature; the app auto saves your work every minute. So if you forget to save and close the app, your are safe.

Creating documents and spreadsheets is easy and fun. All of the basic formatting options are available. Bold, colors, fonts, underline, alignment, formats, etc. For any sort of lite editing, this application will fit your needs. However there is one glaring omission: a presentation document. That’s right, QuickOffice HD does not support PowerPoint or any other presentation application document format. This is such a shame as it is very close to being my favorite document creation and editing tool on the iPad. However, not having this support is a a serious hit for me in productivity and the competition has a leg up here. However, Quick Office does so many things right, I find myself going back and forth between iWork for iPad, Documents to Go for iPad and QuickOffice HD depending on what I have to do. Competition is good and all of these apps does something better then the other.

[$9.99- iTunes Link]

Pros

Takes advantage of iPad’s screen real estate

Innovative scrolling methods

Easy interface to understand and use

Opens many other documents, but in view-only

Cons

Missing PowerPoint functionality

Not a lot of advanced features

Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even

Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game.

So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break!

Chris’ Pick: GPA+

While still lacking some features (as of our review) this app offers a wide variety of options and settings for tracking courses, assignments, and GPA over the school year. You can add courses and individual assignments, you can track your semester or cumulative GPA, and it provides tools to determine how well you need to do to improve or maintain your GPA. While a little buggy at times, and limited in some cases to the type of data you can enter, it provides an all-in-one solution for any student who wants to track their semester in one iPhone application. Some of our concerns in the review were addressed with various updates that have been provided. [$1.99 - iTunes link]

EleMints – A full featured periodic table of elements, with enough data and versatility for most students. A little more expensive, but the features should wow any potential chemistry student (plus with the updates I have read about, it should address some of the issues I had in the review). [$4.99 - iTunes link]

Wikipanion – While Wikipedia should never, NEVER be used as a reference in a paper, it can be used to get some general information about a topic. Wikipanion is a great iPhone app that interfaces with Wikipedia. Students can use it as a source of general information to look up a variety of topics for just about any class they may take. [Free - iTunes link]

James’ Pick: Appigo’s Todo

Back in May, I selected Appigo’s Todo as my pick of the week. While I use it more as a business app, this does not exclude its ability to be a robust app for students as well (students have things to do as well, no?). Todo offers students the ability to create projects with different sub-tasks and prioritize them accordingly. Don’t take my word for it…TiPB’s Matt Sawyers (aka msbaylor on the forums) reviewed Todo in his Round Robin. [$9.99 - iTunes link]

Justin’s Pick: Cocktails+

I guess I’ve been out of school too long and haven’t used any apps I think are “Back to Schoolish”. Unless it’s back to party school college! then I guess I would say Cocktails+ [$2.99 - iTunes link] and a very good free one called 5800+ Drink & Cocktail Recipes Free [Free - iTunes link]

Leanna’s Pick: ACT MATH Foundation

f you’re in high school and thinking about college, then the ACT exam is likely in your future. Since studying is high on your priority list, you could go to your local bookstore and purchase a heavy review book, or pick up ACT MATH Foundation from the App Store. This app reviews 361 topics that are covered by the ACT Math exam and has practice tests with instant detailed score results. Indriam Inc. also offers similar apps for the GED, GRE, SAT, and GMAT. Studying has never been so fun! [$1.99 on sale - iTunes link]

Matt’s Pick: iHomework

After coming from a palm pilot, I used DueYesterday and missed it very much. Having said that, there are several options out there, but iHomework seems to be the best assignment & grade tracker (and the closest to what I used to use). The application can easily track multiple classes and multiple assignments in each class. One of the really neat things about the app is its grade tracking. It has the ability to do simple grade tracking and more advanced tracking (weighted assignments). With these two types of systems, this makes it a perfect solution for both high school and college students. [$0.99 - iTunes link]

GRE Connect – Recently I have been preparing for the GRE and I scouted out a number of different apps. So far GRE Connect seems to be the best. It not only has a wealth of information – explanations, questions & answers, but it also has some very nifty progress tracking, diagnostic test and quizzes to prepare you for the GRE. Further more if you buy their Desktop application, you can sync with it and keep everything up to date. This, however, will set you back an additional $20, but you are still able to backup for free. [$9.99 - iTunes Link]

iStudiez Pro – iStudiez Pro has the best graphical interface for tracking assignments, but lacks any type of grade tracking. If all you want to do it track assignments, then this has a very nice calendar-view feature. [$1.99 - iTunes Link]

Rene’s Pick: QuickOffice

Though higher education and I agreed to cease hostilities and go our separate ways many moons ago, based on my dim and distant memories there was some need to write and perhaps calculate… stuff. Kidding aside, if you need any type of document editing capability, QuickOffice will help you get your learn on. [$12.99 on sale - iTunes link]

reQall – reQall for iPhone is a client for reQall’s web service (free or pro for $30 a year). David Pogue shows it off with typical… Poguiness on YouTube but the quick version is reQuall lets you capture and organize ideas and tasks in a variety of easy and efficient ways. [Free - iTunes link]

Confession: I bought my first PDA so I could work on some book projects while mobile. Several Palm PDAs, Treos, and Windows Mobiles later, and I was still looking for that holy grail: seamless back-and-forth compatibility between my desktop tools and my handset. Of course, the iPhone didn’t have any document editing features when it was launched, but flashforward to today, and Quickoffice is the first to fill that huge functionality gap. Quickoffice Mobile Suite ($19.99 – iTunes link) sets the bar:

Quickoffice’s integrated application is the essential high-performance mobile office productivity tool for anyone on the go. Experience enterprise-grade Microsoft® Word and Excel® Office functionality with leading-edge innovation and unparalleled ease-of-use. Edit important files with confidence; Quickoffice maintains 100% data integrity and guarantees Microsoft compatibility.

Is this my holy grail? Let’s find out: courtesy of Quickoffice, we’re giving away two (2) copies of the full Mobile Suite to two lucky forum members and all you have to do to win is help me finish my latest story:

It was a dark and stormy night, and the full moon lent an anxious glow to San Francisco’s Moscone Center, still but for long, wind-snapped banners that read: Welcome to Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2009.

Rene sat, finger poised above the mouse button, ready to click into being the last rumor round up, the TiPb Prediction post. He smiled, his finger coiled, tensed, and–

“Hold the presses!” Dieter roared as he burst through the doors of TiPb HQ, iPhone clenched and shaking in his hands.

“Presses?” Rene said. “Really? We have this thing now called the inter–”

“Quite youse!” Dieter shoved his iPhone at Rene. “And read.”

Rene bent forward, took it. “What am I reading?”

“Just the scoop of the century.” A smile raced up Dieter’s face. “Secret source. Top secret. Roof of the world secret. Would you believe that tomorrow, during the WWDC, Apple is going to…”

What?! Don’t leave us hanging like that! What is Apple going to announce?

Turns out YOU have to finish the story, the conversation. That’s right. Don’t just tell us, show us: we want action, dialog, drama, suspense, comedy. What’s Dieter going to say, and how is Rene going to take it? How’s the internet going to take it?!

Get your creative juices flowing and two story-tellers will get each get a copy of Quickoffice Mobile Suite absolutely free.

One entry per person

Must have access to US App Store account to redeem promo codes

Inappropriate or off-topic material will be removed at the sole discretion of the moderators.

Now hurry up, get over to the TiPb Birthday Bash: Quickoffice Mobile Suite Give Away forum thread and get writing! I want to know how it ends!

After a couple hours of usage, I have to say Quicksheet is quite good while Quickword needs a couple of immediate updates.

Dieter’s on the floor at CTIA, and we’re hoping he’ll bring back a closer look, but in the meantime the fine folks at QuickOffice have just let us know that their new iPhone app, QuickOffice for iPhone will be available in the next few weeks, and will cost $19.99.

Quickoffice for iPhone has an intuitive user interface and supports comprehensive functionality including cut, copy and paste, font formatting, content selection and bullets within Word documents. Users can also leverage a wider keyboard to edit and create documents in landscape mode. Excel functionality includes extensive mathematical and statistical formulas.

Other useful features include file sharing capabilities via Wi-Fi desktop connectivity and access to one’s MobileMe iDisk account. Editing is done with maintaining perfect data integrity, in addition to ‘auto-save’ to ensure none of your work is lost on-the-go.

We’re guessing “next few weeks” means they’ll be using a custom-made cut/copy paste implementation under iPhone 2.x, which means we’re also guess there’ll be a new version come iPhone 3.0 launch this “summer”.

There have been other apps offering Excel editing in the paste, but Word editing is new for the iPhone (unless DocsToGo gets there first). Is it enough to get you over your document hurdle, or are there any power users still hungering for more?
