Epic, makers of a little game called Gears of War 2, have shown off their Unreal Engine 3… on an iPhone (and iPod touch!). No games announced using it yet, but if there is any Power of Awesome in this ‘verse, there will be and soon! Apparently, Epic will also be bringing the Unreal Engine 3 to other platforms in the new year as well, starting off with another platform announcement at CES in January.

2010 should be an interesting year for mobile gaming!

Developers: Is iTunes Connect Down for You?
  1. mike says:

Nice accomplishment, but still doesn’t change the fact the iphone is horrendous for these type of games. Turning is tedious, your fingers cover up too much of the screen trying to use the buttons and no physical feedback for those buttons will keep the iphone from ever becoming a hardcore portable game machine. it may be great for the basic tap oriented or tower based games but more advanced games just don’t feel right on this platform.

  2. Nellybelly333 says:

@mike I must agree. Don’t see how the lack of physical buttons will ever remedy this either…

  3. Rwd hero says:

Why can’t I watch the video on my iPhone?

  4. antonio says:

Mike, COD Zombies, Eliminate, Modern Combat, Doom and specially NOVA say youre completely WRONG. FPS games control better on the iPhone than on PSP and DS, that have physical controls. You have a case of pure lack of skill there, sorry.

  5. iJarrett says:

While I agree to some degree that games on this platform can be ackward, never is a really strong word. The control could be much better, even without tactile feedback. Developers are just very lax on coding smooth controls. Cheap games sell as much as expensive ones on this kind of platform, no reason to go all out.

  7. Bear says:

I deleted Eliminate Pro because the controls were so terrible I wasn’t having any fun. Never tried an fps on a traditional handheld gaming system so i can’t speak to that. I think I’ll leave my fps games to consoles (which I prefer over pc actually).

  8. SheiknetChris says:

Bear: I find Eliminate’s control’s unsatisfactory. However I do find Sandstorm and N.O.V.A.’s controls quite enjoyable. Doom classic also good. I do wish there were external controller options–it is up to Apple to allow that as an API.

  9. George DW says:

What I’d like to see as far as external controls is a case with a couple trigger buttons on the side, and maybe a d-pad or mini analog stick next to the home button. If Apple would allow it…

  10. Maticek says:

I just wish developers put bluetooth PS3/Wii controller compatibility into all those sofisticated games.

For real gamers, gaming on the iPhone is a PIA.

  11. Rob says:

having a real controller to carry around is stupid. the point of these fps’ on the iphone is so you have something fun to do while your out. no one wants to carry around a seperate controller just in case you have some free time to play, and if your at home, play your console. oh and i do agree that the touch screen is way better than the controls on the psp.

  12. senaiboy says:

Yes, touchscreen is not perfect for FPS, I find my fingers blocking the screen and frantically swiping on it because it’s not turning fast enough. But I must agree the controls on PSP are far worse.

Apple or Sony has to come up with something better next (2 nubs? more sensitive, bigger touchscreen?) if either wants to take the lead in handheld FPS gaming.

  13. Hi there peeps, I just wanted to holla and tell you that I found a great site. For those of you who don’t want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on pay-per-view fees to watch UFC 108 online FREE in full HD. Far Better then spending $55.95 on it eh?
