Reminder: We won’t see all iPhone OS 4 features until WWDC in June

While Apple announced 7 tent-pole features for iPhone OS 4 (iPhone 4.0) including multitasking, folders, mail enhancements, iBooks, Enterprise features, Game Center social network, and iAd mobile advertising platform, it’s important to remember we won’t get the final feature set for iPhone 4.0 until Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) this June.

Last year Apple showed off a lot of features for iPhone 3.0 in March, but it wasn’t until WWDC that we saw features specific to the new iPhone 3GS hardware — video recording, VoiceOver, compass, Voice Memo app, etc.

If iPhone G4 (not 4G!), also likely introduced at WWDC in June, has extra hardware like a front-facing camera, we won’t see Mobile iChat video announced until then…

iPhone 4.0 beta now available to developers: brings 1500 new APIs
  1. icebike says:

And without knowledge of any new hardware, most of this stuff is really a huge Yawn. Nothing but stuff long overdue, and already available in other platforms or jailbroken iPhones.

We have to wait for the new hardware to see if there is anything here of real value.

The question is, will this kill sales of 3GS iPhones? With this not coming out till June-ish, and no new hardware till September-ish, will these meager announcements do anything to prop up sales?

Or will people simply buy the iPad and opt for Android in the mean time? Apple laughs all the way to the bank in either case.

  2. CupertinoSweat says:

@icebike who said anything about the new hardware coming in september? that makes no sense

  3. Gino from the Bronx says:

Makes me feel good about my jail broken 3.0 3GS which I’m no hurry to update considering what I can do now still exceeds what was announced in.4.0

  4. CupertinoSweat says:

apple addressed all their short comings and neither palm nor android have anything over iphone os.

everything else that they add is just gravy

  5. fastlane says:

    Doesn’t matter about WWDC.

    4.0 = Nerd Update

Regardless of how great the new hardware is, or what exclusive updates are being kept secret for it, they completely missed the boat on many basic features still missing…

    • One-swipe access for Settings (SBSettings) doesn’t require new hardware.
    • Option to silence other apps with ringer switch (iPod, YouTube, and whatever else) in Settings doesn’t require new hardware.
    • Native Apple ToDo app to sync with iCal and MobileMe doesn’t require new hardware.
    • Separate signatures for each Mail account doesn’t require new hardware.
    • A few basic improvements to Notes doesn’t require new hardware.
    • Scrollbar for looong web pages doesn’t require new hardware.
    • Locking accelerometer (Rotation Inhibitor) doesn’t require new hardware

I could go on, and on, and on…. but why bother? I believe I’ve made my point.

  6. Muero says:

    @icebike

It’s the same thing as before, with the iPhone 3G still on sale after iPhone 3.0 was announced, and Original iPhone after 2.0 announcement.

Also, no new hardware until September? iPhone hardware and OS have always shipped at same time. OS will be here in summer, probably July, and new hardware will arrive at the same time.

  7. icebike says:

    @Cupertino:

September is just my rough guess about when a new phone might actually hit the streets.

And until you can manage your phone without using a music player the shortcomings are far from being addressed.

If I sold you a Car that required you to use your Kitchen mixer to change a to fill the gas tank would you be happy with that?

  8. john says:

so ipad is release, finallYyyyy:) I have a dev account, any one wants to test? mail me at ideveloper9611@gmail.com

  9. Stefan says:

What a snooze fest. I mean seriously my jail broken iPhone can do almost all of the new features and then some.

Don’t even get me started about no new notification system though…damn pop ups.

  10. Somewhere I read that developers get it today? Is it a preview version or?

I would say it may be worth the 99 bucks to be on the edge of the releases etc.

  11. francolaslasa says:

personally I am happy with this update. originally when I jailbroke my iphone 3Gs I did it for backgrounder with proswitcher and my 3g.Got tired of the tethered jailbreak and that was the end of that but having come from the multitasking world of the blackberry I really missed those features, now with them being included in 4.0 along with folders and unified email inbox … Way to go apple !! I agree with what the above person said about sbs setting though , it’s pain to turn on bluetooth , oh well 5.0 I guess :)

  12. icebike says:

    @Fastlane

    Plus 1.

Too much abandonware. Too few new capabilities.

Video on 3G was the same thing. Apple announced abandonment of the 3G (allegedly for performance reasons), and the next month QiK Video app proves them wrong.

  13. Justin says:

AVRCP??!?? WTF already?!?!!!?? How hard is it to get THAT working?? And when it comes, is it going to be better than everybody else’s?

  14. fastlane says:

I remember during the 3.0 preview reading things like “Major applause!”, “Crowd goes wild!”

Not this time…. although I did read “crickets” mentioned once.

  15. flora says:

What if they don’t put out a new phone this year? Sounds dumb, I know. It seems no one asked them about the new phone, either.

  16. Trash Can Man says:

Call me a simpleton…but I was looking forward to more customization…ability to use custom tones for SMS,MMS,voicemail notification…you know…stuff that has been availible on other phones for 5+ years now. And it also seems like with multitasking only to work on the 3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch, that’s going to leave a lot of people in the dark, especially if new hardware is not to be introduced. I got the 3G last summer to replace my 1st gen iPhone…I didn’t necessarily want a compass or video recording. Now I feel like I have a outdated piece of technology, but hey that’s technological progress, I guess.

  17. Vic says:

here is a link to get the 4.0 beta. http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/2202143/2325666/ but i have 1 question. if i was on a 3.0 beta dev team am i still able to activate the 4.0 firmware on my phone?

  18. Steve Woz says:

    Apologize for apple much?

  19. Noodles says:

There will be a 4G iphone, it is going to Sprint in September. The other carriers are getting the iphone HD.

  20. iPhoneMIlk says:

A social gaming network is HUGE, anyone who thinks this is NOT revolutionary is clearly not thinking right. – Now apple is right in line to compete with Microsoft.

this is HUGE news, i would have taken this update by itself!

  21. Andrea Cristiano says:

Noodles unless you have proof font spout crap out of your anus

  22. MintOreo says:

I’m sorry, but is this supposed to be an excuse for a rather lackluster show on Apple’s part, Rene?

  23. Andrea Cristiano says:

Guys it was only a preview all the details will be out at wwdc what the hell did u expect. The only reason this preview even happened is so developers could get the sdk and no leaks would drip out pre wwdc

  24. Alex says:

I love how everyone’s always underwhelmed with Apple’s presentations yet they stay with Apple… Yes some of the new stuff in 4.0 is already on other phones (and has been for a while) but if other phones were so much better, why has Apple outsold almost all of them… While Android is really good for geeky people who care about power using (as long as you aren’t using a Backflip or Eris) Apple has created a easy to use OS for everyday people. IMO, I think that Apple has done well with everything they’ve released later on i.e. video recording, copy and paste and so on. All in all, Apple has put on another crowd teaser for WWDC. Let the iPhone G4 rumors continue for the next two months.

  25. Trash Can Man says:

I guess multitasking only going to the 3GS & 3rd gen iPod touch kind of burst the bubble and then some. It would have been nice to listen to a radio station on one app and being able to surf the web or type an e-mail. I have to wait and I am going to wait till next year to see what iPhone generation 5 brings before I pay for another iPhone. I thought it was interesting that Steve Jobs more or less said that the 3GS is the dominant iPhone in regards to users; I don’t know about that.

  26. Andrea Cristiano says:

Trash can sorry to burst your bubble but the 3G was not widely adapted alot waited for 3GS and many swapped up so 3G is not a big enough presence. Besides if you own a 3G your update should be up so a Version 4 iPhone should be attainable. So even less 3G will be left.

  27. Trash Can Man says:

I seem to remember tons & tons of people lining up for the 3G iPhone when it came in ’08 and very few crowding brick & mortar stores when the 3GS debuted last year. The only way to know if the numbers were released in relation to 3G users vs. 3GS users. I really enjoyed my first gen iPhone and the only reason I upgraded was that the sound quality while on a call was far superior on a 3G vs. a 2G. I upgraded last year Andrea, so I have to wait if I want to pay a subsidized price for a new iPhone. At this point, they really have to knock it out of the park with new hardware and knowing Apple, they probably will.

  28. Andrea Cristiano says:

Well yea definitely apple is going to bring it I mean I updated to the 3GS last year and of the v4 doesn’t wowo me I will just buy an iPad and keep my 3GS. Although I fear apple will wow us with V4 and I will be forced to lol buy a V4 lol

  29. lonbeehold says:

@Justin, ITA agree with you about the AVRCP. I was really hoping that 4.0 would finally give full support. I am happy about the other features, esp, multitasking and and folders for apps, but feel this was a big one that’s being left out. Unless they announce it later. Does anyone know if the unified inbox will be a choice? I LIKE my inboxes separate.

  30. Roger says:

    Bluetooth to other phones! Please!

  31. Noodles says:

    @Andrea Cristiano

In due time you will see, no need to prove anything to YOU, or anyone for that matter. The iphone with the front facing camera will not be on Verizon, At&t or Tmo. ;)

  32. DC says:

iphone OS 4.0 review hands on multitasking sneak peek video!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4maAqW3BAwk

  33. Desmond says:

I’m glad they posted this because it really bothers me that people just don’t comprehend sometimes. They clearly kept stating that there were 100 new features and in this Sneak Preview we are just showing you 7 of them. If the 7 basically brings the device up to par there will still be 93 more features if we take it literally. People just want to complain and be so negative. The same people that say this is going to be a weak update or it’s not enough will be the same people on line at the store, or online, and breaking their contracts to get the next phone. By all means just get a different phone all together if that’s not enough. I admit that I was teetering on the fence. All of the trolling that we have here is retarded because the one thing that Apple will have over every other company is iTunes. Hate it or love most people use just one source to get all of their media and music. Just as long as 3GS gets to use every feature except iChat Video I’m good because I’m not breaking my contact I can wait until September.

  34. John says:

Is the iPhone 4os an update to the 3gs or a completly different iPhone

  35. ohhnice submit but truly?/? :P
