iMovie for iPhone 4

iMovie, Apple's first exclusive iPhone 4 app, is no available for purchase from the iTunes App Store for $4.99. (At least the US App Store, we can't find it in all of them yet -- let us know if it's in yours).

The demos have all looked beyond slick, finger-painting with clips and transitions, themes and titles. Will it hold up to actual field use, beyond magic moments, cute kids, and pet tricks? Try it out and let us know what you think (especially the video editors out there -- we want your expert opinions).

Full Apple description after the break.

Make beautiful HD movies anywhere with iMovie, the fun, feature-rich video editing app for iPhone 4. Create a video postcard of your day at the beach and publish it to the web — without ever leaving your spot in the sand. Or make a movie of your child’s birthday party and send it to your parents — while the party is in full swing. With iMovie for iPhone, you can start several projects and finish them whenever you want and wherever you are.

Made for Multi-Touch.

  • Tap to add or record video right into your project.
  • Drag to trim the lengths of video clips and photos.
  • Pinch to zoom the timeline and get a closer look.
  • Slide to scrub through the video in your project.

Give it a theme.

  • Choose from a selection of themes including Modern, Bright, Travel, Playful, and News.
  • Each theme includes a matching set of titles and transitions – plus its own soundtrack.
  • Instantly change themes or swap themed elements in your project.
  • Titles and graphics automatically update with location data from your video.

Add music and photos.

  • Select from included music that matches each iMovie theme, or select from your own song library.
  • Enable ducking to automatically lower the volume of background music and highlight audio from video clips.
  • Add photos from your own library, or take a picture and drop it into your project.
  • Customize each photo with a unique “Ken Burns” panning effect.

Share your movie.

  • Export your movie in one of three sizes: Medium, Large, or HD.
  • Share your movie on the web in a MobileMe gallery or on YouTube.
  • Send your movie to friends and family in an email or via an MMS message.
  • Easily sync your movie back to your computer.

  4. Macboy15 says:

Grrr why can I not find it in the app store?

  5. Macboy15 says:

O nm found it on my iMac tried on the phone first. Also to add I'm sure sure if I'm alone here but did anybody notice better 3G reception with the new phone. Because I always got 4-5 outside with my 3GS outside and getting the same with iPhone 4 but my 3GS got maybe 2-3 bars in my house. Now I'm getting a steady 5 with the new phone. Weird.

  6. Sidberto says:

I can't find it on the mobile app store either. Oh well, I'll just wait to DL it on my computer.

  7. Lpomo says:

    Not there yet

  8. DJ Provoke says:

MAN!! Why won't they let the 3GS use it???????

  9. Harry says:

Not available in NZ store. Not available in japan store. Damn

  10. Jax says:

I think it's BS that 3GS users can't use that app. They would be making more money.

  11. Greg says:

Does anyone know if you will be able to view these on apple tv?

  12. Buffdaddydeluxe says:

Am I the only person that iOS 4 when it comes to multitasking that their 3GS isn’t remembering saved states?! WTF?! This is happening for all my 3rd party apps including the ones 4.0 tested.

  13. Chobbs11 says:

The apps have to be updated to ios 4 for saved states to work. It is on the developer now

On topic. I just downloaded the iMovie app on the iPhone. It is definitely there. Use the link in the above story to find it. I couldn't find it when I did a search. But the link brought it up????!!

  14. mr79 says:

    swing!

  15. Rene Ritchie says:

iPhone 3GS doesn't have enough RAM or Apple A4 chipset to handle the video editing.

  16. Mapleleaf14 says:

Didn't show up when I did a search for iMovie or Apple, but when I went to Photography under Categories it was the very first app.

Bought but haven't done anything with it yet.

  17. Ren says:

Have iPhone 4 just looked in app store no iMovie

  18. ShermR25 says:

can't find it either on my 4

  19. Mitchell says:

ONLY FOR IPHONE 4? APPLE YOU SICK SCUM

  20. Pinny says:

I tried making a quick home video. I'm usually really bad at this stuff, but I found it surprisingly easy. That said, all it does is let you string videos and pictures together with transitions and background music.

What I'm not thrilled about is the 720p recording. Apparently you need really good lighting to get the high res, high quality videos. Either you need daylight, or the flash (which will force you to have to manually refocus the camera).

  21. Lee Miran says:

For all the non iPhone 4 users, get Reel Director as an alternative. It is a very capable app, and they dropped the price from $7.99 down to $3.99 (probably to compete with iMovie).

  22. India says:

I also did a search and couldn't find it in the app store. I did what mapleleaf said to do. I went to categories, the photography and bam it was the first app! I love using iMovie on my Mac and I can't wait to use it on the phone!!

  23. Tyler crawford says:

Will this work on 3GS if I download it?

  24. Jejoro says:

Not in Canada yet?!? Why can't 3gs use it that blows?!?

  25. Max Miller says:

this app is so awesome!! Last night to test it out I made a music video for one of my original songs. Shot, edited, and uploaded to youtube in just 2 and a half hours! Check it out to see an example of what this app can do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T56eVDaciQ

I'm seriously so excited about this app. If that's what I could do after having it for just a few hours I can't imagine what I'll be able to do with more time, and actually leaving my room :D

  26. Mike says:

It won't work with the iPad either! DUMB! The iPad has everything the iPhone 4 has. Come on Apple!

  27. Liz76 says:
