TiPb unboxes iPhone 4, gets some FaceTime

iPhone 4 FaceTime

We had to unbox the iPhone 4 for you all even though it's moved beyond "exciting tech blog event" to "necessary ritual." We left the burning incense out, though, and replaced it with some quick comparisons to the EVO 4G and the Nexus One. Toss in a quick FaceTime video chat and feature discussion and a quick look at the Bumper accessory and you're looking at an unboxing extravaganza.

We'll be bringing you more iPhone 4 impressions, pictures, videos, and thoughts from the entire TiPb team for the rest of the day, week, and - heck - year. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, video after the break!

    Great video! Thanks!

  2. Macboy15 says:

This signal dropping issue is not a iPhone 4 problem. If you have a 3GS and hold it the same way as people are holding the iPhone 4 you will see the signal drop to no bars. And when you put it down on a table without touching it all the bars come back. If you don't believe me try it yourself. So all this bad press for nothing. Covering the back or this or any phone will do this. So who ever discovered this is dumb.

  3. DT says:

Take some comparison photo shots between the i4 and the Evo4g! Would love to see that...

  4. Alf says:

Just tried it. Doesn't do it.

  5. Eric says:

The bumper looks better then I was expecting. Have to see it in person next. Also what colors will they release for it?

  6. green says:

    thanks for sharing!

facetime could be really good when driving and you have your phone holstered onto the dashboard facing you, and you can have conversation...........or bad if you actually look at the iphone instead of road.

  7. USMC says:

    Thanks Dieter.

  8. Eagleyesmith says:

I didn't watch the whole video. Just the FaceTime and the one thing that I wanted to see. The Bumper!! Yes! Looks amazing. White iPhone 4 + iPhone 4 Bumper Black + ZaggFull-BodyShield = Perfect Protection (for me)

    Great Video.

  9. Alex says:

    @Eric

The bumper comes in black, white, orange, blue green and pink. Currently (at least at the Apple store I was at) they only had black, so I got one. It's better than I thought it'd be!

  10. Public Farley says:

Nice video Dieter. The iPhone 4 looks choice! Can't wait to get my hands on that baby. Bumper also looks nicer than i thought.

Might be a bit fan-boyish of me. But it looks like a much more polished piece of kit then the EVO & Nexus 1 in the video.

Finally, FaceTime looks to have very nice performance over a good connection.

  11. zeagus says:

I need someone to FaceTime with, dagnabbit!

  12. Redshirt says:

Bumper was only in black at the Apple store I was at as well. Something I also noticed, the bumper is a bit rounded. So you can't prop the phone up on its edge, it won't stay up.

  13. iPheuria says:

OH my god I want that phone so bad now :0( The EVO is UGGGGLY damn it is one big ugly phone I wouldn't buy that with my pocket lint. I though the bumper was tacky but I have to say seeing it in real life I want one now :D

  14. Noodles says:

Here is another issue involving the bumper sleeve and Wifi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jSKHVHDJrg

  15. Tom from Myspace says:

Dieter, I never know when you'll pop up at precentral, or TIPB... Are you employed at both?

  16. leonardo says:

Well I have to say I'm really disappointed with the new design overall. I really wanted to get did of my blackberry 9700 but not for that ugly uninsired thing.

  17. Noodles says:

@Macboy15, don't be naive, if the signal drop issue is not an ipone 4 problem, where does the blame go?? The fact is, the iphone 4 has a major problem, which is a hardware design flaw. A Danish Professor who is an expert on antenna's, predicted the iphone 4 would have this issue. Watch one of the growing number of videos showing this major issue.

  18. Rene Ritchie says:

Dieter is editor-in-chief. He's on all the SPE sites. :)

  19. deviladv says:

@Noodles: citation please, or at least the name of the danish professor.

  20. Dionte says:

The one downside of the front facing camera is that people will start to expect to see me back on knocking.

  21. Mark b says:

Have a 3GS for now held it like the I4 and lose reception so looks to be and all around issue and I put it on my desk and all bars come back

  22. Noodles says:

    @deviladv, here you go: http://tinyurl.com/37z3ylv

  23. 3gs user says:

    Doesn't happen w/ my 3gs at all...

  24. Dan says:

Bumper on, 2 rooms from router. Full reception. That guy made video for hits. If you have problems, post here.

  25. iquinn says:

Dieter was that an Olympus E-PL1 you were holding in the pics? Only ask because I am thinking about getting one and if it is good enough for you it is good enough for me.

  26. tweger01 says:

My biggest gripe with the bumper is it's so rubbery that it makes it a little difficult to get the phone out of your jeans pocket. I wish they would of make it a little more slick or plasticy

  27. Tom says:

It's good. I have mine up and running. Best Buy called and said. Come pick it up. In and out in 10 minutes. Set up in 45.

  28. BrianAnus says:

My iphone got a yellow stain on the screen.

  29. Jeff says:

I have no reception problems with my iPhone 4. I'm using the iFrogz case. The reception actually seems about the same or even better. I think people writing negative reviews are just jealous and bias.

  30. Noodles says:

Here is where Jobs experienced the connection issue at the keynote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_jbzD3caZc Notice how Jobs try to blame it on other peoples Wifi connections.

  31. Noodles says:

@Jeff, this is Apples discussion forum, are all these folks just being negative for the sake of it: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475309&start=0&tstart=0

  32. parker says:

Has any thought about how parents could use this feature? if it was over 3G, you could call your kids and see what they are doing. At a friends house or at a party? haha if my parents did this i would be F*****D

  33. Tim says:

I don't have this issue, but I don't see what the big deal is. Just don't cover that spot when you are using the phone. Are people holding the phones with a vice grip when talking?

  34. Noodles says:

@Tim, do you read your comments before you post them? Having to use a phone a certain way for it to work, is unacceptable. There are now more folks complaining that while touching the Wifi antenna when on Wifi, there is a connection issue as well.

  35. Fraydog says:

I was able to replicate the reception issue with my 3GS. I am betting this is a software issue.

  36. SockRolid says:

    Cool watch, Bro!

  37. SockRolid says:

Just thought of a great reason why FaceTime is wi-fi only for now.

Audio call = distracted driving even if hands-free with earpiece. FaceTime call = extra super distracted driving.

  38. Tim says:

@noodle, do you realize what a damn whiny baby you sound like?

  39. Ryan Sheffield says:

Now, I do not have an iPhone 4... yet, but to all those morons saying that steve jobs had the issue while presenting the device, after everybody turned off their devices, did Jobs not successfully facetime at the end of the presentation?
