Apple iPhone 4 press conference predictions

Apple's unprecedented iPhone 4 press conference is only a few hours away and so many questions remain unanswered. Will Steve Jobs even be there? Does he need to personally get in front of this or does he need to stay far away and let Phil Schiller and the engineers handle it?

Will Apple be forced to offer a hardware fix for the antenna problems, either a recall to the genius bar for new insulation inside or outside, or a swap out for an iPhone 4.1 with fix already in place? Can they get away with another software fix promise for the future? WIll they give away free bumpers to soothe the masses, or free swatches of iDuct-tape to further enrage them. Will they deny, deny, deny and cast stabby glances back into the dark heart of the internet and mainstream media? Will they try to shift attention by announcing a Verizon iPhone?

Or was this just an elaborate plot to get all Apple-centric journos at the same location, at the same time, so Apple could hit them with a stern talking to, then immolate them with Omega Beams?

Apple iPhone 4 press conference meta-live blog
  1. Johnmastercokbaiting says:

White iPhone 4. With antenna issues.

  2. Lauren says:

Seeing as today is officially the first day of the second half of July, I call the elusive white iPhone will be announced. Followed by a brief statement about the antenna issue, which I can only assume they are silently fixing. "Manufacturing issues" which lead to the delay on the white iPhone and then the "unprecendented" demand which lead to a backorder of the black iPhones after launch is probably the antenna issue itself. Apple probably did know about the antenna issue but not before they decided to push ahead with the product on its schedule.

  3. Adam says:

Probably explaining the "benefits" of upgrading to iOS 4.1.

    And one more thing…

    White iPhone

  4. Tino72 says:

Well short of a recall I won't be satisfied unless my unit is swapped for one with a coating on it to improve it to at least my 3GS standards. I'm using a bumper and still no a great performer here. Of the press conference doesn't impress then the day after tomorrow I'm going into a Att store and buying a samsung captivate and mailing this horrible idea of a phone back. Great everthing else sorry phone.

  5. BarryP says:

Funny to me that everyone is suddenly a cell phone antenna expert. Wait and see.

  6. Aden Fraser says:

Its quite clear that this press conference is only to inform you that your holding it wrong.

  7. Dub C says:

Maybe its to announce the arrival of the iphone on verizon. V-phone. Wishful thinking perhaps

  8. Leo says:

Going to say, not a problem, but if you think there is a problem, go in and we'll exchange it out and you shouldn't have any problems.

  9. Rob says:

I expect nothing but white iphone and a short explanation about how 4.0.1 will solve the problem. Meanwhile I will keep my 3GS and keep my eye on the samsung captivate. I would hat to give up my iPhone, but the 4 is a def dud.

  10. SG says:

I think they have to be very careful about launching the white iphone with a hardware fix. If the white iphone antenna behaves any diffferent(better)from the current iphone4 there will be a swarm of returns from the 1.6 million currrent owners. That is Unless they wait to launch it past the 30 day return window.

  11. Rob says:

    @ sg

If they do that, then a lawsuit would happen immediately. I don't mean one of these petty suits that we've seen, I mean would with really bad publicity and cost apple a lot of money and reputation.

  12. John Jessla says:

Apple is going to dodge the issue altogether and announce full Flash 10.1 compatibility on the iPhone. Look, a bird!!

  13. Drunk says:

The leaked prototype was the beginning of the end. This is the nail in the coffin, I saw this coming miles and miles away. One screw up after another and people's perception of a product changed radically en masse. I went from having a product people envied to having a brand new kick me sign in my pocket. Can apple bounce back?

  14. Ichorus says:

A funny solution to Iphone 4 signal problems.

    HEHE

    http://twitpic.com/25rzcb

  15. Rob says:

I read over at macrumors that a software fix coul still come. They are saying that all cellphones have software to adjust when a human hand disrupts signal. Apple has always had crappy software for this but it didn't really matter in previous versions. The theory is that if apple fixes the software, the problem will no longer exist and there will be no need for a recal.

I know this is wishful thinking but a guy can dream right?

  16. ghostface147 says:

I think it's going to be a combination of things in the poll. Discounted bumpers, apology, and perhaps a detailed explanation of what the issue is and how he fired his entire RF team.

  17. dstrauss says:

Won't happen, but how's this for razzle dazzle (or "sleight of hand"):

    1. Mea culpa (sorry got through testing without catching this)

    2. Free bumpers or 1 week return/coat/return more permanent fix

    3. One more thing - Verizon iPhone for Christmas

Now what do you think the press and all of (U.S.) humanity would remember from that press conference?

  18. fastlane says:

    @Drunk :

"This is the nail in the coffin, I saw this coming miles and miles away."

Then, you are drunk... and seeing things that simply aren't there.

  19. Dennis says:

Apple never directly addresses or admits to the existence of a technical glitch or defect until they have a solution to offer. They may internally know that they have a problem but if they don't have a solution, they do nothing overt but rather engage in quiet ameliorative gestures, like eliminating the restocking fee for returns, extending the return window, pull the device from the shelves, etc.

The press conference is definitely about the iPhone 4 antenna. If they're having a press conference, they must have a solution to offer to those who have purchased a phone already, and they will explain how this will not be a problem on future iPhones. This is their biggest product release ever, but it is not the first time they have had quality control problems or technical issues with a product. But because this is their biggest product, Apple is kind of forced to deal with it in a press conference.

In similar situations, Apple has always done what is necessary to appease their users in the end. I don't expect any differently in this situation.

  20. Kyle says:

In the honest to god truth, this isn't stopping me or let alone making me think twice about buyin the iPhone 4. Not even a chance of influencing my decisions. I've had an iPhone on preorder at RadioShack for the past two weeks(Large district, low on the todem pole for distribution) so I can get trade in value on my 3G ($100!). I can wait for a the glory, but every time this dammed stutters on iOS 4, I stop and think of how much faster it shall be with the iPhone 4.

  21. tsb3 says:

If iPhone goes to Verizon you won't be able to talk and surf at the same time, and that sucks.

  22. Scout says:

Even after installing 4.0.1 here is now my situation:

    1) signal bars drop now (from 4 to 1) even while using the "grip" using my case. I don't recall ever seeing this before!

    2) signal bars sometime drop (from 4 to 2) by picking it up from my desk and holding the phone in any manner.

In both cases the speed of drop and recovery is higher now!

However I am sure when I am in a really strong 3G area I'll have difficulty reproducing these issues (which is why Apple and others are having difficulty believing this). However for the majority of times I am not in such an area.

I now believe the theory that a certain lot(s) were manufactured with an inherent defect.

I read where some have had replacements from the Apple store that do not have this behavior.

I really hope the Press Conference today will give people like me some hope.

If Apple doesn't come clean and offer to replace my defective iP4 for free and am done with any more Apple products. Period.

I will be off to Droid land.

  23. Margh says:

hi,your blog having superb information. and my blog also ver useful to who are they seeking related iphone, ipods, smartphones.my blog is I have added your link in my site.. kindly add my link and reply as soon as possible.Thanks.

  24. thekevinmonster says:

I vote for a further software update that changes the way the radio reacts to sudden drops in signal strength/changes the way the radio is retuned on the fly, which is more complicated than the one to change the signal display.

I think this is a hardware issue that can be adjusted with a software change. That's completely possible. You can't stop signal attenuation when you obstruct/detune the antenna, but you can change device behavior when that happens. I'm not sure what people's reactions are to that. I don't doubt that this is a 'design flaw' in the hardware, but I'm not sure what that means.

Sticky Notes have a design flaw; they aren't very sticky and will easily fall off of whatever you have stuck them to. That's a flaw, but that's a flaw you want and that's the point.

BTW, my prediction is based off some stuff I saw on Macrumors that seemed reasonable to me. I'm not an engineer :(

  25. Ben says:

Out of the possible choices, none are decent to even vote. Apple will just state there is an issue and have their way out of it by offering what they will call a solution. Whatever they choose to do they will make it right. This is Apple after all, how many times have you seen them fully take care of their customers, a lot.

  26. thekevinmonster says:

If it's a software issue, perhaps Apple can even adjust the software in the 3GS and 3G to some extent (I'm not sure how different the radio hardware is.) That would be even better. "Hey, not only are we addressing this for the iPhone 4, but it's going to make the 3GS and 3G more reliable." Wouldn't that rock? (Why didn't they do it before? I don't know, why's the sun come up?)

  27. Church burner says:

Apple will admit to no wrongdoing. Around this time in 2012 we will see a recall. Just like time capsule.

  28. Jan says:

    it's a Verizon iPhone announcement! http://tinyurl.com/25jylyh

  29. dubbdee says:

What about the proximity sensor issue? This is a much greater concern of mine as I have a case for the phone but nothing is helping the sensor's issues. This needs more attention.

  30. Tom Stephens says:

    @Scout

Apple has already offered, in unambiguous language, tto provide a full refund to any dissatisfied customer. It is your choice if you choose to return the product and get another unit tomorrow, next week, next year or never. There is no added expense beyond the product itself so obviously this is free replacement.

No matter what Apple does, tomorrow you will read that it is not right/not enough/not what they should have done. If they were to refund every customer their money and give out free iPhones you would still read stories about that being wrong. At some point you have to take responsibility for your own purchasing decisions, forget what the blogs say, and get on with life.

  31. Petruchio says:

I'm in the UK, and although the "death grip" thing is an issue, I'm much more concerned about the proximity sensor. I have to make all calls using the speaker, as otherwise my ear starts dialling other people whilst I'm on the phone! Sort it out Apple. I love the itunes integration and app store in an iPhone but I will go elsewhere if this doesn't get resolved.

  32. kevlar says:

Free iGLOVE, left hand glove for everyone. Available in black or white.

  33. Ben says:

Announcing an iPhone on the Verizon network would be wrong on Apple's behalf during this time of devastation with the antenna issue. It's probably coming, but do you think they would announce it before your month is up with AT&T to return and cancel the contract renewal. I am glad they extended their return policy, but with AT&T you have 30 days to return it and cancel the contract renewal regardless of what Apple says their return policy is.

I am happy with it, yeah the antenna needs to be fixed but I am in no way going to bitch about it. Why get worked up over something that Apple will make right.

  34. Joe McG says:

I agree that the proximity sensor issue is a much bigger problem. I keep muting with my cheek. I already tried the reset and full restore but it's the same.

    Sincerely,

    Fat Cheek

  35. davistld01 says:

Quite sad to see the majority of votes swinging toward either Apple simply denying there is a problem and branding the press as liars...and merely band-aiding the problem with free bumpers for everybody. These are the expectations of this company that has captured so many of our dollars for so long, and has had us called "fanboys" because we appreciate the technology and iconic design of their products?

I like my iP4...but detest the fact that my face keeps muting calls, and that I've dropped more calls, and done it with more regularity than I ever did with my 3GS.

If Apple refuses to be aggressive in their addressing this issue...and only seeks to placate the public with a bumper giveaway...I'll definately take this phone back and buy a mint Nexus One that I have my eye on! Goodbye, Apple.

  36. Tis says:

Recall, to fix the antenna internally at the stores, get then back to you in a week.

I think that they will sell the recalled phones as new, or refurbished. Still they wouldn't be out billions of dollars for that.

  37. Misty says:

I think we're looking at a 2-tiered approach here. A recall is doubtful, but a redesign is needed. I think that they're going to redesign new iphones with some kind of internal bumper built in, but to appease people who already bought the phone, they'll be offering free bumpers to them, instead of offering to replace them. They may actually replace the phone with the internal bumper model to people who go in and make some noise, but I think they're hoping that most will just be okay with the free bumper.

  38. Alexb says:

I've heard that Apple have been in talks with a left handed rubber glove manufacturer. Apparently wearing this whilst on a call will prevent signal loss. I am sure that this will be announced today. ;-)

  39. impaler says:

This is why I don't buy a first-round product. Ever. My 3GS is just fine, thankyouverymuch.

  40. dionte says:

I think they'll announce 4.1 for the ipad.

  41. dionte says:

And a game center release date.

  42. Boots says:

If Apple blows it off and says there isn't a problem, when there obviously is, I will NEVER buy another Apple product.

  43. Jr says:

I won't settle for a freakin bumper, fix it right! What about the proximity sensor? I hate that my cheek put me on face time all the time. wTF apple

  44. Webvex says:

@Impaler, exactly. Luckily, there's never a shortage of people willing to pay to be beta testers.

  45. Kenji O. says:

iPhone 5th gen announcement? ;) Just kidding. Happy Friday!

  46. Michael says:

Goddamnit stop with the Verizon crap. Verizon turned the iPhone down because of this. Stop bringing this nonsense back up. You're making the baby Jesus cry.

  47. paper says:
