iPhone 4 best selling smartphone on AT&T, Verizon

250 Verizon and AT&T stores surveyed on what was their best selling smartphone, and according to BTIG Research, the number one answer on their board was... iPhone 4! It sat at the top of the charts at 89% of Verizon stores (tied with Droid Charge or Thunderbolt at 38% of those), and 65% of AT&T stores.

And while it only launched in February on Verizon, iPhone 4 has been out on AT&T for over a year, and the base hardware is a year old. That's it's not only still competitive, but still winning at the carrier outlets is interesting. (Not surprisingly, it's the top selling -- and only selling -- smartphone at Apple Stores as well, which just goes to show how large their dominant retail position really is.)

Anyone surprised by this?

  1. David M.D. says:

Not really surprising. iPhone is a juggernaut. Hands down. Then to top that, you want iOS, you only can get iOS on an iPhone. You want Android, you have hundreds of choices. To NOT be the best single selling phone would be more surprising to me.

    • Yeah, that's why the comparison always ends up being Android [smartphone] vs iOS [smartphone]. The numbers flip-flop then.

      • David M.D. says:

Yeah. As a rational Android lover and part time iOS user, I understand as far as smartphone OS goes, Android is king. It will take a bit to knock them down due to choice, pricing, and availability. As far as 'mobile' OS goes, it will take a lot to get iOS knocked out of 1st place simply because of the iPod throne. Then if you consider iPad to be part of the mobile market, it will be even harder.

That said, I believe both Apple and Google are not really caring too much about the places. There will always be room for 2 top dogs if they're evenly matched in share.

  2. I'm not surprised by the numbers but by the simplicity of the report. It sounds as if the stores were called [emailed?] and asked, which brings personal opinions.

Why not contact corporate and get the actual numbers?

Are my thoughts purely from the way this post was written or is it legit?

  3. Rotten Apple says:

Why are people still wanting to buy this device? Which at best is only a marginally decent phone. I thought that's the primary goal of buying a phone. You know to use as a phone. Apple has never to this day effectively addressed the antenna problem. Only to say "All phones have signal problems." OK here come the attacks but I can take it. When I buy a phone I look first at the most basic function, ability to send & receive calls. I've never had any issues with other smart phones on AT&T with calls. I finally lost it with my iPhone4 after a yr and got a Samsung Infuse. Not a single dropped call yet. Of that could change given AT&T's network but so far rock solid. And I don't have to have a bumper or be a human contortionist to hold it 'just like this' so it'll stay connected. But I guess I won't have long to enjoy it because Apple is gonna make the world quit selling Samsung phones and tablets. Oh and if you bought it willingly, which I did & it looks NOTHING like iPhone, you will have to return it to be destroyed and pay Steve Jobs a fee because I foolishly abandoned his product for the competition. OK go I'm ready for the flames.

Surprised? No. Just like I wouldn't be surprised that in an election between three liberals(Android) and one conservative(iPhone), the conservative wins because those who vote for a liberal end up splitting their vote between the three. In the end, the majority desired a liberal(Android), but the conservative(iPhone) wins the highest individual percentage point. I am surprised that this needs to be discussed.

  5. Homer Simpson says:

Even though I'm an avid Apple fanboy, I get really tired of seeing articles like this. Stats are so easily manipulated. And if it really is true, I really don't want Apple to dominate to the point where Google's Android becomes yesteryear's betamax. Competition is what pushes innovation.

  6. Anonymous says:

As someone at AllThingsD noted, what is surprising is that at 42% of Verizon and AT&T stores, a single Android device either ties or beats the iPhone in sales. Add in all the other Android devices that are sold in those stores, and it's easy to see why Android smartphones are growing so much faster than anything else.

  7. apostrafee says:

i dont understand why the majority of the articles on this site are apple beating android articles. if you jump over to any other forum or blog you'll see they dont really care. its like your trying to convince yourself rene

  8. Bob Marley says:

Only a Roidaholic would question the numbers ON A IPHONE BLOG SITE!

Troll alert! You are boring. Find something else to do than waaaaaaah!

  9. EagleyeSmith says:

    Nope. Duh. Seriously.

  10. Jonathan Seals says:

That's awesome, even with all the LTE and HSPA+ phones it's still holding strong.

  11. Guest says:

lol why is iphone 4 compared to only 4g lte android phones on verizon?

  12. Anonymous says:

This actually shows that Android is doing very well .. at least better than I expected. To see that in some stores ONE SINGLE ANDROID phone outsells the Iphone is mind blowing especially in AT&T stores. I knew that Verizon with their 4G phones could have that going for them. HTC Thunderbolt did outsell the Iphone when it first came out.. so Verizon did not surprise me too much .

But we all know Android is about choice of different devices ...so to have one single phone outsell the Iphone is almost impossible.. especially knowing the following the IPhone already has.. but what this story is telling me is that Android will still be selling iOS ... for a while
