Apple holding iPhone 4 press conference on Friday

Apple is going to be holding an iPhone 4-related conference on Friday, July 16 at 10pm PT, 1pm ET.

Although not specifically stated, it's not hard to imagine Apple will use the opportunity to address iPhone 4 antenna issues.

(Maybe iOS 4.1 being released in beta a couple weeks earlier than iPhone 3.1 was a precursor?)

More as this develops...

iPhone 4 recall? Users can still return them

Isaac says:

Ehh it's July 16 not June btw. Hoping for an answer from this conference

cj says:

lol well les see what kind of brain washing techniques they try

cj says:

its really not the antenna its all in your mind ... imagine as if your holding it like this and the problem never existed lol

RAMi.G says:

Is it AM or PM for the Pacific?

Jerry Hildenbrand says:

Make Jeremy go and report live. He needs something extra to do ;)

Ethan says:

Yeah cause it shouldn't be 10 pm..

Woodman500 says:

AM/PM...TOO MUCH GOOD STUFF!!!

DFoX says:

10am PT... I'm pretty sure that was a typo

elementbt says:

is there anyway to watch this live? if not will there be a video of it?

Butch says:

As far as I understand, the "fix" is "cosmetic", right? This isn't really going to solve anything; it'll just give people a more accurate idea of how bad the signal strength in their immediate vicinity is. So, the ball is thrown back into AT&T's court.
I have to wonder what else Apple could say in this conference.

Ralph says:

they are dropping price of bumper from $29 to $25. that is what press conf is for.

websyndicate says:

Is this the long awaited verizon rumor? I just hope this doesn't delay the white iPhone or they don't issue a recall.

Webvex says:

They're announcing their new series of PSAs titled "How to hold an iPhone."

Mr. Nelson says:

Lol man Apple you really screwed up...

Chobbs11 says:

No way were ever gonna see a recall. It's probably just a clarification and an announcement of the update. A reduction in the bumper price would be nice though

tom says:

bumpers should be free, at least. why should we have to pay for a fix that apple knew about all along?

Jr says:

Recall or not im returning my phone if this doesent get fixed, I don't wanna be stuck with an iPhone 4 that has this issue. What if they start producing phones without this hardware problem down the line.

Daniel Carter says:

Hopefully a long awaited release date for Canada....

Jeff B. says:

I agree that they should at least bite the bullet and give the bumpers away. The markup on those things has to be HUGE.
I still am waiting on the white ones to be released...hopefully they'll solve this problem and also the proximity sensor issue that folks seem to be having.

DFoX says:

They can't cost Apple more than Nintendo had to pay for all those gel Wii covers.
The bad thing is I lose reception whenever I have a case on my phone. My signals great without the case and death grip.

you_monster says:

Thinking about returning my iphone 4 and getting a Samsung Captivate

mrod79 says:

Wow, I guess it's really serious now....

Telelax says:

Please recall! I want my phone to work... And I want a shiney new one :D

impaler says:

Fix it, Apple. Don't blame AT, us, or anyone else. Fix the hardware shortfall. You'll earn points.

snakes2003g says:

either free bumpers a recall which mean apple swallowed alot of their pride on both. or an announcement all iphone 4 owners are to get their phones replaced for free at genius bars accross the contry or sending them ot apple to fixed which in a sense would also be a recall.

BobbyB says:

Kid u not, after tonight, hanging up the phone, dialing numbers, trying to activate face time... All with my cheek, this phone has been so disappointing (my second phone btw, returned the first one) Although it's a great looking, functional phone... Too bad the basic use of this thing is flawed... I hate it now, I'm lookin into sprint and the evo.. I wish it were different but apple has disappointed me, I miss my 3G.... :(

melb_guy says:

This is BIG news. It's even made my local paper in Melbourne Australia! A very rare thing for Apple to do. Hopefully now we will get an official answer. I have decided in the last few days now that I will not buy the iPhone 4, even if it gets released in Australia tomorrow (for example), until these antenna issues are totally fixed. I believe this conference will be a recall for all sold iPhones, and a revised international release schedule.

spades1412 says:

Its official!!! Apple will announce the White iPhone 4......on Verizon!!!

BobbyB says:

Who cares what service provider it's on!! The Phone has issues!!! Blaming AT&T on it's new signal calculations, oh please, obviously the reception issues and face dialing issues are a phone/hardware/software problem, has nothing to do with the provider and signal calculations, so now instead of dropping from 5 bars to 0, it'll be dropping from 3 to 0?? Do they think people are retarded? it's Apples fault, and apple needs to man the F*** up and fix this, Now.

killakow says:

recall.. but don't worry. Apple will give you a temperary iphone 3G 8GB in the mean time. enjoy

sting7k says:

Reality distortion field activate!

Jehu says:

You have 30 days to return the phone...people start returning the phones and that will be the recall. Apple will really know how you feel. Never will own an iphone don't like people telling me what to do with my phone and how to hold it...too much control, free yourself people return the phone.

Jason says:

iPhone on verizon being announced? Doubtful.
As for a recall? Who knows maybe. What else could it be about besides a recall or free bumper. I don't think they would even hold a press conference just to give away bumpers though.
I hope apple does recall the phone. Not only because it would be nice to hold it wrong lol, but also just to shove it in everyones face who said apple would not do anything about this, mainly the people who don't even have the phone and never have had the phone.
If apple does recall the phone and fix them then problem solved and let it be part of the past. Not every company is gonna make perfect products all the time and yes there will be major slip ups like this.
So let's all just hope that apple is doing the right thing and issuing a recall for all iPhone 4s.

Chris M says:

I hope apple recalls. But my problem is that If they recall ilm be left phoneless because I got the ip4 in a new contract. Hope att gives me a 8GB 3GS or 3G to make it through the fixing days.

Jason says:

I'm not sure how it would work, but I would think they would let us keep our faulty iPhone 4s until we could get the fixed iPhone 4s. I mean there are a ton of people with new contracts and who have sold their old iPhones I don't think they would be able to leave people without the phone on an active contract.
Glad I still have my 3GS in either case though

MoeDaSheik says:

Free Bumpers and refunds to previous bumper purchases!

Martin says:

It's so sad to say, I feel the phone needs to be recalled. I have already exchanged my phone once because of the yellow spots on the screen. The proximity sensor is a little off, and some of my apps keep crashing. I absolutely hate the LED flash. Every picture comes out poor. Extremely dissatisfied with the phone, however I am a loyal customer and I'll wait it out.

Pat Mahoney says:

Love the irony of the title of this post "Apple holding iPhone 4 press conference"....
Apple...."holding iPhone 4"...press conference....get it? How to hold the iPhone?

Timber says:

I'll crack up if all they say is that the white iPhone 4 is now available.....

elementbt says:

Screw the free bumbers idea!! might as well just tell everyone to put a piece of tape over it..Jobs even made a big deal about how nice it felt it your hand.. do the right thing and fix the damn phone

xgm says:

they will announce iphone 4 white which will have the same issues as the black one.

Captainjoel17 says:

Are they planning to hold it in the right or left hand?

bvonscott says:

This is just like the Toyota recalls... It's damages their image, but people still buy them based on years of positive perception. The haters wishing apple to go down in flames will be horribly disappointed.
I'm PC. I'm GM. I'm iPhone. I always buy the best and always will.

elementbt says:

wait... who told you GM was the best?

Cristo says:

It's probably cheaper for apple to just giveout free bumpers instead of having to fix all the iphones

Cristo says:

Wait do they charge you like a re-packing fee or anything like that if u return your iPhone 4 for a new one?

Jason says:

I wouldn't think so. I haven't heard anything about it.

Cristo says:

They better not because I'm gonna return mine even if it doesn't fix the problem I'll still have a brand new iPhone!! And does anyone know if I have an invisible shield on my current iPhone and if I return it will I b able to get a new one??

Jason says:

You should just stick with the phone you have now if you don't have any serious issues with it other than the antenna thing. No point in going through the process of switching phones if it isn't necessary. I hope they fix it though.
As for the the invisisheild you should call and check but I'm pretty sure you would have to buy a new one

Cristo says:

Yea and what if they don't fix it?? Plus not evryone is having this issue maybe if I get a new one it won't be defective!!
And I think I can probably get a free replacement for the invisible shield since it has lifetime warranty

Jason says:

The thing I'm curious about not everyone having this issue is are those who aren't having it just in a strong area of AT&T service? I can drop my phone down to 2 bars at home. But at a friends house just a few miles away I can't get the thing to go down one bar no matter how I hold it. I'm guessing he's closer to a tower than me. I guess what I was trying to say is if the anntenuation you are experiencing isn't that bad I wouldn't swap. Mines there but it's not that bad and doesn't bother me that much. Doesn't mean it won't be the same for you.
Now don't get me wrong. I do want it fixed and I do want to be able to hold the phone however I want. But if they don't announce that their gonna fix the antenna problem, which would be a stupid move, I will stick with the phone I have currently. Do what you feel is best.

Cristo says:

I think it's the antenna because I called AT&T and they said the coverage in my area was good they sent me a new sim card but it dint help it.. How I hold I'll go from 4 bars to one and if I just leave the phone by itself I'll get 5, when I had the 3GS I would always get 5 bars at my friends house no matter how I held it and now with the ip4 at his house I'll get 2 or 3
Hopefully this press meeting apple is having Friday will talk about this issue because I don't wanna go and spend $30 bucks on a bumper when first it's not my fault, and 2nd I hate the extra bulk

websyndicate says:

Finally Verizon iPhone Sweet Cant wait.

Jason says:

Cracks me up how everyone thinks this is them announcing the iPhone on verizon.
I can't see the bumper thing either. Doesn't even look appealing to me. I love the phone naked. That and I bought the iPhone 4 dock and the phone wouldn't fit in the dock unless I took it off everytime I needed to charge it.

Cristo says:

Haha i know me too, verizon might get it in a year or two
I know I like my iPhone naked too I like to show the beautiful body of a naked iPhone!!!

MS says:

I have a bumper on mine and I have no call quality issues. Not even inside my house where my 3GS dropped calls from time to time. Data is also quick. I'm not using wifi for now just to get a feel of the network/signal strength. All good for now :-)

Keisuke says:

Unless Apple is interested in a huge recall or class action suit-- even if they war to say "sorry" they put themselves into huge legal doo-doo admitting ANY fault.

Cristo says:

Well maybe ill have to spend the extra $30 bucks on the bumper n see how it works

Jason says:

You at lucky then. Lol I'm curious as to if the bumper does solve things as I have heard it does and doesn't so I'm guessing that it is a user based thing or something of the sort. I'd be willing to try it, but not for $30.
When the iPhone comes to verizon, if it ever does, and im sure it probably will at some point, it won't be in a press conference announced 2 days before the press conference itself. And besides that doesn't the droid x or whatever it is come out tommarow? I don't think their gonna want to kill some of the hype on that as I'm sure there are people who only go with droid because iPhone isn't on verizon.

Cristo says:

Yea but I don't think a class action suit will go through because they'll probably get away with it, with their "lap tests" proves that the ip4 doesn't have any problems, or Steve can just tell all of us to hold it a different way and problem solved

Jason says:

I'm really curious as to what the conference is about. I mean, a recall isn't completely out of the question, but at the same time doesn't seem feesable either. And I know they wouldn't hold a press conference just to say that their gonna give away free bumpers for it. So it seems as if a recall is the only possible reason for the conference

JJhammer says:

I don't know about you guys, but I read it as "Apple holding iPhone 4, press conference on Friday." I find it funnier and it will address the holding problems hopefully.

Jason says:

I'm still gonna hold out hope that apple and Steve jobs will do the right thing here and fix the problem for us. Now if this conference isn't about fixing the antenna problem I will be disappointed in apple. I guess all we can do is sit back and wait. And speculate.
Or maybe their announcing iPhone on sprint ;-)

Cristo says:

Yea I agree with you jason but i recall would even make things worse because they'll probably have to give people another phone while their other one is being fixed, because they can't just give you another one and send the old one after because they'll have to make double the amount of iPhones.. I'm really curious too I cant wait

Cristo says:

IPhone on sprint would be nice AT&T is so expesinve

Jason says:

Yea but who knows maybe that is why they are taking so long to say something about it. Maybe they built up a small stock unknown to anyone that are working right with no antenna problem and their ready to go. You never know anythings possible. Trying to keep up a good spirit about this whole thing lol.
And iPhone on sprint would suck for me lol. Where Iive sprint doesn't get crap worth of service. Funny thing everytime I see the ego commercial where it asks what will you do with the Eco first. I always think hold it up as high as I can and try to get service lol

Jason says:

Yea that's suppose to be evo. Evil iPhone autocorrct strikes again lol

Dave says:

I find the title of this news story quite ironic :D

bvonscott says:

As I write this I'm holding the little band on the left side and my signal isn't dropping and I'm in a so called "low reception area". Lol haters

Jackifus says:

I think they'll offer to put a non-conducive coating on the antenna. And I'll bet that current delays are caused by them coating those phones in production.
They'll wrap that in sales numbers: most successful product launch ever. They'll assert that they problem is minimal because exceedingly few phones have been returned.
I have an iPhone and live in San Francisco - poor reception area.
I can drop a signal at will. But day to day, it really doesn't affect me. It's a fantastic machine.

Freiteez says:

iPhone 4 recall. Fixed iPhone 4 white released! :p might as well hope right?

H says:

This is my first iPhone ever and I haven't had any of the problems that others have been having. I intentionally cover the strip with my hand and nothing happens! My proximity sensor works great, and while I get spotty coverage, I think that is mainly AT&T.
While I would love a free bumper, I don't think Apple would do that. My guess is that they will put some sort of invisible cover over the strip so that it is fixes for the people who have the iPhone 4 now and for the ones in production, find a way to fix it.
Call me crazy but would there be a way to switch the gsm antenna up to the top strip? I mean who touches there? Just a thought.

mbp1915 says:

Just a question.. I've heard lots of reports out of the USA about the antenna problem, but not much from the UK or other countries.. Is this just an AT&T problem ??

ichorus says:

Darn BBC typoshttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10641910
I was getting excited to hear it today.

Jackifus says:

@1915 It only occurs when one has a marginal signal. That's ATT 's specialty.
@H FCC mandates antenna be at the bottom.

Woody says:

There have been problems in other countries reported also. As per usual AT&T is getting the blame for flawed device. I have an IP4 and the problem exist for more than a few of my friends also with IP4s. Everyday that they pretend it is user error or AT&T problems, makes competitng devices like the Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria and upcoming BB 9800 look that much better to customers that were thinking of getting a new phone, but hear of the bad press and no pending fix.

marketsqhero says:

@Jackifus
The antenna goes all the way around the body, the radio might be at the bottom, but not the antenna.

ShevonJames says:

Free Bumper with iPhone purchase is going to be discussed.
This brings up the iPhone 5th Generation. WILL THEY CHANGE THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE ? or REMAIN AS THOUGH THIS IS A NONE ISSUE?

csullivan1980 says:

I'm very curious to hear what this invite-only press conference is going to be about. I doubt Apple will do a recall, I can only imagine how much of an inconvenience that would be for some people. Giving away a free bumpers, I don't think that would be considered news worthy. If I had to take a guess it would be addressing the antenna issues. No doubt Apple has gotten some pretty bad heat from customers, class action suits and Consumer Report's review was no help all not even a month after the release of the iPhone 4. There is no way the people who got their hands on the 1st batch of iPhone 4s could have predicted that THIS was going to happen. Plus, if Apple were to do a recall what would that mean for all those orders currently out for the iPhone 4? Would they be cancelled/delayed to a TBA date??? And what about the white iPhone 4???
As for a Verizon iPhone, if that was going to be announced tomorrow (Haha, fat chance) it would be a lot of switches who have held out until now, like me, SUPER-PISSED!

Paul says:

This will probably last about 30 seconds, "Dear iPhone users. Stop being tards and hold your phone like we tell you to. Now leave me alone about this stupid crap, we have more important things to do. Kthxbye"-Steve

ichorus says:

@paul, haha yeah or it will be a 30 second demonstration of how to hold it properly. :)

Shrike says:

My prediction:
They'll recall, but not replace the whole unit. They'll take users phones and apply an insulating coating around the antennas, and return it to users. A voucher for bumper cases in the meanwhile for people who have to wait.
All iPhones past week 29 or so will have the insulating coating built in.

ian says:
  • in a email frm steve, Holding a press conference Friday.... and we're not going to hold it wrong.
    Steve
    Sent from my iPhone
Tristan Thomas says:

Its about time. I have been waiting for a solution that did not require me to spend my money to fix something that was not even my fault.
I doubt that they will give us announce a free case as a solution later today but I pretty much know how things are going to happen tomorrow. I read an article at http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com/ that spoke about it. You should check it out.

Joeie says:

You’ve got it in one. Couldn’t have put it bteter.
