AT&T: Keep grandfathered unlimited data on iPad 2, $100 off original iPadt

Worried about your unlimited AT&T iPad data if you upgrade to iPad 2, or maybe you just want to save $100 on an original iPad? Well, good news on both fronts!

First up, AT&T has confirmed to Engadget that, if you have an original iPad with a grandfathered unlimited 3G data plan, you'll be able to keep it if you upgrade to iPad 2. (We're guessing most people would have just swapped microSIMs and hoped for the best but it's good to hear it won't be a problem.) New users, of course, will only be able to get the 250MB or 2GB capped plans.

Second, if you don't have an iPad yet and price is the reason why, AT&T is also matching Apple's recent discount, shaving $100 off the cost of an original iPad 3G. That means starting price is $529 and they'll toss in a free month of data. (If you want a Wi-Fi model for $499, check Apple.)

AT&T: Keep grandfathered unlimited data on iPad 2, $100 off original iPad

That's good news, how much for a plan w/ iPad 2? I have the unlimited data w/ my iPhones. Would it be like $30 more on my bill?

I still can't grasp why anyone, who already owns an iPhone, would buy a data plan for an iPad, when it's totally free, quick, and easy to jailbreak and use connect with MyWi from the iPhone (other than battery concerns).
I don't jailbreak anymore, myself, because I grew very tired of it. But, I'd jailbreak again in a second before I'd buy an iPad data plan.

Convenience, more data, and don't have to jailbreak. Not everyone is a jailbeaking tech geek on an unlimited plan. Hotspots are OK when you're sitting down for a longer session, but the beauty of the instant-on iPad is being able to look something up or check messages quickly and then turn it off. Some people want their iPads to be as easy and quick as their iPhones, and sometimes you don't even have your iPhone handy (gasp!).

On AT&T, it's cheaper to use MyWi.. You can get the 2GB data plan for $25 and each additional GB is $10
So..if you fill your iPhone data.. you can get 2GB of extra data for $20.. ($5 less than having iPad + 3G with 2GB)

If you've had any experience with MyWi On Demand (I'm not saying you haven't), you would know that instant on is exactly what you get from their solution. I refuse to pay AT&T twice for data and I'm not giving Apple extra money for 3g + WiFi on my iPad. It's as simple as setting up On Demand ONCE and allowing your iPad to connect to your iPhone whenever it utilizes web services. Works like a charm for me!

I own MyWi, and used it when I was jailbroken, and you're right that it is fast and quite convenient enough when money isn't growing from your tree out front. But in fairness, if one has the disposable income to have a separate plan, then by all means, like Webvex says, it's just that much more convenient to not have to worry about tethering each time you want to connect. Especially if you forget your iPhone, or have it somewhere too distant (or don't have a charger).
But, I do agree that for me, personally, I'd rather save the extra money and use MyWi from my phone, than pay AT&T anymore money. ;)

"I still can’t grasp why anyone, who already owns an iPhone, would buy a data plan for an iPad, when it’s totally free"
MyWi isn't free, Einstein. Although it is worth every penny it costs.

As strange as it sounds, I cannot use MyWi or the Personal Hotspot feature where I work. I can use 3G all I want, but hotspots = "rogue hotspots" and will very quickly raise the ire of corp security. And in case you're wondering.. yes, they do track down unauthorized hotspots.

When I get the new IPad2 all I half to do change the micro sim card out and I can keep everything the same?? it this true?? anyone??

Found this when I googled the microsim swap question before and saved it for future reference. Can't guarantee it as I've not tried it.
"iPad 3G using iPhone 4 micro-sim:
I repeated the same procedure as before (popping in micro-sim); however this time, prior to enabling cellular data, I made a change to my iPad's APN settings. The APN settings are like the login credentials for the data network. In many cases they are detected over-the-air, but this time they were not.
Here are the APN settings that are required:
APN name: wap.cingular
username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password: CINGULAR1
After changing the APN settings and enabling cellular data I again used Safari to test out my internet connection. It stuttered at first and I thought I had failed, but soon the connection picked up and I was browsing the web over 3G. It was very exciting to use my iPad over 3G for the first time all without having to pay for an additional data plan.
The settings are not static, so once you swap the SIM cards back, the iPad will revert to its default configuration. Since there are several tiny parts involved, this is probably not something you would want to attempt on a subway or while in the airport. However, if you're in a pinch and really don't want to pay AT&T twice, this is a workable alternative."
"

I never signed up for a data plan because I only use my iPad out of the house to write notes at uni.

You mean to tell me that there are people with iPads who have been on the unlimited plan without canceling data for even one month? lol...Or is it that if you bought an iPad 3G and signed up for unlimited data once you'll be eligible for it until the end of time. (or until iPad 2 is released, whichever is sooner)

I have been exploring for a little for any high-quality articles or weblog posts on this kind of area . Exploring in Yahoo I eventually stumbled upon this site. Studying this information So i am happy to convey that I have a very good uncanny feeling I discovered just what I needed. I most surely will make certain to do not put out of your mind this website and give it a glance regularly.
