A tale of two bigger iPhones

A tale of two bigger iPhones

One of the more popular rumors making the rounds right now is that Apple will release not one but two new, bigger iPhones this year. The first would be the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the second, a 5.5-inch Apple "phablet". These rumors aren't coming from overly sensational, overly outlandish sources,...

iOS 7.1: What did it fix for you and what's still broken?

iOS 7.1 is live for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and with it a whole bevy of fixes and additions. It also means you've likely scoured through every change to find what'...
Incipio Feather Case for iPhone 5s review

Incipio Feather Case for iPhone 5s review

The Incipio Feather Case for iPhone 5s is exactly what the name implies — an iPhone 5s case that's as light and easy as a feather. It has a snug fit and no bezel on the size, but it's quick to put on and take off. It's even got a cute little kickstand, and comes in a multitude of colors! Check...

iPhone 6: Six things I'd like to see!

iPhone 6 fantasies will no doubt reach fetishistic levels at some point, but we're far enough out from the fall, and from the inevitable leaks that will come as fall approaches, that many possibilities, many dreams, remain open to us. What with the all the new Android phones at MWC dropping like...
Galaxy S5 or iPhone 5s: Which phone should you get?

Galaxy S5 or iPhone 5s: Which phone should you get?

Everything you need to know to choose the best phone for you — Galaxy S5 or iPhone 5s! The Galaxy S5 has only just been announced while the iPhone 5s has been available since September 2013. However, until the iPhone 6 launches — presumably in September of 2014 — they'll be the two top phones...
iPhone 5S and HTC One M8

The new HTC One (M8) and the iPhone 5s

If you want an aluminum phone, you've come to the right place. The iPhone is no stranger to metal, of course. (And presumably it'll stay that course with the iPhone 6 later this year.) But today, Android smartphone manufacturer HTC announced its newest flagship with an old name — the HTC One....
iPhone 5c review: 6-months later

iPhone 5c review: 6-months later

Editor's note: The iPhone 5c was released 6 months ago today. Since I've been using the iPhone 5s almost exclusively since then I wanted someone else, someone who's been using the iPhone 5c day in and day out, to write the follow up for Apple's other new phone. Someone perhaps not as steeped in...
How can Apple avoid another iPhone 5c?

How can Apple avoid another iPhone 5c?

Apple doesn't break out sales numbers for individual iPhone models, but other companies keep an eye on things. And since the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s were introduced last fall, one thing's become clear: the iPhone 5c sales haven't burned up the charts. How can Apple avoid that going forward?...
iPhone 5s review: 6-months later

iPhone 5s review: 6-months later

The iPhone 5s launched roughly 6 months ago. It was greeted by the usual ennui over its unchanged design and un-embiggened screen, and skepticism over the real-world utility of its Touch ID fingerprint identity sensor and 64-bit Apple A7processor. The iSight camera was well received, even though...

iPhone 5s now available SIM-free in the U.S.

U.S. customers can now buy the iPhone 5s without a SIM. This has been an option for iPhone customers outside the United States since launch, and the closest you could come in the U.S. is buying an iPhone 5s off contract with a T-Mobile US SIM. But you can now use a SIM from any carrier you choose, provided that it's GSM-compatible. Like all off-contract iPhones, the SIM-less iPhone 5s starts at $649 for 16GB, and ships in one to two weeks.

Initially having only arrived for iPhone, BlackBerry has now gone ahead and updated their BBM chat app to include support for the iPad and iPod Touch, though it's not real iPad support. How is the quality of your iPhone 5s low-light video?

How is the quality of your iPhone 5s low-light video?Since I've gotten my iPhone 5s, I haven't taken a ton of video, but I've switched to video mode enough to know that I feel as if video quality isn't so great. After asking around and performing a quick internet search, it appears that I'm not alone either. Some people seem to have the issue, while others don't. Here are some sample shots of what I'm experiencing with low-light video...

Apple reportedly exploring 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 for 2014, pressure sensitive iPhone 6s for 2015

Rumors of large-screen iPhones have been around for a while now, more specifically as an option Apple's looking into for the 2014 iPhone 6. With the launch of the new, more gesture-friendly iOS 7, rumors of curved displays, which would better suit them, have followed. Now we're once again getting some numbers, 4.7- and 5.5-inches, along with some more wish-list features, namely pressure sensitivity. Tim Culpan and Adam Satariano, reporting for Bloomberg:

Olloclip 4-in-1 lens system for iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s review

Olloclip recently released an update to their current lens system for iPhone which is supposed to bring with it better overall optics and a new macro option. In the past we've been impressed with the results the old Olloclip system produced when it came to taking wide-angle, macro, and fisheye shots on the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5. Now that I've had my hands on the new 4-in-1 system for a while now and had the chance to test it out with my iPhone 5s, here are the results...

iPad Air vs iPhone 5s: iSight and FaceTime camera shootout!

While the iPad Air now has the same, improved front-facing FaceTime HD camera as the iPhone 5s - and every other 2013 iOS device - its rear-facing iSight camera remains very much unchanged from the iPad 4 and original iPad mini. What has changed however is the software and hardware that power it. With iOS 7 and the very same Apple A7 found in the iPhone 5s - and the very same image signal processor (ISP) - the iPad Air could see an overall boost in quality anyway. To measure how it stacks up, we put the 5 megapixel iPad Air camera up against the 8 megapixel camera, not see if it would win - it doesn't have a chance - but to see how close it can come!

Beyond the main carriers in the UK, there's a pretty thriving MVNO scene, and one such smaller provider, Virgin Media, is set to start offering both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Without telling us how much it will cost you for each one, Virgin Media has at least said the two phones will be available from November 22.

Apple A7: Way more power than a phone needs to have

When Brian Klug joined me on the Vector podcast last week, I asked him if including the Apple A7 chipset in both the iPhone 5s and the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini meant the phone was way overpowered, or the tablets were way underpowered. He answered in the best way possible - that the phone was ridiculously overpowered. As part of his iPad Air review, Brian's colleague, Anand Lai Shimpi, puts some context to that ridiculousness. From AnandTech:

Space gray the most popular iPhone 5s color

The space gray iPhone 5s appears to have been the most popular model in the United States in the first month after launch. The silver model was the second most popular, while gold was third. Though the iPhone 5s has been difficult to find for many, the silver and gold models have faced greater supply constraints than the space gray model, contributing to its popularity. This data comes from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, by way of MacRumors:

Sprint reports Q3 2013 earnings, 1.4 million iPhones sold

Quarterly earnings season continues, and this time it's the turn of Sprint with their Q3 2013 results. All-in-all it isn't a great quarter for the carrier, though operating losses may have shrunk, it's the declining subscriber numbers that will potentially sound the most alarm bells. On a positive note for Sprint, and for Apple, it seems iPhone sales are doing OK.
