The new HTC One (M8) and the iPhone 5s

If you want an aluminum phone, you've come to the right place. The iPhone is no stranger to metal, of course. (And presumably it'll stay that course with the iPhone 6 later this year.) But today, Android smartphone manufacturer HTC announced its newest flagship with an old name — the HTC One....

iPhone 5c review: 6-months later

Editor's note: The iPhone 5c was released 6 months ago today. Since I've been using the iPhone 5s almost exclusively since then I wanted someone else, someone who's been using the iPhone 5c day in and day out, to write the follow up for Apple's other new phone. Someone perhaps not as steeped in...
How can Apple avoid another iPhone 5c?

How can Apple avoid another iPhone 5c?

Apple doesn't break out sales numbers for individual iPhone models, but other companies keep an eye on things. And since the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s were introduced last fall, one thing's become clear: the iPhone 5c sales haven't burned up the charts. How can Apple avoid that going forward?...
5 problems a 5-inch iPhone solves for Apple

5 problems a 5-inch iPhone solves for Apple

I've been writing about a 5-inch iPhone 6 for well over a year now, but most of it has been long-form, exploring the market potential, screen resolution options, interface scaling issues, and why it all matters. This is the opposite of that. This is 5 simple reasons why a 5-inch iPhone 6 does...

Sprint reports Q3 2013 earnings, 1.4 million iPhones sold

Quarterly earnings season continues, and this time it's the turn of Sprint with their Q3 2013 results. All-in-all it isn't a great quarter for the carrier, though operating losses may have shrunk, it's the declining subscriber numbers that will potentially sound the most alarm bells. On a positive note for Sprint, and for Apple, it seems iPhone sales are doing OK.

A7 in the iPad: more power, more savings

Going in to yesterday’s Apple Mac and iPad event, the expectation was that we would get new iPads. The good money was also that these new iPads would get new processors. The previous two generations of iPads had followed the introduction of new iPhones and had incorporated an upgraded version of that processor. But the new iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini? They both sport the A7 processor as the month-old iPhone 5s.

The A7 is a 64-bit 1.3GHz dual-core CPU coupled with what’s believed to be a PowerVR G6430 GPU. The A7 has an advanced image signal processor, a “secure enclave” for storing and processing the Touch ID fingerprint sensor data, and offloads accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass motion-tracking to a dedicated low-power M7 coprocessor. The A7 is a powerful beast, but is it enough to handle an iPad?

iPhone 5s camera review, straight from Patagonia

The iPhone 5s improved upon the iPhone 5's camera in many ways. In our own camera comparison, I found that the iPhone 5s performed exceptionally well, especially when it came balancing colors and exposure. This was extremely evident in panorama comparisons. If you're still wanting more image samples, the guys over at Austin Mann have an amazing review of the iPhone 5s' camera posted. Not only do they have lots of sample images, they went straight to Patagonia to get them.
