Apple adds new Read Them Here First section to Newsstand

Apple has added a new section to iTunes that features magazines with issues that are published ahead of the print edition or other digital editions. Called Read Them Here First, the section currently features twenty magazines from Hearst publishing, including Cosmopolitan, Popular Mechanics, and Car and Driver. TechCrunch’s Darrell Etherington reports that the exclusivity window for new issues will vary by publication:

The Wall Street Journal finally comes to Newsstand

It took a long while, but The Wall Street Journal has finally come to Apple's iOS Newsstand. The paper joins thousands of other publications that are publishing via the magazine/newspaper service, and like many, the Journal's gone for a traditional layout that echoes that of the dead tree version. That said, the Newsstand distribution of the Journal is significantly more flexible than its paper cousin, offering full-screen image viewing, three text sizes, social network sharing options (that frustratingly don't use the built-in iOS sharing and require separate authorizations), and faster navigation between articles. It's not quite the authentically-digital that is The Magazine, but it's better than the PNG/JPG images that many publications are unfortunately vomiting into Newsstand.

Time Inc. finally agrees to offer digital subscriptions through Newsstand

Time Inc. has yet to offer digital subscription services through Newsstand due to issues with Apple's terms. Time's new CEO, Laura Lang, said getting their content to iPhone and iPad users would be one of her top priorities.

The National Geographic Traveler Magazine has arrived in the App Store and it promises to bring some unique features to the iPad content. For starters, interactive photo galleries, 360 degree photos and detailed maps of areas covered.

I noticed an oddity on the Home screen of my iPad 2 the other day. One of the magazines that I'm subscribed to in Newsstand decided to place itself on the Home screen, instead of where it's supposed to reside in the Newsstand folder. Luckily there's an easy fix, and today we're going to show you how to get around it if you ever experience the same problem.

Publishers can't fix iPad magazine app frustration

Justin Williams from Carpeaqua breaks down the egregiously horrible user experience involved in just trying to get an issue of GQ, Esquire, or Sports Illustrated magazine loaded on the iPad.

Reading magazines on the iPad is an exercise in frustration. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. As great a device and, more importantly, platform as Apple has created, magazine publishers have done nothing short of fumble the snap in their own end zone.

Williams provides a list of 10 things publishers can do to help improve things, and it's a good list but it doesn't address the core problem -- publishers are the wrong people to fix it.
