iOS 4 features: Safari URL bar gets “awesome”

iOS 4 safari awesome bar

When you tap into the Safari’s URL bar in iOS 4 and start typing, Safari starts to do a “keyword search”, i.e. display predictive results based on your bookmarks and history. Anything that contains the text you’re inputing either in the URL or history is listed below the URL field so the moment you see what you want you can just tap it and go.

This makes it easier to find something if you don’t remember the exact web page address or if you know you recently saw a site, and know what it was about, but don’t remember where exactly it was. Just start typing what you do remember and let Safari do the heavy lifting. Highly convenient and certainly “awesome”. [To misappropriate the term from Mozilla]

When you try out the new Safari URL bar, let us know how it works for you. For more, see our complete iOS 4 feature walkthrough.

So did you upgrade to iOS 4?
  1. Wesley says:

Since the iPhone’s Safari History is cleaned very often, I never used this bar for things other than entering the whole address.

    Hopefully this changes now.

  2. Mknapper1 says:

I hate how there are “cancel” buttons now instead of just switching back and forth between the search bar and URL bar!

  3. Danny says:

    Me to

  4. iDavey says:

Is this really something to be excited over? I thought every browser had that function…

  5. I think it would be great to get rid of the search bar; instead, build them all into one (similar to Chrome and FF). Not only would it save space, but it resolves the issue that @Mknapper1 is speaking of.

  6. dschey says:

how do you enter more than one word in the url-field? on my keyboard there is no space button.

  7. alf says:

Lol my droid has done been able to do this. But I’m glad it’ll be on my new iphone

  8. Jimbo says:

Good thing Mozilla came up with the awesomebar first; if Apple did, they would have filed some overcrowd patent on looking up stuff in a text field.

  9. Brian says:

Android already had this… Maybe they should file a patent and sue crApple lol

  10. mhall says:

    hmmmm…. sounds like chrome’s omnibar to me…

  11. zero credibility says:

it’s sad that people have got nothing better to do than troll iphone specific forums.. get a life, or just bored fellating each other on the droid forums?

  12. i cant handle this bs says:

seriously? this is absolutely ridiculous. ive tried my best to ignore the immaturity in all these apple vs. android postings but i really cant handle this bs anymore. apple users have GOT to come to terms with the fact that this new iOS4 is nothing to rant and rave about. youre getting features that other platforms have been using for years and the fact that apple fanatics are making them seem holier than thou just because theres an ‘i’ before their name is childish.

no one is cyber blowing anyone, this feature of iOS4 deserves a sentence (NOT a blog post) in a FAQ help forum and, in all honesty, the android supporters are right even though their delivery seems to be that of a 2nd grader.

    • I have a brain :D says:

@i cant handle this bs, don’t talk about immaturity, my friend, when you have proved yourself to be the quintessence of immaturity. You’re not solving anything by saying these things. If people are happy that they and their iPhones can finally do the things their Android-bearing friends can, let them be happy about it. It’s pretty obvious that people buy the phones they want, and your childish rants aren’t going to change that.

  13. Rudy says:

Yeah my point exactly. Is this really something to get excited over? A whole blog for one single update?

  14. zero credibility says:

    @i cant handle this bs

why do you give a crap ? this is informative for those of us with iphones nothing more. noone is ranting and raving … apart from you. this is a place to discuss features. what the f**K are you even doing here ? you don’t see me going over to the android / rim / wm7 / symbian sites complaining about stuff on your phones .. the fact that you are even here wasting time on things that don’t even effect you make you very very sad .. you have far too much time on your hands.. get a girlfriend/boyfriend and do something constructive instead of being a dick ..

  15. jbrandonf says:

    LMAO. Taken straight from webOS.

  16. frac says:

and…’when will all you androids realise you’ve GOT to come to terms with the fact that iPhone/iOS users couldn’t give a monkey’s bum crack for you and your phones’

  17. i cant handle this bs says:

The fact that you both responded to my comment like children, who cant form complete sentences, proves my point. Enjoy your new “awesome” url bar. I have nothing else to say.

  18. Computers says:

what exactly is your e mail i wanna discuss for you about a thing
