Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.5

We were fairly certain the Verizon iPhone 4 would require a new version of iOS, sporting a new CDMA radio stack, and it seems it will -- iOS 4.2.5 (8E128).

Current GSM iPhones are on iOS 4.2.1 but it's unknown if they'll also get a bump to iOS 4.2.5 when the Verizon iPhone ships on February 10.

In addition to the CDMA radio, iOS 4.2.5 on Verizon will support the new mobile hot spot feature announced today, and while there's no word on whether or not that will remain exclusive to Verizon, no other carrier has announced it yet either.

What do you think, will everyone get iOS 4.2.5 on February 10 or will Apple let Verizon be Verizon for a while first?

Verizon to offer CDMA iPad 3G
  1. Boots says:

Att would keep a few more people around if they allowed it.

  2. Chaotic Buddhist says:

I personally have no need for a mobile hotspot so it isn't a draw for me at all.

  3. Tipb fan says:

So that means if I'm out I can use my iPhone to be a wifi hot spot for my wifi only iPad?

  4. mdntblu says:

I just downloaded 4.2.5 from a torrent and installed it on my AT&T iPhone 4 and now I have mobile hot spot. Sweet. Glad I kept my $30/month unlimited data plan.

  5. tomuky says:

What I want to know is if I can get an unlimited data plan similar to what I have on my Verizon Blackberry. I don't see why not.

    • ZOFOURTWENTY says:

This is straight from the FAQ's

Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements? Yes, iPhone customers will need to choose from any of the current Nationwide plans. Customers will also be required to activate a data package, pricing will be announced at a later date.

I hope I can use the plan I currently have on my BB, don't see why not

  6. Mark says:

The big question is, how much is big V going to charge for using the mobile hotspot feature? No way it's going to be included in your data plan.

    • Pat.b says:

I was wondering the same, my guess is at least 10 a month.... That's what the droids are but who knows, they might surprise us.

    • Boots says:

I think it will be no cost. I mean if the person goes over their limit they get charged a ridiculous amount for overages. Unless verizon gives unlimited data... Lol you never know

    • Ty says:

I currently have Mobile Hotspot on my Palm Pre-- If I switch, so does my subscription to it. I keep it and unlimited data. FTW.

  7. Bengillam says:

It all comes down to the carriers. maybe this will be a feature tied to te existing tethering system which has to be enabled by carrier for extra charge.

With UK networks becoming stupid on data allowances with new iPhone contracts on sensible tariff only having 500mb,( 18 months ago it was unlimited) I doubt we will see this as a new free feature here

  8. Dday says:

Will these software updates be different by carrier?

  9. SockRolid says:

  10. yo mama says:

verizon, SUCK, whichever way you look at it

  11. Nodius says:

@mdntblu: There is no torrent of 4.2.5!

  12. Chris says:

With talks of 4.3, why waste time giving AT&T 4.2.5. I think it stays that way until we all see a 4.3 update.

    • Mark says:

Not trolling, but would it be to avoid the fragmentation tag? Although the hardware is already fragmented - since if you do switch from ATT to Verizon, you will likely need a new case for your Verizon iPhone.

  13. I think that we should gat iOS 4.2.5 but it wont be long till iOS 4.3 when the iPad 2 comes out so there isn't much point bringing 4.2.5.

  14. Ty says:

I hope we all who are upgrading phones don't do so and miss out on the chance to get and iPhone 5. I'd be super pissed! If the iPhone 5 doesn't have LTE on it though, I think I am waiting....

  15. Terry says:

    Let the fragmentation begin!

  16. Drdoom420 says:

guess what I'm doing on my ip4 right now with out wifi having a conversation and posting this at the same time 

  17. Omar Little says:

    Sorry kids, but DROID DOES!

  18. Killer says:

    Mywi > Verizon walla

    Bye!

  19. Glenn says:

Again it will be the best deal in areas where service is the same. Carriers are in the business to make money. Watch for hidden fees. I believe verizon has more than AT&T, but the big T also has fees, but seems to be more up front. I would like to see one year contracts with the iPhone so you can get your yearly new phone. If you do go verizon, then you should be able to switch to iPhone 5 when it comes out, but that is in a perfect world.

  20. weehooherod says:

AT&T users, just jailbreak your iPhone and tethering is magically available to you for free.

  21. Lance G says:

I wonder if there will be any significant difference between 4.2.1 and 4.2.5 besides the mobile hotspot and the fact that it will be running on verizon!!

  22. Verizon iPhone says:

I hope, for all iPhone users' sake that they do not just "let Verizon be for Verizon for a bit" Apple has always kept their devices uniform as far as OS updates go, it's one of the big turn ons compared to say, Android. It was one of the reasons I bcame an iPhone user, and personally I don't Apple straying from their usual ways just because Verizon is finally carrying the iPhone. Just my 2 cents:)

    • knightforge says:

Remember, though, that When Apple released the iPad it had IOS 3.2 and when the iPhone 4 came out it had 4.0 which iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch could upgrade to but not the iPad. iPad didn't get the IOS 4.X upgrade until 4.2.1. So I think Verizon will have 4.2.5 exclusively until IOS 4.3 comes out and then everyone will get that update and be on the same page.

  23. fayek says:

well regarding whether the GSM iphone will get 4.2.5 or will both go to 4.3, i personally doubt it. they might look the same but these are 2 different iphones. so im thinking it will be just like when blackberry upgrades an OS. you have GSM OSes and CDMA OSes. maybe vzn iphone 4.2.5 and then later at&t iphone gets 4.3 then verizon iphone get 4.3.5 ... etc. and that way i think they can control what apps are integrated in each OS version and they can choose not to add mobile hotspot to GSM one.
