iOS 5 features: iPhone weather app gets hourly forecasts

iOS 5 weather app hourly forecasts

With iOS 5, the built in iPhone weather app finally gets an update to include hourly forecasts. You can now tap on the daily forecasts and they'll slide down to reveal hour-by-hour breakdowns of upcoming weather.

It's certainly not going to hurt more full-featured weather apps in the app store, and it's nothing as sexy as, for example, adding landscape mode for radar views, but it's nice to see the long-neglected weather app get something at least. (It's pretty much been untouched since its debut in iOS 1.)

    Boring...

Does the weather app icon update to the current temperature now?

  3. Bbp says:

No the icon does not update

  4. Montana says:

A 36 hour forescast would be great, that's the one i use the most in the weather channel app..

  5. John in SF says:

There appears to be a "location" icon under the graphic. Could this indicate that a dynamic current location may be used, in addition to static cities? I have not seen this feature mentioned anywhere.

Now, if it would show the temperature and conditions in your specific part of San Francisco, where it can vary 20° from one part of the City to the other and have totally different weather, that would be cool!

BTW, those temps have got to be Celsius. Weird either way. And the date appears to be Nov. 6, 2008...

  6. bsangs says:

The best thing they could do with this "Weather" app is give us the ability to delete its useless a**.

Apple could do so much with the Weather App. I wonder why they have chosen to neglect it for so many years? Apple implementation and usability sometime surpasses other apps and developers, it would be nice to have that in the Weather App.

The "Location" icon is the location services arrow beside the 3 "page dots"

I imagine in part it is to do with the fact that they probably have to pay someone for the data (in this case Yahoo). Many other weather apps include a lot more because they're from companies where weather data is their business and the apps are either paid apps or ad supported.

  8. Michael Mazzacane says:

Now if only they'd stop using Yahoo weather, that is the more inaccurate weather service ever created.

  9. Crazy Greg says:

Why bother. I stopped using that app in os 1. Too many websites, and since 3rd party apps, too many very well done apps that Apple's own has long been forgotten. Sorry apple, it's WAY too late!!!

Wait, which app does full screen radar on landscape rotation?

Thank you to all of you and have a Nice day !

While this may not seem sexy, the fact that it does this on it's own means Devs will be able to plug into it. Imagine lockinfo with up to date local weather based on your current location & hour by hour weather that you can access Via the notification tray!

We have already been using an app called RainClock which can show the hourly forecasts. And you don't need any iPhone4 to run it.

I really like the speed, simplicity, and layout of the iPhone's built-in weather app.

Is there any way of transferring it to the iPad?

  15. Really enjoyed this article.Much thanks again. Great.
