How to view content from your Mac on your Apple TV with AirPlay Mirroring

If you own a Mac running OS X Mountain Lion and either a second or third generation Apple TV, you have the ability to display content from your Mac on your TV wirelessly with AirPlay Mirroring. If you are familiar with how AirPlay works for iOS with display mirroring, it's very similar.

Lightning to Digital AV adapter could be pushing lower res H.264 because it's not yet capable of streaming raw HDMI

Earlier today we linked to a post by Cabel Sasser on the Panic Blog about Apple's Lightning Digital AV connector, which is basically their HDMI adapter. Sasser had discovered that the adapter provided a less-than-1080p signal, broke it open, and found a tiny computer contained inside. Lots of speculation followed as to why that was, and what might be going on. A comment left on the Panic Blog by "Anonymous Coward", however, implies internal Apple knowledge of the matter, and purports to have the answer. In part, the comment says:

HBO Go adds AirPlay support

HBO Go has been updated to version 2.0, bringing support for Apple's AirPlay feature to the app. HBO Go users can now stream video from any device running iOS 6 to any Apple TV that’s been updated to software version 5.1.1 or later.

Netflix and YouTube plan to take on Apple's AirPlay with DIAL

DIAL, an open standard form of wireless playback, is being given a rather large push by both Netflix and YouTube. Their hopes are that using an open standard will allow developers to solve second screen playback issues in a better way than Apple's AirPlay. In other words, it wouldn't be a proprietary solution and would be available to anyone who wants to implement the protocol.

Google wants to make an open source AirPlay alternative

Turn your Mac or PC into an AirPlay device with AirServer

AirServer is a very simple Mac and PC app with a very useful purpose -- sharing your iPhone or iPad's screen to your computer with AirPlay mirroring. Once you install AirServer, your computer will appear in the list of devices available for AirPlay on your iPhone or iPad and when you select your computer, your iPhone or iPad's screen will pop up on your computer screen, just like it would on your television with Apple TV.
