Having second thoughts about iTunes 10.5 beat and wondering how to downgrade back to 10.3 on Windows? If you decided to take the plunge and try out the beta of iOS 5, you must also have upgraded your iTunes software to 10.5 beta. We have already covered how to downgrade your iPhone from iOS 5 to iOS 4.3.3 but what if you want to downgrade iTunes too? Well below is a guide to help you do just that.

A word of warning; before you start. This worked for me and should work for you too however there is always an element of risk, especially if you have a lot of content stored in iTunes. If you still want to go ahead and try it, read on after the break!

Download the latest full build of iTunes here

While that’s downloading, take an optional step to ensure your media is safe. Locate your iTunes folder which should be in C:\My Documents\My Music or C:\Users(your username)\Music in Windows 7. Copy the folder to another location just in case.

Open Control Panel, Programs and Features and uninstall the following entries:-

Apple Application Support

Apple Mobile Device Support

Apple Software Update

iTunes

Once all of them have been uninstalled, install and run CC Cleaner which will remove any registry entries associated with uninstalled programs. You can download it from here.

Now reboot your Windows PC

Once you are logged back in, go back to the location of your iTunes folder (Not the backup you made earlier) and find the file named iTunes Library.itl and rename it to iTunes Library.itl.old

Open the folder Previous iTunes Libraries and find the file with the latest date prior to upgrading to iTunes 10.5 beta. In my case it was iTunes Library 2011-06-10.itl

Copy the file and paste it into the root of the iTunes folder. When it has finished copying, rename it to iTunes Library.itl

Install the downloaded version of iTunes from step 1

That’s it, you should be done!

Now when fire up iTunes, you should have all of your media visible. If not, don’t panic! You can import all you media back in again by locating it in your iTunes folder. Hopefully this worked for you as well as it did for me. When you are happy that everything is working, you can delete the backup you made of the iTunes folder.

If any of our readers take the plunge and try this out, let us know how you get on in the comments. If you know of an easier method, again please let us know!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary.

Wondering how to downgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 4? Maybe you rushed out to test your app on the next big thing but now have to deal with a bug in the here and now version, and you don’t want to buy an additional device, or maybe you just don’t have what you need yet and you’d prefer to wait for a later beta. Either way, it is possible to go back to iOS 4. Last year we showed you how to downgrade from the beta version of iOS 4 as well. I am pleasantly surprised with how good the first beta version of iOS 5 is, but if for any reason you need to go back to iOS 4, we’ll show you a couple ways after the break!

I don’t recommend downgrading firmware unless you really need to. It can be a painful process that most people won’t like dealing with. But if you need to, it is completely possible.

Downgrade via XCode (Mac Only + dev license)

Downgrading via XCode is probably the easiest way to roll back to a previous version of iOS. The bad part is that it can sometimes put you into a never ending DFU loop. You can typically use iRecovery to kick you out of it.

Download the firmware version you’d like to downgrade to. For most people, this will probably be iOS 4.3.3 so simply find and download it via *iClarified*.

Open XCode and from the top select Window and then Organizer.

You should now see your device. Under software version, it will show you are on iOS 5. Choose to restore from Other Version.

You can then navigate to the iOS bundle you’d like to restore to that you downloaded and saved in step 1.

Let XCode do its thing. If you’re lucky, you’re done. If not, go to the next step. (aka if you get any error message or get thrown for a loop via DFU craziness.)

You’ll need to use a program like iRecovery which is linked above. I use Faster iRecovery as opposed to the original. Also, download the libusb files for Mac as well. iRecovery uses these.

Simply run iRecovery after you’d downloaded the libusb files and it should throw your phone out of recovery mode.

After this, simply restore in iTunes and you should be downgraded. The first time you may get an error, simply restore again like you normally would and it should downgrade successfully.

As a side note, PC users can also use iRecovery and libusb if they get stuck in a DFU loop.

Downgrade via iTunes beta with TinyUmbrella (Mac and PC)

You need iTunes 10.5 beta for this, which is also available via Apple’s dev portal (and maybe elsewhere if you scan the internet)

You also need TinyUmbrella

Mac download

PC download

This is the route PC users will have to take. Mac users may also choose to do it this way if they don’t have XCode or the SDK. Start this process with your device NOT connected to your computer.

Install iTunes 10.5 beta and TinyUmbrella

Then open TinyUmbrella and click on Advanced.

Uncheck the box that says Set Host to Cydia On Exit.

Restart your computer.

Now plug in your device and turn back on your computer.

After your computer restarts, you’ll need to go into iTunes. It may bring up error messages again. That’s okay. Just ignore them for now.

You’ll need to put your device into DFU mode. Refer to our DFU mode instructions if you’re not sure how to do this.

If you don’t do it correctly, just try again. When you get your device into DFU mode correctly, iTunes will pop up and tell you the device can’t be used until it is restored.

You can now restore your device like normal.

With Cydia currently not giving new users the ability to save their SHSH blobs it seemed like a good time to go over how to save your SHS blobs with an alternative, TinyUmbrella. An SHSH blob or ECID SHSH is basically a unique signature which is checked against Apple servers whenever you decide to restore the firmware on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Once a new firmware is released, Apple stops signing the older firmware, hence making it impossible to restore back to the older firmware from iTunes. So, YOU MUST SAVE YOUR SHSH WHILE APPLE IS CURRENTLY SIGNING THEM.

Now to “why is it important to save your SHSH blobs”: The creator of Cydia has setup a new server which basically mimics Apple’s verification server and can save your older signature (SHSH blob) so that you can downgrade or restore back to the older firmware. This is important because if you don’t have your SHSH blob saved, and accidently update to new firmware, you’ll loose your jailbreak and furthermore, you wont be able to downgrade back to older firmware to re-jailbreak your device.

Now while Cydia will probably once again start letting you save your SHSH blobs on the server automatically by using the “Make my life easier” button, a utility has been released which allows for both saving blobs on the server and locally and also for restoring older firmware via iTunes. You can also use TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH without being Jailbroken and for the currently signed firmware even if your iDevice is using a lower firmware.
You can download it here: TinyUmbrella
Look for version you need on right hand column.

Instructions for saving your SHSH

Download and run TinyUmbrella and make sure your iDevice is detected.

Check “Advanced Options.”

Under “Device / Version,” select the firmware version you want to Save (You can only restore to versions that have SHSH saved).

Click on “Save my SHSH.”

Repeat to save other firmware hashes if you wish.

Now, click on “Display SHSHs.” It should listed all hashes you have saved on your computer for all your iDevices.

Instructions for restoring:

(Make sure you have saved your SHSH blob locally using method above. If not, repeat the method above for the firmware you wish to restore to.)

Backup iDevice in iTunes and then close iTunes.

Open TinyUmbrella and make sure you dont get any errors on startup or else you will need to make sure that port 80 is open and that your host file is not set to Read-Only.

Click on Start “TSS server,”

Download firmware you wish to restore to from here: iPhone/iPodTouch

Open Itunes and use the Shift/Option + Restore method to choose the firmware file you wish to restore to (Upgrade button cannot be used)

After your firmware is restored you might get a 1004 error. Not to worry, simply click “Kick Device out of Recovery” if you get it.

Restore Settings from Backup in iTunes and sync.

Done! If you have any questions or need any help, head on over to our Jailbreak Forum.

Today we are going to cover how to successfully downgrade the iPhone from OS 4 beta (iPhone 4.0) back to iPhone 3.1.3. If you’re a small developer who installed the iPhone OS 4 beta then realized you had to troubleshoot problems for an existing app under 3.1, it can sometimes come down to this or having to quickly go shopping for a second iPhone or iPod touch. Luckily, downgrading can be done pretty easily a majority of the time, even though things sometimes go downhill, like DFU loops, errors, etc.. We will cover these scenarios right now and hopefully get a lot of people where they need to be. I’ll show you two ways to downgrade, through XCode (Mac only) and through iTunes (Mac and PC).

And as always, if you are even a little scared you may mess up your phone during this process, stop right now. What you do to your phone is always on you. These guides are there for your convenience, but we hold no responsibility for any bricked iDevices of any kind.

If that didn’t scare the pants off of you, hit the jump for screenshots, a written walk-through, and a video!

First of all, we need to differentiate between firmware and a baseband as a lot of people seem to get those confused. Firmware is the actual software your phone is running, which in most cases can be downgraded easily. A baseband however can NOT be downgraded as easy. This is part of what makes a phone unlockable (when the baseband is cracked).

Currently, iPhone firmware 3.1.3 and above can not be unlocked as the baseband version changed. So if you are trying to downgrade in order to get your unlock back, don’t bother with this process. Your baseband will currently remain at the 4.0 baseband. Even when you downgrade successfully, your baseband will remain the same, ruining your chances at having your unlock back.

What I’m getting at here is, do not downgrade in hopes of getting an unlock back. If you’ve installed 3.1.3 and higher, there is no unlock released. The only way you can unlock 3.1.3 is to have an older bootrom that was not upgraded (meaning you upgraded to 3.1.3 from a custom firmware ipsw, not the official 3.1.3).

XCode Downgrade

The easiest way to downgrade is going to be to go through XCode on a Mac. If you’re just going through XCode, simply choose 3.1.3 from your available firmwares, and voila, your phone will restore. If you are a licensed dev, you should have no problem going this route. No errors, nothing. You will not need the packages listed above (at least you shouldn’t). Open XCode and go to Organizer…

Then choose 3.1.3…

If you do get stuck in a DFU loop or get an error, jump down to the iTunes directions and continue from there (typically error 1015 or a DFU loop, which is where you need iRecovery – covered below and in video). I did not include an XCode walkthrough in the video as it’s extremely simple and painless if done correctly.

iTunes Downgrade (Mac and PC)

Even though I am covering a PC downgrade, you should NEVER ever install a beta OS through a PC. That is not the way they were meant to be installed. Betas should NEVER be installed through iTunes, always through XCode on a Mac. Especially with 4.0. The file system changed and iTunes will install the old way, creating crashes and all kinds of other nastiness. Even though I am giving instructions for PC downgrade, I have no way to test them, if there are issues, please let me know so I can correct them.

Alright, now on to what you’ll need to have beforehand -

Here is what you need to download to your computer (to your desktop is easiest):

libusb (Mac Versions, PC Package including iRecovery)

Faster iRecovery (Mac Version <– scroll all the way to bottom of page, there are 2 versions, this one’s easier)

iPhone firmware 3.1.3 (All versions, make sure you download the correct one for your phone model)

After you have downloaded the files above, install libusb and iRecovery (PC, you don’t install iRecovery, you run it through command prompt). Then plug in your iPhone. Open iTunes and hold down alt/option and click restore (ctrl click on a PC). Now navigate to where you saved your firmware like below (I have a folder on my desktop called iPhone firmwares).

Wait for your phone to go through the restore process (I would normally of told you to backup before doing any of this, but as 4.0 does not support backups yet, that isn’t possible. Hopefully you backed up your data before 4.0 so you can restore from that).

Your phone will not complete the downgrade, it will give you an error like below, that’s OK.

Next, open iRecovery. There are 2 versions of iRecovery. One you have to manually enter commands, the other, fast version is a button click. So for Mac users, open the faster iRecovery and click the button. iRecovery will reboot your phone and you “should” be done and able to sync and restore like normal through iTunes (you are done if you have a screen showing “Slide for Emergency”, if you still have “Connect to iTunes”, skip to the section titled “Still Stuck”). For PCs who need to enter commands into your command prompt, type the commands in this order:

iRecovery -s

satenv auto-boot true

saveenv

reboot (by holding home and power down until you see Apple logo – about 10 seconds)

If you are still stuck in DFU, continue, if you have “Slide for emergency” (below), you are done, sync like normal. “Connect to iTunes” (below) is bad, so continue on…

Here is what you don’t want (but may get)…

Still Stuck

When I decided to downgrade, my phone was stuck in a hopeless loop of DFU fail. I found a way around this with blackra1n.

First, download blackra1n to your computer. Launch it, and click “make it ra1n”. Wait about 30 seconds, your screen should be black but not off.

UNPLUG your phone and hard reboot it. When it comes back on, you should now have “Slide for Emergency” and be able to sync like normal. blackra1n will not jailbreak your phone, so if you want a Jailbreak, use Spirit afterwards (see my Spirit Jailbreak for iPhone 3.1.3 walkthrough). But it will get your phone out of DFU mode.

That’s it!

Just a side not: Anytime you restore you may have to repeat this process as a clean restore may still fail (at least until 4.0 official drops and you upgrade to that). Forcing your iPhone out of DFU mode can cause restores to act funky, so just save these steps for further reference. You should now be able to backup and sync like normal though.

Say you are having a hardware related issue on your iPhone, first place you would think to go is your local Apple store, right? Well not if you’re running iPhone

Say you are having a hardware related issue on your iPhone, first place you would think to go is your local Apple store, right? Well not if you’re running iPhone 3.0 Beta it turns out, as MacRumors forums show you will politely get rejected and denied any sort of help.

TiPb has confirmed this is indeed true from speaking with a few Apple employees.

Now where does that leave someone who purchased the beta from a stranger on Graigslist? Not in a good place obviously since to get your issue taken care of or to have your phone replaced you must call a developer-only help line. Now if you are a bit more expierienced with the iPhone you can always try to downgrade back to the 2.2.1 software before going into the Apple Store but say your home button is not working, you are flat out of luck and you are now stuck with a official iPhone paper weight.

So with all that said, TiPb can not stress enough — and we’ve said it many times — do not purchase the 3.0 Beta from anyone.

This late into the beta cycle, in a few short months it will be released to the public anyway.
