iOS 4 Ping social music network gallery

After a few hiccups, Ping, Apple's new social music network, is up and running on iOS 4 devices. Yesterday we took a quick look at how Ping worked in iTunes 10 and while computers have some advantages, I think I'm preferring it on iPhone right now.

Putting it in the iOS iTunes app is strange of course, until you realize Ping exists primarily to encourage people to buy more iTunes music, so having all those shopping carts handy is in Apple's best interests. I'm not convinced it's in mine, especially since load times in iTunes have never been as snappy as they feel in the dedicated Twitter or Facebook apps. And since the outer chrome has to include ways of moving to different iTunes store content, they can't be used to make navigating Ping any easier (not that there's much to navigate yet).

Lastly, while it still doesn't look like anyone but recording artists can share real status or post pics or video, we dull normals can share music, like activities, and comment on likes.

Apple's iOS Developer News is letting developers know how to set up Game Center achievements and leaderboard categories:

You can now set up metadata for your Game Center Achievements and Leaderboard Categories in iTunes Connect. Setting up these elements will allow you to test the full capabilities of Game Center for your app in the sandbox environment.

Apple announced Game Center way back in early April but instead of shipping it in June with iOS 4, they said it would be coming "later this year". The basic idea is to give "Xbox live" style social networking to iOS devices like iPhone and iPad.

Apple releases iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone, iOS 3.2.2 for iPad, kills Jailbreakme.com, PDF exploit

Apple has just released iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad which on the surface seem only to patch the zero day, in the wild PDF rendering exploit that enabled Jailbreakme.com, but could have also potentially allowed all manner of malware attacks against the iPhone Safari browser.

At a whopping 579.3 MB for iOS 4.0.2, it does seem like there should be something more substantial in the update -- proximity sensor fix anyone? -- but if there is, Apple isn't saying.

Kudos, however, for moving at what is for Apple security, lightning speed.

iOS 4 features: Background app killing

iOS 4's new fast app switcher interface also allows you to kill both Apple and 3rd party App Store apps that may be causing problems in the background.

To access the fast app switcher in iOS 4, double click the home button on iPhone 4 iPhone 3GS, or iPod touch G3. The interface will slide up and reveal a second dock-like set of app icons "in the background". To kill an app, tap and hold the app until the icons begin to jiggle, then tap the minus symbol (-) at the top left corner. The app will then disappear, "deleted" from the background dock (but not from your iPhone or iPod).

This force quiwill do a couple of different things depending on the type of app.

Apple generally holds an iPod event where they announce the new iPod family every September. However, the rumors are pointing towards a mid-August event this year instead.

Apple to patch Jailbreakme.com, PDF font exploit in upcoming software update

I think we all generally assumed this, but it's nice to see Apple going on record as saying they'll patch the PDF font exploit that currently allows Jailbreakme.com -- and potentially any malicious hacker out there -- to run code on an iPhone with just the tap of a web button. CNET scored the quote from an Apple spokeswoman:

"We're aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update."

Game Center will not support iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod touch?

Earlier today, Apple released iOS 4.1 beta 3 for developers. Included in this release is the removal of Game Center support for the iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod touch.
