Apple seeds iOS 5.1 beta 3 to developers

Apple has just seeded iOS 5.1 beta 3 to developers. If you're looking to get in the latest iOS beta and have a developers account, you can grab it via over-the-air (OTA) update or download from the developer site now.

The changelog hasn't fully been posted as of yet, so we're left wondering what all has changed but if you happen to spot anything -- by all means drop us a note in the comments and we'll update once we know some more.

Siri doubles iPhone 4S data consumption

According a report by network metrics firm Arieso, iPhone 4S users are consuming twice the amount of data than users of earlier iPhone models, and the reason is Siri. Siri is getting the blame for the huge increase in data consumption as it communicates with Apple’s servers to provide its personal assistant features.

iMessage bug prevents SMS from getting through to Android switchers

TechCrunch reports an iMessage bug causing problems for iOS users trying to send SMS messages to ex-iPhone users who have switched to another platform, such as Android.

What happens is, the iPhone attempts to send the SMS to the ex-iPhone user as an iMessage -- just like it always did before the recipient switched devices. But since Android doesn't support iMessage, the text ultimately fails.

Simple, if naive solution:

  1. Don't let your friends switch away from iPhones.

Timestamp security bug leaves your photos vulnerable under iOS 5

A newly discovered timestamp security bug may leave your iOS device photos exposed regardless of whether or not your device is passcode locked. Ade Barkah, a Canadian tech consultant, has figured out that changing the time on your device will leave any photo taken in the "future" accessible via the quick camera toggle on the home screen.

No Uninstall makes deleting apps from the Home screen impossible [Jailbreak]

No Uninstall is a A jailbreak mod in Cydia that prevents 3rd party apps from being deleted from the Home screen on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

This tweak removes the "X" when uninstalling an iPhone app. Good for pranking your friends and preventing accidental app removal.

Why Facebook and other apps sometimes say "Cleaning..."

With iOS 5 it's not uncommon to sometimes see the label under many apps, including Facebook, sometimes change to read "Cleaning..." This is a feature of iOS 5 that Apple hasn't really explained, so it's caused a lot of you to write in an ask about it. Here's the deal...

Basically, that's iOS 5 deleting cache and temporary files so that when iCloud or iTunes does a backup of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, that backup is smaller and faster.
