Adobe is adding support for Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming technology to Adobe Flash Media Server, which means live web video using that platform will soon be compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Currently this type of live video is only available via Flash plugin, which is still inching its way towards mobile, and which Apple is still not interested in for their devices.

By offering HTTP Live Streaming on the server side, no Flash plugin (or any other type of plugin) is required for iOS — it just detects Safari or the embedded web view and serves the supported H.264 format. (Which sounds similar to what Microsoft did for SilverLight video almost a year and a half ago.)

Video demo of HTTP Live Streaming to iPad, after the break…

[Adobe, thanks Anthony!]

Cult of Mac claims a source has told them Apple is live streaming today’s special music event as a way to test their massive new, North Carolina data center, set to go fully operational later this year.

Apple’s first live video broadcast in years is a test of the server farm’s ability to stream a future version of iTunes for iOS devices, our tipster says.

“The goal is to monitor traffic load and quality,” says our tipster, who asked to remain anonymous to preserve their connections at Apple.

Apple product events are the Oscars or Superbowls of the Internet, with traffic numbers high enough to take down the biggest sites, and sometimes entire data centers (plural). So if they’re going to test something as bandwidth intensive as video, does it make sense to test it under the harshest conditions imaginable?

Either way, we’ll find out soon enough how it holds up. Hey, why not watch along with us?

Throwing caution — and bandwidth! — to the wind, Apple has just announced that tomorrow, for the first time in recent memory, they’ll be live streaming one of their keynote events:

Apple® will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com.

No word on Windows, Linux, Android, webOS, or any other kind of compatibility, so have your Apple gear ready. TiPb will be following along and providing our usual commentary and color so if you plan on watching, come watch along with us.

‘Tis the season for last minute, high-profile, pre-holiday App Store approvals it seems, as the long-awaited Qik, now dubbed Qik Live [Free - iTunes link] has finally hit the iPhone!

I’ve been lucky enough to have an ad-hoc version for a while now, and it’s always worked very, very well, so here’s to Apple and AT&T loosening the 3G chains and letting iPhone users do what Nokia N95 users have been doing for years now — broadcast live from their iPhones!

If you try it out, say to live stream the grandkids opening their new iPod touch presents, let us know how it works for you!

UPDATE: Yes, Ustream Live Broadcast is iPhone 3G compatible, and you can use it to record video from the iPhone 3G (no Jailbreak for Cycorder required!). If you’re trying it out on a 3G, let us know how it works for you!

ORIGINAL: Ustream Live Broadcaster [Free - iTunes link] for iPhone has arrived, enabling users to point their iPhone cameras and instantly share whatever they’re looking at with internet viewers everywhere (terms of service appropriate, thankfully).

It’s been a long, slow road getting live video up-streaming onto the iPhone, with Ustream in specific releasing a limited viewer-only app first, then a record-now-upload-later app. Does this mean the gates are open for yet another previously unavailable category? We’ll see. And while we’re happy with video, we’re still waiting for VoIP over 3G as well.

Meanwhile, we’re bracing ourselves for the flood of “Come see me live” posts to flood our Twitter feeds. So just do us a favor and point that iPhone camera at something interesting, will ya?

No doubt they’re using some magic behind the scenes to transform the Flash-bound web content into racy H.264 for the iPhone, similar to how other video platforms have adapted. With it, you can watch featured shows and popular live shows, and view, search, and chat with live friends and users. It also supports both portrait and landscape mode.

Chief TWiT Leo Laporte just streamed live from his iPhone via the official (non-Jailbreak) version of the Qik App, which he says should be available in the App Store soon.

All the rage last year in the blogsphere, many iPhone users were stuck carrying around a Nokia 95 just for Qik live streaming. Perhaps, no longer!

Check out the recording to get an idea of the quality. Looks like it doesn’t handle motion very well, but is otherwise fairly decent. Still, we have to wonder, what will this do to AT&T’s “rabbit ear” 3G network?

Either way, we can’t wait for this App to drop!

Yup, Kevin Rose is back, back again, this time with a sneak peak at Qik for the iPhone, the online video broadcasting App that everyone and their Twitter-feed was “going live” with on the Nokia N95 last year.

Not a jailbreak, but a real honest-to-Steveness App Store application, Kevin says it will be available soon. We say… will Apple approve it? And if they do, what will it say having internet broadcast video capability on a device that still lacks support for local video recording?

Who knows? As Dieter points out, Apple’s cagey approval/rejection process is still incomprehensible.

Qik looks to be One Sweet App, however, and we can’t wait for it to “go live.” Can you?
