Sprint iPhone 4S review: Unlimited, kind of, sort of

That, above, is a Sprint iPhone 4S. Physically, it's the exact same iPhone 4S you can get on Verizon. Or AT&T. Or Rogers, O2, KDDI, Vodacom, or any other carrier that sells the iPhone 4S anywhere in the world. Apple makes one iPhone 4S (okay, technically six, when you include the storage variations and colors). But this one runs on Sprint. There's no user-facing software difference - it's an iPhone 4S inside and out.

So here we are, three months after the biggest network load freight train in history smacked into Sprint's network. CEO Dan Hesse was begging for it. Literally, he really wanted the iPhone. After the long-term sales disappointment that was the Palm Pre (rest in peace, shiny webOS pebble) and the failure of the Android-powered HTC Evo 4G to really take the market by storm, Sprint found themselves really needing the iPhone, and publicly proclaiming such.

With three months of more-and-more users switching to the iPhone on Sprint (including myself, I know at least seven webOS, BlackBerry, and Android users on Sprint that picked up a Sprint iPhone), it's time to check in and see just how well the pin drop network is holding up. And the answer is… quiet well.

Sprint says no to throttling, still offering "true" unlimited data

After Dow Jones misconstrued some comments by Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, Sprint has come out with an official statement saying they do not throttle regular subscribers under their unlimited data plans.

Reports that Sprint throttles the top one percent of data users are false. Here are the facts:

  • Sprint does not throttle any postpaid phone data users for on-network or off-network usage. Sprint is the only national carrier offering smartphone users truly unlimited data with no throttling, metering or overages while on the Sprint network.

Sprint CEO: We throttle top 1 percent of data users [UPDATE]

"For those that want to abuse it, we can knock them off," Hesse said at an investor conference Thursday. He said Sprint pares back data use for about 1% of users, a practice known as throttling.

Poll: U.S. iPhone 4S owners -- which carrier are you on?

Gone are the days when AT&T and AT&T alone was so blessed as to have exclusive access to Apple's iPhone. Now you can, if you so choose, have your iPhone 4S on Verizon or Sprint, a regional carrier like C-Spirt, or even run it unlocked on T-Mobile.

AT&T still offers the fastest data speeds, with HSPA 14.4. Verizon claims the best network coverage. Sprint is the only major carrier still offering unlimited data to new iPhone owners. C-Spire is the only small carrier to pick up the iPhone 4S to date. T-Mobile... you have to work for it and it's EDGE only, but that means you must really love them to stick with them!

U.S. Cellular says no to iPhone 4S, quarterly sales estimates say YES!

According to a report by Fierce Wireless, U.S. Cellular apparently turned down the opportunity to carry Apple's new iPhone 4S:

U.S. Cellular turned down Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone because it did not make sense for the company economically, CEO Mary Dillon said on the company's third-quarter earnings conference call. Dillon said that the carrier had the opportunity to sell the iPhone but that Apple's "terms were unacceptable from a risk and profitability standpoint."
