There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything -- so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb's new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, Sam asks:

I'm looking for an app that can pause recording video (like Android) for my iPad 2. Do you know of anything?

To see what we found for Sam, follow along after the break!

MovieCam [$2.99 - App Store link] claims to be the most powerful camcorder for the iPad 2. It comes loaded with 9 different effect presets and has recording options for DVD or HD quality. Additionally, MovieCam allows you pause video recording and continue it later - exactly what Sam is looking for!

Honorable mention: Camera Plus Pro [$1.99 - App Store link] is an iPhone app packed with all kinds of photography features, including the ability to pause video recording. However, since it's not a universal app, Sam will need to hit the 2x button on his iPad. This isn't the most elegant of solutions, but if he also has an iPhone, this may be an economical way for Sam to get the feature he's looking for on both devices.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Sam? Let him -- and all of us -- know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Send us an email to iosapps@tipb.com and let us know what you're looking for, and we'll do our best to find you just the right App for That!

Capture puts an icon on your iPhone, iPod touch 4, or iPad 2 home screen and, when tapped, immediately fires up your video camera and records. How many times have you missed something you wanted to shoot, waiting to load the camera app, toggling it into video mode and then pressing the record button? This happens to me all the time and is very frustrating.

Never miss another moment! Capture is like a record button for your home screen. It immediately starts recording video after launched, and saves the video to your Camera Roll after it quits.

Features:

Minimal UI

Start/stop recording

Focus on tap

Rear light toggle

Double-tap zoom to view full frame

Lock orientation (in Settings)

Disable record-on-launch (in Settings)

I will definitely be buying Capture today; I'm sick of missing my little girls crazy antics while the camera app loads up!

When Steve Jobs announced 720p, 30fps video recording on the iPhone 4 during the WWDC 2010 keynote, the first thing that popped into my head was: "Wow, now I don't have any use for my Flip MinoHD video camera!" I have since then done some thinking and researching about this very topic to determine if this is really case.

In order for the iPhone 4 to replace my Flip, it must do close to everything just as well as the Flip. By everything, I mean video and audio quality, storage capacity, battery life, portability, convenience, and ease of use. Let's take a look after the break.

Ease of use and convenience

Both the iPhone and Flip are very portable and easy to use. However, even though the Flip is small, it would be much more convenient to carry only an iPhone with me.

Lens quality

In the same category as video quality, we must also consider the lenses of both these devices. The Flip offers a fixed focus of 1.5m to infinity, f/2.4 aperture, and 2x digital zoom. Unfortunately, Apple hasn't provided us with the specifications of the lens on the iPhone 4. However, we do know that the tap to focus feature will be available when recording video. This is a huge advantage over the Flip because it allows for creativity. Apple has said that 5x digital zoom is available when taking photos, but it does not seem as though this feature is available when recording video.

Audio quality

One thing the Flip has been praised for is its sound quality. Quiet voices and sounds are easily picked up by the Flip and boosting volume in post editing is rarely a necessity. Will the iPhone 4 offer the same? I suspect it will be efficient enough. It may not be quite as good as the Flip, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make in order to carry one less device in my purse.

Storage capacity

The most storage available on the iPhone 4 is 32 GB and Flip's newest camera, the SlideHD, is available in 16 GB, which is approximately 4 hours of video. Even though the iPhone has more available space, it is safe to say that there is never a time when all 32 gigabytes are free to use. Basically, storage space is going to vary by user; for me, I have about 16 GB of free space on my iPhone now, so the two devices are comparable.

Battery life

But what about battery? Flip claims to get 2 hours of battery life between charges. Once again, Apple has not provided us with this information. However, I remember that Dieter, our Editor in Chief, let his iPhone 3GS record video for about an hour during an iPhone live! episode and had battery life to spare. With the bigger battery in the iPhone 4, I expect to be able to record video for about 2 hours as well. However, draining the battery on the Flip is better than on the iPhone because it only renders the video camera useless, not an entire phone.

On-device editing

The last thing I want to mention is editing. The Flip does not offer any way of editing on the device itself. It does come with free software for your computer, but it's clunky to say the least. With the iPhone, I can trim clips immediately after capturing footage and for under $5, I should be able to do some impressive editing with the upcoming iMovie for iPhone. I can then upload my finished project directly to YouTube. The ability to do this all with my iPhone is very impressive and a compelling argument to ditch the Flip. (No word yet on whether or not iPhone 4 will support the Camera Kit USB reader that shipped alongside the iPad, but that would certainly be even more interesting...)

Conclusion

So what's the verdict? Will the iPhone 4 replace my Flip MinoHD? My answer is: usually. For day to day use of capturing quick memories of my dogs (and soon, my child) and other random instances, the iPhone 4 will easily replace my Flip and I look forward to removing the Flip from my purse. However, if I know I'm going to capture a lot of footage, I will make sure my Flip is with me so that I don't waste precious battery life on my iPhone. Also, if I'm planning to make a nicely edited video, I will use the Flip because of the 16:9 aspect ratio (unless and until Apple proves 16:9 on the iPhone 4).

Once the iPhone 4 is in my hand, I will be putting the unknowns (battery life, audio quality, lens quality) to the test and perform side-by-side comparisons. In the meantime, I can only base my conclusion on the facts we know and dream about about what video recording on the iPhone 4 will really be like.

What about you? Do you expect the iPhone 4 to replace your Flip video camera (or similar device)? Why or why not?

Qik Video Camera for the iPhone, from Qik [$0.99 - iTunes Link] finally brings 15 frames per second video recording to the iPhone 3G. It also supports zoom, has some fun filters, and adds an easy system for sending your videos via e mail.

For the complete rundown, and pictures of Qik VideoCamera's effects, stay with us after the break.

As mentioned above, Qik VideoCamera lets the iPhone 3G shoot video at 15 frames per second (FPS) but that's only when using the default size. It's basically a trade off. Qik gives you the option of having low video resolution (200x152) and high FPS or high video resolution (400x304) and lower FPS. I usually go for the low video resolution and higher FPS because if the frames are too few the video is too choppy to appreciate.

Qik video has some really fun special effect filters to play with. Like with video quality, however, when you start using a special effect filter the frame rate slows down. Here are some examples of how they look.

Black and White.

Black white and red, which makes any red object show in color and everything else in black and white. While interesting, aside from the novelty I don't see many real life applications.

As requested here is some video taken using the black, white and red effect with a resolution of 200x152.

Color game, which inverses blue and red (I call it the Avatar effect!)

There are two mirror effects, both vertical and horizontal. These are good for making object suddenly disappear. It can be a lot of fun for the little ones to play with, if you would trust your little one with an iPhone.

Zoom is another nice feature, though I have found that for shooting anything very close it can cause blurring.

One of the other useful additions to this application is the audio and light enhancing controls. Since the iPhone has no external lighting source (plz 4.0!) the addition of brightness control can make those precious moments easier to see in low light settings. The audio boost helps increase the audio track but I usually don't realize that something is going to be too soft until the event has already occurred.

Qik VideoCamera also allows you to email your videos easily, by choosing which video to email and typing in the email address. The program is also linked to your contacts so you dont have to worry if you have forgotten the address.

All in all, Qik VideoCamera is a very nice app and has a lot of useful and fun effects for saving your life's special moments. It's not the same resolution or frame rate as the iPhone 3GS' built-in video recorder, but for iPhone 3G users who didn't get that feature, it's currently the next best thing.

Here is some video without any effects, taken with a resolution of 400x304.

Take on OWLE team, add a hack into the iPhone dock connector, and what do you get? According to TechCrunch:

The latest prototype that OWLE has developed, which is different than what they start shipping tomorrow, allows you to use lenses with depth of field and telephoto effects, XLR microphones (both wired and wireless microphones), stereo microphones and more. Basically, it allows you to plug in any professional audio equipment that filmmakers use, on your iPhone. The mics are plugged in through the 30 pin, and the telephoto lens was cobbled together.

RED likely need not be fearful... yet!

Lots of smartphones have lots of features, and as Steve Jobs has said in the past -- many people don't even know about them, much less use them.

With the original iPhone, Apple popularized mobile web browsing, and the iPhone 3G too that to previously unseen levels (and AT&T has the data network woes to prove it). The App Store made getting and using mobile applications so ridiculously easy that 50,000 now fill the store and over 1 billion have been downloaded.

So now Apple is set to take on mobile video.

Like previous efforts, mobile video isn't new. Many smartphones have been able to shoot video for many years. Likewise, the Flip Mino and similar pocket video camera have become media darlings. But as with most things Apple, the iPhone 3G S is set to make shooting, editing, and sharing videos not only more convenient, but easier and likely more popular than ever.

Think about it: the video camera will be with you everywhere you have a phone. It will be constantly connected. And it will be integrated with not only MMS and MobileMe, but with the 800lbs gorilla of video -- YouTube.

Hey, dad, here's your son making that soccer goal 5 min ago. Hey, sis, here's Steve Jobs totally ordering a smoothy at Whole Foods! Hey, air force, here's that flying saucer that keeps buzzing my cattle ranch!

Tweetie, the uber-popular iPhone Twitter application, has a big desktop brother called Tweetie for Mac that's just been updated to version 2.1 and one of the cool new features is support for adding video via the yfrog service (which previously handled static pictures).

iPhone 3.0 contains code that pretty much confirms we'll be seeing video recording, editing, and sharing if not in the iPhone 3G then certainly in the next-generation iPhone expected to be announced on June 8 at WWDC 2009.

Put these two together and what do you get? The potential for not only a pocket video explosion, but a pocket video micro-publishing explosion as well.

A 4K (2160p) RED ONE camera might be drool-worthy, but even most pros won't have it with them 24x7 when they chance upon that one great serendipitous moment. They might just have a video-enabled iPhone, however.

Likewise, sharing that video via MMS, email, or MobileMe, even YouTube is okay to great, but to immediately be able to push it out to all your Twitter followers? (Which suffers not the walled garden of Facebook).

Yeah, we live in interesting times!

(via @atebits and @llofte)

Double confirmed now? And will it require that next gen iPhone hardware?

MacRumors has scored the scoop, showcasing what looks to be actual screen-shot caliber evidence of video recording in iPhone 3.0, and other information showing digital compass technology and voice control coming as well.

Most of these rumors have been around for a while, especially the camera and video recording bumps. A digital compass, like the Android G1 uses to automatically rotate Google Street View when you physically turn the device around, would likely require the next gen iPhone hardware pretty much everyone expects to see come WWDC in June anway. Voice control, especially voice dialing, would be another box checked off the old "missing features" straw-man we -- and everyone else -- likes to batter about.

With lots of exciting new features still being "discovered", what other goodies will 3.0 code diving reveal?

When iPhone 3.0 Beta 1 was released, we saw what looked to be an errant video upload screen. Next it was the apparent ability to receive video MMS. Now more deep diving into the 3.0 beta has turned up resource files that show not only may the next generation iPhone allow not only video recording, but perhaps video editing, including trimming as well. This might be similar to the already surfaced Voice Memo app's ability to trim audio recordings on device.

Would make a nice addition to that rumored 3.5 or 5 megapixel camera, enhanced CPU and GPU, and fast cell and WiFi networking, wouldn't it?

Welcome to iPhone Analysts vs. the Magic 8-Ball, where we take the often outlandish, sometime surreal predictions of iPhone analysts and pundits, blogeratti and the ‘net elite, and compare them to the potentially equally precise prognostications of a… magic 8-ball (running on an iPhone, of course!)

Mike Abramsky, seasoned veteran of of RBC weighs in on an iPhone 3G "Pro" with the following specs, and the Magic 8-Ball chimes in with its pedictions in italics:

iPhone 3G "Pro" nickname. As I see it, yes

Retail price to stay the same $199/$299. My reply is no

Wireless UMTS/HSUPA, Wifi, Bluetooth. My reply is no
(Note: our understanding is that HSUPA is to uplink what HSPDA is to downlink, and someone's mixing up their UMTS technologies there and really means a 3.5G system)

3.2MP camera with flash and video recording. Don't count on it.

16GB/32GB storage. Most likely

0.1" thinner. Yes

AT&T to get it before the rest of the world. Most likely.

Growth will not accelerate. Don't count on it.

Okay, so both of their predictions seem a little hinkey to us, but what do we know? Bring on WWDC 2009, and until then, thanks everyone for playing Analyst vs. Magic 8-Ball and be sure to leave your predictions, and your thoughts on their predictions, in the comments!

As Dieter would say, "cats and dogs living together!". That's how it feels these last few days, what with all the leaks/rumors hitting about next generation iPhone stuff. Are they legit, or part of some mass internet meme-teria? Dunno. But I'm running out of puzzle metaphors!

This time, Apple Insider is reporting that the next generation iPhone hardware will not only provide video recording, but through a higher quality camera to boot! Want more? They're further rumoring that Apple will build in a Movie Recorder app, the video equivalent to the Memo Recorder for audio that already part of the iPhone OS 3.0 beta.

So this brings our list of leaks for the week to: code references for iPhone 2,1 and 3,1, multi-core GPUs, video publishing, OLED screen, faster internet speeds, and now higher def video recording...

Curiouser and curiouser...

Go to Photos. Choose a photo. Tap the action button. Choose "Send to Mobile Me" and a screen slides up labeled... Publish Video? Hard to believe that's a simple typo, or even a bald-faced trick. But if it isn't, is it a sign the Video Recording -- One of the features still missing in action following this week's iPhone 3.0 Preview Event -- may be coming to the iPhone come "summer"?

We can't believe Hollywood would ever let us publish their videos, so what else does that leave us? And if Video Recording is coming, will that also be available for iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G owners, or can we speculate that Apple maybe didn't announce it yet because it will be exclusive to a next generation iPhone (with a better camera and supporting architecture?) set for release around the same time?
