Great news! I can confirm that the latest and greatest 2018 9.7-inch iPad is exactly the same size and weight as the 2017 9.7-inch iPad, so there will be no issues with trading cases, buying up, or getting your older brother's hand-me-downs.

The 2018 iPad, available in silver, gold, and space gray is the same, down to the millimeter and gram, as it's predecessor.

2018 9.7-inch iPad size and weight measurements:

Wi-Fi

  • Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
  • Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm)
  • Depth: 0.29 inch (7.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.03 pounds (469 g)

Wi-Fi + Cellular

  • Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
  • Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm)
  • Depth: 0.29 inch (7.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.05 pounds (478 g)

2017 9.7-inch iPad size and weight measurements:

Wi-Fi

  • Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
  • Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm)
  • Depth: 0.29 inch (7.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.03 pounds (469 g)

Wi-Fi + Cellular

  • Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
  • Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm)
  • Depth: 0.29 inch (7.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.05 pounds (478 g)

How about iPad Air 2 cases? Do those fit?

iPad Air 2 is nearly identical in size to the 9.7-inch iPad with a slight difference in depth. We're talking just over a millimeter's difference.

But just over a millimeter can make a difference when you're trying to stuff the 9.7-inch iPad into a hardshell iPad Air 2 case.

These older cases will probably fit, but be aware of the very slight differences in depth before you decide to buy a case that was specifically designed for the iPad Air 2.

iPad Air 2 size and weight measurements:

Wi-Fi

  • Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
  • Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm)
  • Depth: 0.24 inch (6.1 mm)
  • Weight: 0.96 pound (437 g)

Wi-Fi + Cellular

  • Height: 9.4 inches (240 mm)
  • Width: 6.6 inches (169.5 mm)
  • Depth: 0.24 inch (6.1 mm)
  • Weight: 0.98 pound (444 g)

So there you go. Your new 9.7-inch iPad will fit your old 9.7-inch iPad case perfectly (or your old iPad will fit with new cases)! Your old iPad Air 2 case will probably fit, but if it's a ridged hardshell case, it might be a little too snug.

Here's a list of the best cases for the 9.7-inch iPad in 2018!

  • These are also the same dimensions as the original iPad Air so I assume a case from that will also fit?
  • The iPad Air is actually a very slight bit different than the 9.7-inch iPad, so tight fitting or inflexible cases might not fit. Most of them will be OK, but be aware.
