How to take a picture using Siri

Taking a picture with the built-in Camera app is easy as pie. But, did you know that Siri can help get things started? The digital assistant can even help you take a Selfie (for reals this time). All you have to do is know what to ask.

How to take a picture

You can ask Siri to open the Camera app to one of the three available photo options.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on your iPhone or iPad to launch Siri or say, "Hey Siri."
  2. Say, Take a picture, Take a square picture, or Take a panoramic picture. The Camera app will open to the setting you asked for.
  3. Take a picture.

How to take a video

You can ask Siri to open the Camera app to one of the three available video options.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on your iPhone or iPad to launch Siri or say, "Hey Siri."
  2. Say, Take a video, Take a slow motion video, or Take a Time-Lapse video. The Camera app will open to the setting you asked for.
  3. Record a video.

How to take a selfie

As of iOS 10, Siri will actually open the front-facing camera so you can take a Selfie.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on your iPhone or iPad to launch Siri or say, "Hey Siri."
  2. Say, Take a selfie. The Camera app will open to the front FaceTime camera.
  3. Record a video or take a photo of your beautiful, smiling face.

What Siri can't do with the Camera app

There are a couple of things your Camera app can do that Siri has not yet figured out, like trigger the flash, enable Live Photos, set a timer, or turn on HDR photos. Siri also can't turn on Live Filters, lock AutoFocus, zoom in, turn the viewfinder grid on or off, or change the video quality. But hey, it's a start.

Any questions?

Are there any other activities you wonder if Siri can do with the Camera app? Let us know in the comments.

  • But it doesn't actually take a picture (or selfie, or video), does it? It just opens the camera app.
  • Yeah. It sets up the appropriate camera after opening the app but that's all
  • It'd be nifty if Siri could manage to take pics using voice commands. I think LG phones take a selfie if you say "cheese"
  • That would be awesome! Sent from the iMore App
  • Samsung as well when you enable it. Sent from the iMore App
  • Then why does the headline (and many times throughout the post) state "how to take..." when you actually can't? :/
  • it doesn't take anything, just helps to open up camera app on right screen like selfie, video shooting screen etc. by the way good idea than before we did.
  • Can it make the person in the photo smile, too?
  • Right? Why so serious?
  • Look at how to take a video: hey siri take a slo motion video. next picture, ITS IN TIME LAPSE! CRITICAL FAILURE!!!
  • but where will photo's be saved?? siri captured the pic but i cant find it anywhere.. totally confused
