iOS 4.3 beta for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV now available for developers

Apple has just released iOS 4.3 beta for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad... and Apple TV. Nice to see the whole product line being kept unified. iOS 4.3 has been rumored to ship in March, so it makes sense to get it out to developers now.

And hey, is everyone getting Personal Hotspot now?

  • New features: Test Multi-Touch Gestures for iPad
This beta release contains a preview of new Multi-Touch gestures for iPad. You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. We are providing this preview before releasing them to the public to understand how these gestures work with your apps. Test them and give us your feedback on the Apple Developer Forums."
So we're getting some new wibbly wobbly gestures? Too bad they won't change the orientation lock back to the way it used to work. Still, these new gestures make a lot of sense for Apple's tablet and its touch-centric interface.
A new version of Xcode (Preview 6 beta) was also released to support the beta iOS build and adds Airplay and Apple TV services (not apps on Apple TV -- yet) for apps. Specifically:
"AirPlay Video support is now available as an option for developers in the MPMoviePlayerController class. It is also available to web authors via the QuickTime Plug-In or media element."
  • Seems like they're removing buttons.
  • Apparently, they DID change the orientation lock functionality for all you iPad users! ;) It seems that now you can set yourself if the switch serves as orientation lock or mute switch. See: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11714118&postcount=58
  • Anybody know if we can now lock the iPhone orientation in portrait or landscape?
  • Wish I was a developer. Seems like the time line is a little early. Let us know if any bug fixes.
  • No support for 2g iPod Touch and 3g iPhone.
  • No surprise there.
  • No surprise? The iPhone 3G got iOS 4.2.1, right? Then it's a bit of a surprise if it wouldn't get 4.3 as well. But the Beta for the 3G is probably just coming a bit later or something..
  • Time to upgrade. Guess iPod touch 3g will have limited features. What about iPhone 3gS?
  • iPhone 3Gs is part of the beta.
  • great news. now maybe we'll start to see movement in the Comex bullpen again
  • Any chance of getting a usable version of AirPrint that will allowing printing to ALL printers, not just HP wireless ones?
AirPlay question for the group - I know you can AirPlay from your computer's iTunes Library, iPhone, or iPad to an AirPort Express or AppleTV. However, does anyone know if you can AirPlay from your computer's iTunes Library to an iPhone/iPad on the same Wi-Fi network?
  • Sort of. You can control your computer's iTunes Library from your iPhone via the "Apple Remote" App and your home Wifi network; but the sound and/or video still are displayed on whatever devices are connected to your computer; and not your iPhone. Your iPhone does however give you complete access to the playlist data, album art (displayed on your phone), and all the rest.
I don't think you can Airplay using the iPhones speakers or headphones content from your computer, if that's what you were asking. Maybe via some Jailbreak app?
  • You can download the app airfoil speakers, and the app for the mac. And achieve this. can't remember the cost. It is from http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/
  • Hotspot seems to be included for the GSM iPhones. See: http://twitter.com/thejamesfoley/status/25301776009793538
I wonder if those iPad gestures will find their way onto the iPhone..
  • The iPad switch can now be changed in Settings!!!
  • I just finished installing iOS 4.3 on my iPhone 4 .. hotspot is awesome. Now i am not going to need MiFi for my iPad.
  • What carrier are you on that already allows the use of Mobile Hotspot?
  • Thank you for the non Verizon iPhone story!!!
This one was good and exciting and I enjoyed something new!
I hope iPhone os gets some multitouch and possibly landscape mode support???
  • wow, 4.3 seems like a fairly significant little update...
  • Next iPhone with no home button
  • I have just upgraded to ios 4.3 and have no multi touch gesture option..
  • .. it would be a huge upgrade for iOS devices if apple decides to change the iOS UI. The homescreen needs a revamp. Android and WinPhone7 have better UI display.
  • "Great article, I’ve bookmarked this page and have a feeling I’ll be returning to it regularly."
