Redesigned Google Maps rolling out now to iPhones and iPads

Yesterday we told you about a big overhaul coming to Google Maps, and today that overhaul has arrived. The Google Maps app for iPhone and iPad has been bumped up to version 4.0, bringing a whole new "Material Design" look to the mapping, search, and navigation app.

In addition to the new look, which features a lot of bright colors and a flatter design, the Google Maps update is also bringing integration with OpenTable for finding restaurants and making reservations at said restaurants, and integration with Uber that will allow you to estimate the wait time and fare for a ride with the private car service.

By and large Google Maps still works the same way on iOS and Android, it just has a nice new design, optimizations for iOS, and proper support for the bigger screens of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Check it out and let us know what you think of the new look.

  • Looks great on my iPhone 6!
  • Looks awesome on my 6 plus. I'm obviously an apple guy but people please stop saying Apple maps is better I live in Los Angeles, one of the best cities to put these two to the test. And i have to say, Google maps is better all around. Just wish they had the night view mode. Sent from the iMore App
  • Looks great. I'm really digging Google apps on iOS Sent from the iMore App
  • Google? Ewwwwwwwwwwww. Apple Maps is good enough now. Posted via the iMore App for Android
  • If Apple had an "avoiding tolls" option, Google would be an afterthought.
  • Same. Sent from the iMore App
  • Unless you need good real time traffic. I do and Apple traffic is almost nonexistent where I live. Full accurate street level traffic on Google maps. WTF Apple???
  • Apple's maps have my condo in the wrong location and it was built in the 90s.
  • It's not downloading on my iPhone 6 device it says purchase not available what should I do to fix this I rebooted my device closed everything before rebooting but still won't download Sent from the iMore App
  • One quibble with the new update...moving the controls to the lower right puts it *just* out of comfortable one-handed reach on my 6+ Sent from the iMore App
  • This app will still not download Sent from the iMore App
  • I just took the new Google Maps for a spin, and I am quite pleased with it. I'll admit, I haven't been much of a G Maps user this year, so I'm not really sure what was updated throughout the months. I think the UI is way better. I can now easily manage my offline maps and they are also labeled nicely now. Another cool thing is while driving, it will show you the time impact if you decided not to take a certain turn before you even decide to make a turn! That's awesome! I'm a fan and may start using this more now.
  • Any word if the Gmail app will also get an update like the Android version is getting? Sent from the iMore App
  • Let's hope, because the new Android version is awesome.
  • It´s reasonable to assume that it will get the update. The Calendar app is also going over to iOS.
  • Tested it out the public transit routing. To get to the bus stop 3 blocks away, it suggested I walk 800 m, and then drive for 1 min. Oh yeah? Sent from the iMore App
  • Meh, Apple Maps is still better.
  • If it would just switch to nighttime colors for navigation... Sent from the iMore App
  • Did you try the navigation at night? On the Android app, it switches to the night theme automatically, well, during the night. There is no way to control it. There was one instance at night where I wanted to revert back to the day theme, and couldn't. I assume the app is subject to the time of day.
  • Awesome. Google maps is still much more detailed for my area compared to apple maps...
