Finally went to the AT&T store in NYC to get my 3G, but unfortunately all NYC stores are out and they're only taking pre-orders. I will have to wait at least 10 days for the next shipment, but at least I have a guaranteed iPhone on the way...still bummed about the wait, though (I need my own Wait-a-thon!!)!

Apple should have shipped at least 10 million iPhones to stores worldwide for launch day and 10 million per week thereafter. Nokia sells 10 million phones per week.

One million units is indeed a log, but they likely could've easily sold two million (or more) in the very first three days if they'd been prepared. Most AT&T store managers felt that Apple WOULD be prepared to fulfill the majority of the orders. Did Apple have manufacturing/production issues? Was there a shortage of parts? Even now, they are struggling to even keep up with direct-fulfillment orders. In the end, this will cause many iPhone-wanters to jump ship and go for one of the competitors phones.

I am quite surprised that the 3G edition of iPhone still seems so premature in features, due to extremely tight restrictions. I mean, it should be the ultimate portable "i-device", but I cant multitask in between email and browser (quite handy if you need some info from emails while working with the browser) or have an instant messaging client running.

I am seriously considering buying, but after reading this interesting FAQ, I think I will have to pass...or is there a way around these issues?

@skip. They're sold out at the stores. What they'll do is take your money and have one shipped to the store for activation when it arrives. That will take 7-10 days. I doubt that you'll see one available in inventory for walk up customers for a while because they've been taking orders from customers from early Friday morning (let's say at about 9AM Eastern) through today.

+1. After waiting in line in Apex, NC for an iPhone on Friday the staff at the AT&T store said that they were taking orders for deliveries to the store in 7-10 days. I figured I had time to do this at any point in time so I bought my 16GB iPhone today. Now I'll be counting the days until I get the call from the store but at least I know it's on the way.

What about us "old" iPhone folks? Is it safe to try the 2.0 upgrade yet? I don't want to try until I hear that all the server problems, etc. are fixed and I won't need to spend a day upgrading my phone. I just want the update process to go smooth. Is it ok to do so now....or is waiting still recommended?
