Disclaimer – Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing.

A few days back we brought you a simple guide to jailbreak your iPhone with firmware 2.2.1 on your Mac. Well today we are showing some love for our Windows faithful.

This guide will show you how to jailbreak the iPhone 3g only, not the first generation iPhone. Some important notes before we begin: You must have iTunes 8 installed and you must be on firmware 2.2.1, if you are not, be sure to update via iTunes. Also make sure to go into the task manager and disable ANYTHING Apple or iTunes related.

Let’s get started, after the jump!

1. Get the tools.

Once you are positive you are running the 2.2.1 on your iPhone 3G and have iTunes 8 installed it’s time to get the tools you will need. Create a folder on your desktop named “Pwnage”, then download the following files into that folder.

Once you have downloaded the above files you should unzip the QuickPwn zip file inside the Pwnage folder you just created.

2. Launch QuickPwn

This should be simple enough no? Launch QuickPwn from the folder you extracted it to on your desktop.

3. Connect your iPhone 3G

Connect your iPhone 3G via USB to your computer and click the blue arrow to continue.

4. Locate Firmware

Now we have to click the browse button to locate your iPhone 3G firmware.

5. Selecting the 2.2.1 firmware IPSW

Select the 2.2.1 firmware IPSW file from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop then select the IPSW file and click the open button.

6. Firmware Verification

QuickPwn will now verify you have selected the correct firmware. After it is verified click the blue arrow to continue.

7. Customize your firmware

This step allows you select what you’d like installed on your iPhone. You have the ability to select Cydia, Installer, and replace boot logos. Once you have made your selections click the blue arrow to continue on. If you want a full jailbreaking experience, installing Cydia and Installer is highly recommended.

8. Verify connection

QuickPwn will noW verify that your iPhone 3G is still connected to your PC. Again click the blue arrow to continue your journey…

9. Potential Tricky Part – Pay Attention

Ok, this part seems to give some people issues, but I assure you it does work. QuickPwn will now put your iPhone 3G into recovery mode. When its in recovery mode you will be given directions to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

10. Let the jailbreaking begin – no going back now!

QuickPwn will detect your phone is in DFU mode and proceed with the jailbreaking process.

11. You are officially jailbroken – Congrats!

Well that’s it folks, it’s time to start exploring this whole new world you have just opened. For answers to more of the questions you may have regarding jailbreaking please head on into our forums. There are always members of our community willing to help you out!

TiPb Answers: Why No Flash Video on the iPhone?
  1. Terry says:

Yeah it’s very simple. I was caught off guard when the popped up on me.

The odd thing is it told me to hold down for 20 seconds but when it got to 7 it stopped counting and continued on.

  2. Dave says:

if i jailbreak and then want to go back to how it was before jailbreak, how easy is it to reverse this?

  3. Jeremy Sikora says:

All you do to reverse it is do a simple restore via iTunes and you are good to go. It’s that easy.

  4. Dave says:

Just done the jailbreak and really impressed how all my music and apps etc are still there! :-)

  5. iVitto says:

Works nice, just like I did it a few weeks ago. Very clear instructions.

    http://www.ivitto.wordpress.com

  6. Memphis iPhone says:

What will happen when the next version Apple’s software is released? Will jail broken phones need to be rstored and then broken again with QuickPwn 2.2? If so, what will happen to all the jail broken customizations or apps installed? Thanks for the help.

  7. Brooks says:

I would like to know the answer to question 6 as well. thanks :)

  8. To answer number 6… yes you will have to restore in iTunes. Which is not a big deal at all. At least not to me.

  9. Brooks says:

1 more question. Can I still sync my jailbroken iPhone 3G to iTunes to get all my songs and all that?

  10. @Brooks, you sure can.

  11. jesse says:

I just bought my first iPhone. Switched from blackberry. I am just curious about the upside of jailbreaking? I am sorry if I am in wrong post for this question.

  12. Brooks says:

Ok, I opened Quickpwn and it first told me that it didn’t support my firmware version but I restarted it and it seems ok now. When clicking the next arrow after it tells me to plug in my iphone, it started searching or something and found like 3 firmware files? The firmware in this guide that I downloaded is the one I guide it to right? If you could respond real quick it would be great! :)

  13. Hank Scorpio says:

Is there any reason for the QuickPwn application not being able to load? Getting an error saying it failed to initialize properly(0xc0000135). Tried re-torrenting, getting from other mirrors, nothing seems to be working. Machine running XP. Thanks

  14. @Brooks, you would be correct sir. ;)

  15. Haizhou says:

I can finish the QuickPwn process, but the Installer dosn’t work. Can not install any application. Any idea?

  16. Rick says:

These directions specifically say the iPhone 3G, is there a different IPSW file for the 2G’s?

  17. @Rick, yes there is. This was done on purpose due to some changes between 2g and 3g methods that may have confused some people. This is for 3g’s only.

  18. Chris Vitek says:

If you jailbreak, you lose all information (programs, contacts, datebook, etc) on the phone and have to reinstall, correct?

  19. Kevin says:

    Chris Vitek,

No, that’s not the case. I just did it, and all my music, calendar, contacts, etc are still there.

  20. wonder Webb says:

took the plunge an jailbroke my 3g uk iPhone yesterday ! Everything seemed fine till I tried some of my app store applications. Got the usual programs starting then closing scenario it even did this to the main phone application! Found some of the jailbroke apps good but none that really made me think it’s worth the hassle .anyway suppose I’ll try it again soon when I’ve got a few spare hours LOL . Was glad it was easy enough to restore my phone to it’s settings before I jailbroke now all I’d good again. Any ideas on what could have been the problem would be apprciated cheers chaps!

  21. Lorraine says:

Hi, the process went through like a dream, but still shows as locked and although it will now recognise another SIM i.e. vodaphone I cant unlock the phone. Asks me to connect to iTunes and of course iTunes tells me its an unsupported SIM. – pop in my O2 SIM and all’s right with the world. Any suggestions as to what I do next, would be appreciated.

  22. @Lorraine, this procedure is for jailbreaking only. You can not unlock any phones with this. You would need to download bootnueter from Installer and run that. That will unlock your phone to use with different sims/carriers.

  23. Allen says:

Please Help !! I did the above and all worked as planned.. I got all the responses as mentioned above and now my Iphone has the pineapple logo on the screen and that is all it does. Nothing else appears and when I pull up Itunes it locks up itunes as well. Any help ? Thanks in advance

  24. song says:

Sounds like fun lolz but wat does jailbreaking do to the phone?

  25. Rey says:

@wonder Webb, after jailbreaking, go to Cydia, find/install the app Bossprefs, then tap the button that says “fix user did permissions”. That should fix your open/close issues.

@Allan, you may have to redo the process. Or restore back to original firmware first then try again.

To answer a few questions ive noticed: -Jailbreaking allows you to install 3rd party apps los of which are free. -These apps include Cycorder(video camera), SwirlyMMS(MMS Picture messaging), Winterboard(full visual customization), Quickgold(quick application/contacts launching), PdaNet(Internet tethering), TouchCast(streaming video podcasts), Snapture(zoomable and more camera), Categories(I have 50 apps all on one page categorized), SSH, the list goes on and on. The added features you get are well worth it. -For those fresh jailbrekers, don’t use the Installer app, use the Cydia app to install apps. It’s much more stable. -New firmware means new QuickPwn will be needed. Customizations of 3rd party apps can be backed up via SSH if new firmware come out -You do not lose any contacts, music, calendars, etc. It gets restored back after.

  26. AAN says:

How long it takes to jailbreak completely, bcoz it is almost more than 1 hr. still it has not restarted my iphone 2G Please help

    Thanks

  27. Jeremy Sikora says:

@AAN, like it states up front, this process is for the iPhone 3g ONLY. I suggest you restore your phone in iTunes. Good luck.

  28. AAN says:

thanks Jeremy Sikora, But now my iphone is such a state that it is not been recognized in itunes, what next …. I tried the same process several times but its the same … If possible could you please guide me how to restore…

  29. mark says:

you may want to try to do a dfu restore. This is done by a combination of holding down the home and power buttons for a certain amount of time. Google dfu mode and dfu restore for iphone to try.

  30. Bart says:

Identical problem to Hank Scorpio’s message dated: September 29th, 2008 at 7:37 pm. Saw no response. Where do I go to find out how to resolve this? Pretty please? Many thanks, Bart

  95. Newbie says:

The smoothest install yet! Great easy to follow instructions. Thank you!!

  96. Newbie says:

CORRECTION: Deleting ‘Kate’ from Installer app will enable the phone keypad! Woo hoo!

Just followed your instruction on my 3 week old 3G iPhone, what a breeze! Thanks for the instructions…now I can really enjoy my phone!

  98. nouyz says:

  99. Anoop says:

Brilliant!!! Worked smoothly in the first try.

    thanks a lot

  100. John in Podunk says:

Brand New 3G with 2.1. I’ve tried this process many times over a few days. Everything goes well until putting it in DFU. I get to the screen telling me how to do the keys but nothing seems to work. It just sits there waiting.

I’ve tried it with iTunes running and shut down. Every time I end up cancelling the thing and then lose everything. Have to restore.

Any ideas? It must be something simple if I’m the only one having this problem.

    Thanks
