@Steve regarding call history while on a call, I had this issue earlier today, while still in the 2.2 OS and found that whilest on a call, if you press the add a call button it brings up the phone menu as if you weren’t on a call and you can access the recents list on the bottom as normal…

What also is a crap feature for 2.0 is the fact that numbers internationally baffle the ipod etc ( +27 72 4568888) which is the same as internal 0724568888. you end up having to save the number twice for a contact, otherwise half the time you dont recognise the number. surely Apple can register the last so many digits and recognise a contact.

You can download it onto an existing iphone ex. 1st gen 2nd gen or 3g. but on first gen there will be reduced functionality such as no mms. And on 3g there may be slightly reduced functionality pertaining to rumors that people have found a camera option and it will only be available to the next generation iphone which hasn’t even been officially announced yet. And if your phone is jailbroken as stands you will not be able to upgrade

I was hoping for the ability to turn off G3 data access (similar to turning off Data roaming) but for the home network.

In Australia we pay an amazing US$ 0.27c per MB if we go over our set limit (mine is 700MB/month), so being able to turn off this facility and only use wi-fi would be a huge benefit.

I would also have liked to see an indicator on the calls list as to if the call was incoming or outgoing.

I do think this article was a little to long but that being said it gave me a better understanding of the new software. What I didn’t like is that this should have been I the 3g iPhone . These updates were for some reason not in it and a great dissapointment. But better late then never I guess . I can’t get over how much people complain about the lack of features on the iPhone. JAILBREAK it! Then you can have all the video camera and landscape and sound (as well as look) changes you want! Sheesh. Plus, it’s free and easy to do. It can be reverted back to normal at any time, so it’s not like you’ll lose your warranty. Screw Apple if they say it’s against the Terms of Use. It’s my phone, I’ll do what I want to it.

Thanks for the nice article. Very informative. I was wondering if there are any rumours about making the calendar a bit more flexible. The default alerts are very limiting. It would be nice to see something more like a Palm setup that allows more customization of time before events and multiple alert repeats until the alert is dismissed.

I just with they would add true meeting capability to calendar and email… Where you can accept a meeting notice and have it added to your calendar and also when adding an appointment, the ability to add attendees with notifications… This would be a great addition especially if coupled with similar additions to MobileMe.

I'd like to see multiple ring/alert profiles. I hate to make the obvious comparison, but my BlackBerry came with 5 profiles, and allowed me to make more.

The iPhone's binary choice, either silent (with vibe) or on (noise, vibe, etc) is severely limiting. How about a profile called "Calls Only" so that the phone will ring, but emails, sms, and other alerts are muted or vibe-only? And the profile can be selected with two clicks. Many smartphones and dumbphones have such capabilities, but not the iPhone?

I have a question : does someone have used the apple av cable (composite or rvb) with this beta firmware ? Is it possible to switch the audio output on thru the cable or thru the iPhone speaker ? Same for video ? Want I want is to be able to use the av cable to charge and to continue seeing video and hearing sound through iPhone.

My second question is about ad2p abilyties : is it possible to use the remote commands of the ad2p headphone to control audio volume or to forward backward songs ? (example using the very good Sony Ericsson module ?)

I wish we can have a On/Off toggle button for the iPod landscape. I don't really like the landscape mode of iPod and find it irritating that it always go into that mode when I lie on the bed or so.

Nevertheless, I'd (very much!) care to see the following enhancements to the OS (and the new hardware, whether the latter materialises in summer or not):

Much improved Memory & Processor Management! iPhone (not unlike anything else of the format, I allow) is quite lacking here!..
Haptic feedback: I've installed a component to enable it (cost me jailbreaking) - quite a delight to operate the phone vibrating gently to touches!
[Yet more] extended search capabilities. Extensive metadata support.
Additional input methods (such as the ShapeWriter's and one with larger keys for most frequently used letters - and smaller ones - for the rest. There's been enough research done on the subject).
Unified folders property for multiple email accounts (e.g., InBox; OutBox, Drafts, Trash, etc.), up to the user to configure, of course.
Enhanced MIME support (for instance, enabling user to assign a program to open a mail attachment received)…
Configurable compression ratio for photographs either made or transferred to (ánd from) the iPhone.
Automatic or manual wireless backup and restore to and from one's MobileMe account (to backup both the [iPhone] system and 3rd party data stored in the device). Very convenient against data loss when away from one's computer for long.

As a sidenote - not intended for Apple - I hope for an iPhone-optimised SoftMaker Office (or even Textmaker alone)! Stands beyond comparison with both Documents to Go and the QuickOffice's suite on any platform! Alas, the dinosaurs of SoftMaker require quite a bit of pressure to embark on iPhone development journey, hence my mention…

I've read all around, followed blogs, scrutinized reviews but can't seem to find it. How about Outlook (activesync) capability? Any improvements? From what I've seen from a few friends it was a hit-and-miss affair, with workarounds and missing features, occasional inabilities to sync etc.

I'm not expecting it to work as well as a WinMo device in this department, that would be asking too much.

What I'm concerned is my device can search in all fields - such as notes in contacts (you can add notes to contacts), which I use frequently. Can the new spotlight feature do this?

And I've read you can sync notes and todos now. How does it work? Where does it sync?

Can I save my sound memos to my computer without emailing them to myself? Emailing stuff to/from myself is not a good workflow, too much of a workaround..

How do I put documents on the device, also without emailing them to myself? Can I transfer files over wifi/bluetooth/usb - (which is very useful when away from home computer, i.e. no paired itunes setup)?

It is good the iphone is maturing, it is a good platform. My existing niggles are the non-removable battery and the "no accessible filesystem" roadblock. The current notification system needs improvement, but Apple will get around to that in due course I'm sure.

Im a black berry user and had the iphone for 30 days before the 2 yr contract period kicked in and then returned it for the following. The Iphone was great except the call volume and conference volume extremely low compared to my blackberry and I couldnt delete email in batches or delete all on the Iphone which is imperative in my line of work since i have 5 email accounts and receive hundreds of email a week. The SMS lack of functionality and landscape functionality was an issue and last the battery time compared to my blackberry was considerably low. Actually, the clock did change. They corrected the behavior of the stop watch. It no longer resets to zero when using the lap feature, so you know at a glance the total time… at least that is my experience! Thanks for the walkthrough. The copy and paste is a great long awaited addition.

Really looking forward to the cut, copy, paste and spotlight features which I have missed greatly since switching from BB. I have owned 9 BBs over past 5-6 years and still think they are better for email and phoning (iphone seems to freeze too much) but believe the Bold is better than the Storm which seems to have been rushed to market and had software glitches. Having said that iphone is a better all-round device as the net surf and numerous apps give it the edge. In truth they are two different things BB is a phone with some apps so upgrading is more limited – iphone is a mini computer where software updates make incremental leaps (e.g. OS3)

What I don’t see listed is a way to limit the number of contacts uploaded to the car’s factory installed bluetooth module. Currently the iPhone loads ALL contacts which isn’t very useful when thumbing through them using the steering wheel buttons. Let me specify “favorites only”, please!

Hi,

I’m a member of ADC and the iPhone Dev Program so I can put ithe update on my phone, however I’m running O2 pay as you go on the first generation iPhone so I have to activate/unlock it. Luckily, I haven’t had to perform any jailbreaks/pwnages/unlocks for a while as the baseband hasn’t been modified on it.

However, I’d like to know if it can be confirmed whether any future 3.0 betas will have protection against this or whether there will be any baseband updates where I have to wait for a new unlock. I’d like to know so that I can decide whether to apply the new update in confidence, without risk of being locked out permanently from my phone!

By the way, is it a simple update or would I have to restore to install it?

I have 3 questions. 1) Where is the video recording? 2) Why can’t we listen to Sirius Satellite radio over our phones yet? 3) Anyone really care about the voice Msg’s? I mean my Bag phone from the late 80′s was able to recode voice MSG’s. Who cares about that.

Hey guys, I think the diagonal lines in the new Messages icon and the Phone and iPod icons are supposed to look like finger prints. At least, that is what they look like to me.

kinda bummed they didn’t add a distribution list option for sms or mail. i send out messages to 18 people on my text and alot more on my email list on my mac no love though.

New to the Calendar application is, that you can now add invitees to an event on an ActiveSynce account. Unfortunately, however, no mails get sent to the invitees added just yet, but I assume that bug will be fixed eventually. On the exchange account, however, the invitees actually show up with their status. This is a new feature in 3.0 which was gravely missed in 2.0.

In the Safari section you seem to suggest that Copy/Paste can only select whole blocks of texts in Safari and by moving your finger you can add adjacent blocks/paragraphs. However, I think that once you initially select a block you can reposition the top or bottom blue dot and it allows you to select only a few words or lines and not the whole block. JOJO – as for your comment that any Storm owner would have to agree that the iPhone is better is something I cannot agree with. It was a tough choice between the two phones, but I decided to go with the Storm as it came with Documents To Go, and due to the camera and video features. I am sure that the next hardware upgrade to the iPhone will be amazing, so when that time comes I may consider switching over.

Regarding “Thai” keyboard, I’d have to say that it’s just a keyboard with Thai character. Because the actual TH keyboard layout is not as seen in the capture.

So, will Apple finally rid the App Store of redundant workaround apps like Landscape Email apps, MMS apps, Multi-Photo Emailing apps, etc... or will devs be able to keep them in with hopes of unknowing users buying them? Once they've been approved can they be unapproved and removed?

I think voice recorder apps, which aren't really 'workaround' apps, but rather now 'alternative' apps, will still available.

Great article.. But one thing I was wondering.. Has Apple FINALY added the ability to change the mail alert sound?? I have been pleading with Apple for well over a year to add that.. Seems like something very simple to do, yet many updates to the OS and it’s still not there.. I know I’m not the only one requesting/demanding this simple change.. At work I’m surrounded by iPhones and we all grab our phones at the same time when someone’s mail alert goes off.. It’s kind of funny and sad at the same time..

I skimmed through but I will hve a proper reply later in the day.

For now I would like to say that maybe the maps update will be left for the new hardware ?similar to how the 3G iphone has GPS and the first gen does not.

In calendar I would like to create my own calendars. Also if I create a new event, I'm limited to changing it from one calender [ from person to ' to-do' fir example ]

In settings , I know for a fact I want them I change the ' wifi ' tab to ' network '. Where the 3G is located is extremely annoying to get to.

Has there been any information about line-item phone call deletion?

Obviously, you can do it with SMS or MMS, but the only clear option for phone call is cumulative.

the issue I have with this article is that any realistic person who owns a storm will still admit that iphone is much better. I own a storm and I debate with iphone users all the time about how great the storm is, but to be real it isn’t better than the iphone, not even close, and I am just playing devil’s advocate (even if I like my storm) its not better than an iphone. Be real (even if you like it a lot), be honest, and don’t spread propaganda.

So, there’s still no access to the Recent Call list while having someone placed on Hold? This is such a baffling omission. I’ve had several people ask me for the day or time that someone else had called me, and I can never give then an accurate answer.

I’m still hoping they’ll do something bout that springboard os to let us organize apps byt he time 3.0 comes out… they said over 100 new features and they didn’t show us 100 new ones so I assume there is more just not ready to show us.
