** CAREFUL ** no contract phone is locked to Rogers/Fido. So you’re not obliged into a contract but you can’t use your phone anywhere else. Nice SCAM Rogers and Apple.

Nice job Keith. Keep spinning. You managed to say absolutely nothing in your post other than Rogers is charging Fido customers more because they can. Why not give us the option of choosing the Rogers deal and extending our contracts by a year, or go the Fido route?

An iPhone 3GS would cost me $199 with Rogers but $556 with Fido. I realize not being beholden to Rogers for an extra year is worth something, but that's a rather big difference.

PS - I pay the "system access fee." Turns out Fido's new plans "without" the fee are more expensive than the old ones with it. You guys just stuck the fee into the plan and added a little gravy on top.

Hey all, I'm with Rogers/Fido and wanted to respond to comments about the differences between the Rogers and Fido Upgrade offers.

Fido is a different brand with different pricing and we've introduced an offer that is more in line with that brand. For many customers it is a much better upgrade offer. While Rogers customers who have had their iPhone 3G for less than six months aren't eligible for an upgrade, Fido customers can redeem their FidoDollars and top them up with an additional $100 in savings. Moreover, Fido customers do not need to extend their contracts in order to qualify for these savings.

And of course, Fido customers continue to receive many unique benefits including free incoming text messages, no system access fee and the opportunity to earn back FidoDollars.

Ok – so it looks like when you add the 1 extra year to your term for the special pricing, it also adds another year to your HUP. This according to a Rogers Rep who is answering questions on Twitter. So I’ll be eligible for full subsidy pricing in July 2010 – but if I take advantage of this special upgrade pricing it gets pushed back to June 2011.

So that means when Apple releases another new iPhone next year, I’ll be in the same boat as I am this year – not eligible for the subsidy pricing. So do I chance it that Rogers will again have special pricing next year for a new iPhone for those that upgraded to 3GS – or do I just wait another year and not deal with this whole mess?

Why do Fido customers get screwed over???

As far as I see as a consumer, I'm just about the same as the eligible Rogers customer. I pay well over $100/month so why can't I get the phone for the same price? This is just stupid, I'm going to see what I can get done tomorrow.

I tried to discuss things with a representative and he a) wasn't aware of the plans and b) claimed to be unable to do anything (maybe he was, we don't know!). This really irks me getting treated as a lower class customer. When I first signed up for Fido, I signed up because I liked their branding, and they seemed by and large the same as Rogers, but with slightly better voice rates. If I'd known Rogers gets the better deal often, I'd have signed up with them instead! Gr this is stupid, it's the same damn company, and really, how different am I from the Rogers customer? Almost no difference!

Chris. If you cancel your service, you will have to pay ECF of 400$ + 100$ for data. That's 500$. Then you go to Fido and sign a new contract. That's 200$ for the 16GB. You will end up paying a total of 700$ to get the 16GB with a new 3 years contract. You'd be better using the 1 year HUP upgrade at 449$.

What I want to know is WHERE can we get it? Online only or Rogers/Apple store.

I bought mine October 16th but I only spend $60 a month but am not on a contract. So I’ll probably cancel my service and port my number to Fido so I can get a new phone unless Rogers offers me the new phone for $199 on an renewal of a 3 year term. We’ll see I guess.

I’m with fido and there promos not good enough I’d still be at 550-650 which is too much. Not that I’d be able to get Rogers better deal if I were with them. The phone is not worth my spending that much especially while I’m doing school instead of working. If I could get the cheaper deal Rogers has I’d go for it in a heartbeat. At 500 or less for the bigger size I’d be tempted big time.

Maybe a little. I spend $90 a month — I sort of wish there was a scale for how much you get off. But some is better then none. I still want to know what this means for next year when Apple releases another new iPhone. Will there be special offers then – or is this the last of it and we have to suck it up now. And with this added 1 year, does this mean my HUP goes up to 24 months from when I get the 3GS? Very important questions.
