Dev-Team - iPhone 3GS Jailbreak Possible via 24Kpwn, Unlock via ultrasn0w?

The illustrious iPhone Dev-Team says that the 24Kpwn techniques, originally developers as part of the iPod touch 2G jailbreak efforts, look like they just might work on the iPhone 3GS as well!

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS

They're also confident that the recently released ultrasn0w unlock will work on the iPhone 3GS once they get the jailbreak up and running.

No word on a time table for all this yet, but would-be jailbreakers keep them fingers crossed...!

(And for those still itching to customize the iPhone 3G, Jeremy now has full redsn0w jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock guides up for both Mac OS X and Windows PCs)

[Thanks to XM_JDM in the TiPb iPhone Forums for catching this!]

    I wonder how amaizing the 3Gs will run the Jailbreak?

    We could probably have some sweet Winterboard themes and such and it would run faster and snappier.

    Though i don't think i'm going to jailbreak justyet...

    I think jailbreaking might kill my battery on the 3Gs...

    imagine backgrounder with more 170mb RAM free instead of lame 40-50

  7. xxzone says:

    It wasn't all dev-team. It was also @geohot & the chronic Dev_Team

  8. Carolinamic says:

    I might just grab a 3gs after all

  9. Joe McG says:

    @antonioj

    I definitely agree. Iphone 3GS with backgrounder would be like a whole new phone.

    Now that I have jailbroken my 3G and can see memory info on SBSettings, I definitely understand why Apple doesn't enable background applications on the 3G. The memory resources just aren't there. I don't see how it's possible without crashing programs constantly. However, the 3GS is a whole different story.

    I'm definitely going to get a 3GS once the jailbreak is available and semi-stable.

    @ ALL

    Backgrounder now available for 3.0!!! Installing....

  11. iPhoneMilk says:

    @Joe,

    I am kind of afraid and weary of Jailbreaking and running Background Apps.

    First off, Why? there's no point.

    I can only think of ONE type of App that i want to run in the background and that's Radio/Pandora Apps. Other then that what else do we need to run in the background? Nothing... We have push now for Chatting/IMING...

    I don't think i want to keep all those things in the background as well and use up more battery power as well... I just don't see a USE for having apps in the background...

    Also non useful background apps LOAD instantly anyway on the 3Gs... i mean anytime i want to launch something its almost instant.

  12. Guido says:

    This is perfect!! I'm heading to Europe for 2 months and now I might be able to use my phone for cheap!!!

  13. Joe McG says:

    @iphonemilk

    I felt the same way until I did a jailbreak on my 3g earlier this week. Please do a google search for sbsettings, intelliscreen, elert, and tlert and check them out. These apps are the reason to jailbreak.

    I agree that backgrounder is really onLy useful for pandora, but that is what I want it for!
