Boxing Day Sales

The day after Christmas is Boxing Day in Canada, which has become the northern equivalent of the US’ Black Friday sales extravaganza and now typically stretches the entire week before New Year.

So, Canadians, whether you’re looking to get $20 off a 64GB iPod touch G3 from BestBuy.ca, $30 off a 16GB iPod touch 2G from sister store Futureshop.ca, or just get some music deals from Apple’s iTunes Store Canada, either brave the cold and crowds, or surf the web for savings.

And if it you find any great deals, let us know about them!

Of course it is, leave it to the Canadians to have huge holiday savings AFTER the holidays. Makes perfect sense.

  2. Iain 117 says:

Not just the Canadians, the UK too, does this

“Boxing Day in Canada, which has become the northern equivalent of the US’ Black Friday sales”

That’s a strange comment from a Canadian writer, Rene.

Long, long, long before anyone in the US had even thought of Black Friday (ie the 1950s), there were Boxing Day sales in Canada. They actually make a little more retail sense than Black Friday – as they were/are intended to clear unsold Christmas stock.

Black Friday has always seemed a little odd to me – ie take the busiest shopping season of the year, when goods will sell regardless, and heavily discount them.

Who’s boxing? Is there fighting involved?

  5. Stan the Man says:

No way eh! Those are some great deals you nob! I’m gonna pour me a cold Elsinore Lager and skidoo to the mall or Canadian Tire. It’s pretty cold out, maybe I’ll go to Tim Hortons first. Thanks Rene. Happy Boxing Day!

  6. Eh boy says:

I live in Vancouver, BC and my family lives in Toronto, ON and neither of us have snow on the ground and temps were above 0. Didn’t like almost half of the US get a whole wack of snow the other day? ignorant fools.

  7. Oboewan says:

Fastlane: It’s “boxing” as in “putting things in cardboard containers to give as gifts.”

  8. Chirpstuff says:

Australia also does this. So do most Asian countries – at least hong kong does n

  9. Joe says:

they do it to get rid of the extra stuff

  10. Killer says:

Yeah lots of countries do this. USA is an odd, odd, ODD country

  11. SaggyBalls says:

@Joe Well, if they had discounted it appropriately in the first place, there wouldn’t be an “stuff to get rid of”.
