How to set up and start using your Apple Watch

Apple Watch will help you stay informed, stay in shape, stay in touch, and more. Once you set it up.

The Apple Watch is the most personal computer the company ever made. You wear it on your wrist and it pairs with the iPhone in your pocket or bag. From there it gives you notifications and widget-like glances, tracks your activity and exercise, handles calls and messages, makes payments, and controls your music and TV, and more. You can even customize your Apple Watch by swapping bands, changing clock faces, and more.

Here's everything you need to know to get started!

How to view activity levels on Apple Watch

The Activity app on Apple Watch monitors how much time you spending sitting, moving, and exercising.

These three types of activity are each represented by a colored ring. Inside the Activity app on your Apple Watch you can view how close you are to meeting each of these goals. In order to meet all three goals, you'll have to stand for at least one minute each hour for 12 hours, exercise for 30 minutes, and meet your calorie goal for the day. You can check your progress with the Activity app whenever you'd like. Here's how:

NSFW: Imagining a new Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad

I'm an unabashed fan of mechanical keyboards, so you might assume that I don't like the new tech in the MacBook, but you'd be wrong.

I love it. I want to see it everywhere, especially on the desktop. I'm smitten with two parts of the new MacBook: The keyboard and the new trackpad. I'd love to see them available for desktop Macs too.

How to set a calorie goal with Activity for Apple Watch

Part of staying active with Apple Watch involves setting a personal goal for yourself.

The built-in Activity app on your Apple Watch makes this easy enough by allowing you to choose a goal of how many calories you'd like to burn each day. You'll try to complete this goal alongside with making a conscious effort to stand for at least one minute each hour and performing at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Your progress for all three is represented by three colorful rings. As you get closer to completing these goals each day, the rings will come closer to being a complete circle.

While exercise and stand goals can't be changed, you can adjust your calorie goal whenever you'd like. Here's how!

How to set up and use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch: The ultimate guide

How to set up and use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch

With the Apple Watch and Apple Pay, paying a tab or bill is as easy as waiving your wrist.

Apple Pay currently lets you pay for things on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus by tapping your phone and verifying your thumbprint via Touch ID. Apple Watch not only makes Apple Pay more convenient than ever, it also brings point of sale support for Apple Pay to older devices that don't have NFC (near-field-communication) built-in. In this case, that means iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s owners with Apple Watches can now take full advantage of Apple Pay.

As long as you're within the United States and have a credit or debit card from a supported bank, you can start using Apple Pay on your Apple Watch right now. Here's everything you need to know!

How to extend Apple Watch battery life: Power saving tips!

How to extend Apple Watch battery life: Power saving tips!

Apple has done everything they can to maximize battery life on the Apple Watch. Now here's what you can do!

The OLED display, the S1 computer-on-a-chip, the Watch OS software, Bluetooth Low Energy — it all works in tandem to ensure the Apple Watch is sipping power rather than sucking it. Yet battery life remains the single greatest constraint in mobile. It's the currency you use to pay for every pixel and every bit. If you're running low on power, and you have your charger close by, you can simply plug in and keep going. If you're away from your charger, however, there are still a few things you can do to eke out a little more time. They'll cost you some convenience and some fun, but they'll keep you going for as long as possible.

How to set a default card for Apple Pay on Apple Watch

If you use a particular credit or debit card more than others, you can set it as your Apple Pay default on your Apple Watch.

Most of us end up using a specific credit or debit card for making purchases more than the others. Perhaps you get more rewards with that specific card, or something else. Regardless of the reason, you can set a default card on your Apple Watch, just like you can on your iPhone. This way, you don't have to swipe through cards each time looking for the one you want to use. Just hold up your wrist and your default card is automatically used.

How to remove a card from Apple Pay on Apple Watch

If you get a new credit or debit card, or one of yours expires, you'll want to remove it from Apple Pay on your Apple Watch.

Just like most things, our credit and debit cards end up expiring after a few years, or we replace them with newer cards that give us better perks. While you could always leave old cards where they are without any ill effects, Passbook will start to look quite cluttered and the cards you have to swipe through in order to find the one you want can become unmanageable. Just like you can remove cards from Apple Pay on iPhone, here's how to do the same on your Apple Watch!

Check if your favorite app is available on the Apple Watch with this great site

Seeing if an app has gained support for the Apple Watch is now as easy as typing its name into a website, thanks to developer Cesare Rocchi.

CanIHazaWatchApp is a new site from Cesare Rocchi, the developer behind Neater app and others, which allows you to type in the name of your favorite iPhone or iPad app to see if it supports the Apple Watch. We are already keeping an extensive list of all the apps that we see gain Apple Watch support, but options are always good to have.

Secret Apple Watch controls: How to navigate what's on your wrist!

The Apple Watch has two hardware buttons and a capacitive screen but, just like the iPhone, there's a lot you can do with them!

There's no Home button on the Apple Watch but there is a Digital Crown which can not only do many of the same functions, it can also scroll and zoom. Likewise, there's no Sleep/Wake button, but there's a Side button that can do lots more, including calling up your frequent contacts. Put them together, and add in a screen that can register touch and Force Touch and, well, you have all the options you need!
