AutoCAD WS now available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

We knew it was coming, but today, Autodesk have released AutoCAD® WS for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

  • Open DWG drawings uploaded to your free* AutoCAD WS online workspace
  • See all aspects of your DWG file, including external references, layers, and image underlays
  • Use Multi-Touch zoom and pan to more easily navigate very large drawings

  • Tap objects to select, then move, rotate, and scale

  • Draw or edit shapes with accuracy using Snap and Ortho modes
  • Add and edit text annotations directly on your device; no need for paper mark-ups
  • Validate distance measurements in the drawing while you are onsite at the actual location
  • Save your edits to your AutoCAD WS online workspace, so your drawings stay up to date

  • Share designs with others directly from your device

  • Work with other people on the same DWG file simultaneously
  • View edits to drawings in real time: AutoCAD WS immediately captures changes made by you and others in your online workspace.

The app is free and available now in the app store. If you're an AutoCAD user and you try it out, leave us a comment and let us know how it works for you.

AutoCAD WS now available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

The simultaneous editing thing is pretty cool! And I'm surprised they included any editing features at all - I expected basically a viewer with some light annotation features.

Too bad they don't let you open files from email or iDisk. You have to upload all files to their cloud workspace to view them. Useless. I wanted to be able to receive drawings in the field via email and open them on my iPad.

I wonder just how much space each person is allocated. Autocad files can get pretty large. I'm also surprised at editing features and think a non-editing log in would be good. But hey, it's free!

Helvetica, there's a plug-in that lets you upload files to the cloud service directly from the desktop version of Autocad... that might serve your needs if you can get the people you work with to install it.

Also check out the blog, it says opening email attachments is coming:
"Our next release will include:
Offline access without a Wifi/3G connection.
Open drawings which were received as e-mail attachments.
Stylesheets and layouts support.
Different unit types support (inches, feet, meters, etc.)
Improved snapping tools."

Thanks, Grant. Yeah, I saw that on their blog. Apparently the next release is a couple months away ... oh well I can wait.

Anyone else getting the error message that they are not connected to the autocad WS server, even tho they are?

Richd, I'm having the exact same issue. Hope someone can answer this. Seems to be timing out.

@Richd @Gavin
Yup, same here. Their servers are probably overloaded with people trying out the new app. Surely they should have anticipated this?!

@Donald, hah yeah you would think they would have anticipated the reception of the app and free server space! Strangely today when I logged in on my iPad it would say there were no files in my folder even tho there were 6-7, which I could see when logging in on the computer. This is a cool offering so I'm happy to give them the time then need to fix any problems.

Mine is telling me "no connection" too...almost makes me believe this platform isn't quite baked yet. Disappointing so far!

The iPhone app different from iPad app significantly? Installed on a 3GS. Where's offset, pedit, 3D views? Regular acad2011 user, this is a good viewer, will be better with airprint.

Hello all,
I just got AutoCad Ws for my Ipad. Any word when we can expect more editing tools? (Copy, Paste, Rotate, Mirror, etc..) I know these things take time but I gotta have them! Anyone hear anything?

I'd like to use the autocadWS to create smth, not to use my other works and just add them!!!it doesn't give me that possibility!!and it's uncomfortable!iphone's screen is not enough for editing files i'd like to...
