How to view timestamps for individual texts and iMessages in iOS 7

The Messages app got a brand new look in iOS 7 and with that came some new features. One of them is the ability to view timestamps for every text or iMessage you send or receive. Previously you only saw sporadic timestamps but now you can see when you send and received each and every message on your iPhone or iPad.

Here's how:

  1. Launch the Messages app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the message thread that you'd like to view a particular timestamp for and find that particular message.
  3. Anywhere in the message area, slide your finger from right to left to reveal timestamps for each individual message.

Once you're done viewing a timestamp, just release your finger and the timestamps will again be hidden off to the side. That's all there is to it. It's not a very obvious feature at fight sight but it's definitely a welcome addition.

Help and how to editor for iMore. I can take apart an iPhone in less than 6 minutes. I also like coffee and Harry Potter more than anyone really should.

Thanks Ally, I noticed today the times were not on my texts today. Is there a way to leave the time stamps on permanently.

BTW, does Mallory have mono?

At first there were the contacts pictures next to my message but now I don't see it. How do I get it back?

Is there a way to set it up so I just see the times all the time without having to swipe? I always want to see the timestamps for all messages. Thanks.

Lisa Dowd says:

Thank you so much. This was driving me crazy that I couldn't tell what time the text actually arrived. If you leave the message open the next one doesn't give the timestamp where you can see it. Now I know how to find it, thank you.
