iMore show 326: Because Apple hates you

Hate that I can never remember my chat roll name so couldn't participate last night, but I fast forwarded just now and Kevin was talking about how RUDE it basically is for the iPhone to notify you while you are on a phone call and how sooooooo annoying that issssss especially when some people send lots of texts, very fast. Like ughhhh. Totally agree with him on that!! Is there any way you can stop this???? I too lose my train of thought.

Apple at this point....get with it, cuz they are killin' you. No more of these one yr phone releases and one year new updates. And get with it on the screen size and speaker sound. Fat it up and feed us. Love my iPhone 4. Won't give you my money until I see lots more improvement on the phone. Where is that untethered 6.0 jailbreak???? Would like to shut my wifi on/off asap not 3 million steps. :-)

why don't you use banner notifications then? I think they're the best compromise between being notified and not having it interrupt what you're doing.

Yes, I use banner and like it! I wish I could discard the text message from the lock screen. a lot of times someone will text me with a simple answer, yes, no or ok. I got my answer, I hate having to slide, punch in lock code then turn phone back off just to clear the message!

although thats not a huge deal for me, i'd just leave the message, let it get pushed to top of window. and it will go away next time i need to use phone. but having a discard button in the lock screen sounds good, like i would say slide the opposite way to discard, and normal way to reply!

I heard that's been an issue on the iPhone iterations ago. I would have expected Apple to address this complaint from consumers with the iPhone 5. Surprised they didn't. Can't imagine this little feature will be hard to fix.

What don't you understand about they want to maintain a screen size that still allows you to use it with one thumb in one hand? If you need bigger, go Android. No one is killing Apple. They are still the number one single manufacturer of smartphone sales. Samsung is coming closer, but only by copying what Apple does. You know how much money HTC has been losing? Those screen sizes, quad-cores and beats audio may be good for us, but there is a real danger, HTC executives will decide they can't keep up with this fickle smartphone spec war. If you love your iPhone 4, keep using it until it's not useable. It's funny, because people want quad-cores, they want LTE, they want NFC, they want 6" screens etc. And what do they end up doing? Using IM or Facebook and texting.

while i'd agree on some points. i would not agree on making more than one phone a year. i think thats something they got going for them. why would i want to spend my money then see another iphone 2 months later? its rediculous. most things are software anyway, and yes i would like them to push much more updates with more improvements.

other thing is screensize. i think the 5 may already be too much. i always thought the size of the 4 was perfect. i dont want an iPad in my pocket or i woulda bought an ipad.

then Android will take over the world... i think the video is addressing a real problem that Apple needs to realize.. i don;t like apple.. but i think Apple needs to be around to keep innovating just like we need Android, WP8 and BB10 to continue and push companies to develop things we as consumers will enjoy..

u have to get over the fact Apple users are taking this video as a BASH APPLE video.. it's more of a deeper issue.. Apple needs to realize this to make their product better.. they can't take the "we are on top of the world and don't need to change" mentality like RIM did in the past!

You mean the android in which the majority of it's marketshare is made up of shovelware crap phones running a bare-skin version of the OS? Remember, less than 25% of all Android devices are running Ice Cream Sandwich and less than 2% are running jelly bean. They are introducing key lime pie soon. That tells you all you need to know about Android. The majority of android users are people who get those budget devices that run 2.3 or lower. There is very little unification. Try visiting google play with a plethora of devices, and numerous apps will say not supported for your device etc. Not to mention carriers and manufacturers have added their skins on top of the OS as well. Aside from the Nexus line or modders, no one runs stock android. They run android +touchwiz, Android +Sense etc.

If BB10 fails, Apple should buy RIM for their patent portfolio. The cognitive dissonance of the that should make CB-Kevin spontaneously combust. :)

I didn't even listen to this and I can say that BBOS 10 will not save RIM. Enterprises are leaving BES in droves, I recently removed 1000 BB from service to use either an iPhone or a Android phone that user got to chose and the overwhelming response was for iPhones.

Sadly RIM missed the boat in 2007 and business no longer trusts them to be around in the next 5 years. It is too little too late.

Your 0.001% sample size is more than adequate in determining the future. /s

You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Blackberry still used by 90% of Fortune 500 companies which still seem to "trust" them and their business dwarfs your 1,000 previously deployed BB's.

Advice: Do a bit of research, perhaps listen to the podcast and maybe you may find yourself obtaining some useful information before opening your mouth to give an opinion about your alternate reality.

I once was an Apple fanboy, to the point where I went out and got a 17" Macbook PRO and the Super -duper iMac 27" and now I'm going back to PC.
IF BlackBerry ever makes a QNX desktop I'm on it.
Windows is not good enough, Apple is not good enough and they want to run your life.
I understand why some people like Apple, but Jobs was a Nazi who wanted to run your life.
He made a Smartphone for dumb people.
Having said all that, and knowing I've p $$ed you all off (not my goal ), I just want to say, while I may no longer be enamored of Apple, Rene is a classy and intelligent guy.
The Crackman ain't no slouch either.
We all benefit from a scintillating, informative show long on non-partisan debate and edification for the intellect.
Kudos all around!!

Guys I love your interviews but I think you guys just ended up helping the likes of apple and droid....

Rene - Really surprised that you didn't inform or correct Kevin's take on Do Not Disturb. It is time based but he was not aware of that option, you could tell from his comments that he was setting the Do Not Disturb option on the Main Settings page instead of drilling down into the Notifications Settings. The criticism of how that is currently laid out is fair for sure, really non-intuitive.

Also, complaining about notifications popping up when doing another task then wanting to be able to reply within another app when a notification comes in seems hypocritical.

Steve

Late listener, soz.

It was difficult to keep listening. What can you say to someone who's stuck on physical keyboards and LEDs? Truly tragic. I weep for such well-intentioned optimism. Rene, you are too kind.

Thanks for sharing. I'm really sorry the beloved Blackberry will be but-a-memory this time next year, but don't be discouraged, Apple 1s fetch a decent price at auction. Keep the dream alive. Maybe someone will pay $100,000 for a working Blackberry in a few decades.

Sadly, Nokia won't be far behind (was it 2015?). That will leave Apple and its off-brand Samsung product (if Android doesn't collapse under its own complexity) and a few other players suckling from the same teat.

What will Apple do for competition then? Hope it gives them some time to build out cloud infrastructure.

Definitely learned alot from this conversation. YES, Apple should put it somewhere in their Fingertips Manuals that "this phone is designed for one-handed operation." That could have been the determining factor in my use of an iPhone vs a 9930. Ive tried typing on iPhones with two thumbs and thats all i was...thumbs! Ive got to go try that out again with one hand. Love the beauty of the iPhones, but I agree with Kevin, the utility of the keyboard for those that need it is hands down the best experience out there (key words: those that need it).
