Bento for iPad [$4.99- iTunes Link] is a fantastic database option for users of Filemaker’s Bento for Mac. It is a fast and simple database application for capturing just about anything from invoices to party planning to recipes.

I have been using Bento for Mac and iPhone for a while now. I was very excited to get the iPad version. Bento looks great. There are elegant themes that make Bento appear like a leather- bound book or clipboard. You can create a database on the fly from one of the supplied templates and sync it back to your Mac and iPhone. If you want, you can even make a database from scratch right on the iPad. When creating your database you have a choice of several fields including checkbox, choice, number, text and several more. Adding these fields to your new database couldn’t be easier; click the pencil icon and drag the field to the workspace. Once placed on the screen, choose that fields properties. One of the more impressive features I found was the ability to add a Media field and insert a picture directly from Saved Photos on the iPad. There is a nice shadow effect behind the image and it looks really good.

Overall I am very pleased with the iPad version of Bento. The one feature that I would really like to see would be the ability to either export or send via email a record from Bento; there is currently no option to export data from Bento for iPad.

If you have an iPad and need to have a database with you, you will love Bento. Anyone from parents managing their kids schedule to a small business can use the portability and power Bento has to offer. For only $4.99, you are getting a huge value.  If you aren’t the creative type, you can always download templates from Bento’s Template Exchange.

Don’t let the plethora of iPad games fool you, productivity apps aren’t sitting this launch out, with everyone from Bento, to GoodReader, to Readledocs getting in on the action.

Bento [$4.99 - iTunes link], from Apple-owned Filemaker, brings the same incredible ease of use and powerful template system that distinguishes both Mac and iPhone/iPod touch versions to the iPad. Touch to edit choice, date, ratings, and checkboxes. Tap to watch videos, photos, or send emails, and browse web sites without leaving the app. New themes like notebook, clipboard, and glass can be applied to any library, and the 25 custom (and customizable!) templates range from event planning, time billing, recipes, classes, dieting and more. 15 field types are supported including text, numbers, choice, checkbox, media, time, date, durations, currency, rating, address, phone number, email, URL and IM Account

GoodReader Tablet Edition [$0.99 - iTunes link] brings its elegant handling of monstrous PDF and TXT to the iPad with big screen versions of what made the iPhone app’s feature set so powerful. Besides its speedy text search capability, GoodReader’s includes active hyperlinks, and auto-scroll feature, and “PDF Reflow” that extracts text from a PDF file and displays it as simple TXT. GoodReader provides access to MobileMe iDisk, box.net, MyDisk.se, etc. and “server style” support for DropBox and Google Docs.

ReadleDocs [$4.99 - iTunes link] also brings iPhone and iPod touch power to the iPad with document viewing, file managing, and attachment saving. Pull documents from your Windows or Mac, Email, or cloud storage solution of choice (iDisk, Box.net, DropBox, etc.) and save them locally so you can always have them with you. You can transfer files over Wi-Fi or 3G, and read all iPhone OS supported document formats, including PDF and password-protected PDF with full search, reflow, and extraction.

More sneak peaks at upcoming iPad apps, this time Bento, Twitterrific, Yahoo!, the Pinball (Tap or click the images above to see the full versions).

MacRumors showed off Bento for iPad, big brother to the iPhone version and little brother to the Mac’s. Made by Apple’s FileMaker subsidiary it will be available at launch and feature the great look and feel and ready made templates we’ve come to expect. $4.99.

App Advice got their hands on Twitterrific for iPad and it’s gorgeous. I’d go out on a limb and say it looks better than both the iPhone and Mac versions. One of the original Jailbreak and App Store apps (in general, never mind simply Twitter apps), we kind of hoped they’d be on the iPad day one and as usual the Icon Factory doesn’t disappoint. There looks to be both Free (with ads) and $4.99 in-app upgrade (no ads, multiple accounts) options, just like the iPhone.

9to5Mac has several screens up for Yahoo!’s iPad app. Why would a website need an iPad app? Other than to tie-into the launch-day hype, a dedicated native app is likely giving them more power and control to present their data than the platform-agnostic web. They’re also using style elements like wood and shelves, along with the iPad-like combination of top-screen graphics and bottom-screen lists. We’re guessing it will be free.

TUAW shows off some screens from The Pinball for iPad from Gameprom, which they say is a “vast improvement” over similar iPhone games. It combines Jungle Style, Deep, and Wild West into one game with camera modes, realistic physics, camera tilt, 3D sound, and shaking! No word on price yet.

Chad’s Pick: Bento

This week I am picking the Bento app from FileMaker. There are several apps out there that can keep track of passwords and other data. What is nice about Bento is that you can make these databases yourself! You can edit fields, make lists and choose data types. If you own Bento for Mac, you can sync the data between apps! For $4.99, Bento is a great value for simple database creation. [$4.99 - iTunes link]

Chris’ Pick: Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs is a fun, quick paced pseudo-shooting game (for some reason it reminds me of Space Invaders). In the game, you try to keep your sleeper asleep by shooting the various monsters that try to wake him up. Different monsters have different weaknesses (when you can “shoot” them, for example). Succeed and your sleeper gets a good night sleep. [$1.99 - iTunes link]

Jeremy’s Pick: The North Face Snow Report

Snowboard/Ski season is fast approaching so my pick is the Snow Report. It’s free and you get a slick user interface, detailed information on any resort you select, trail maps, built in Twitter support, etc… Nifty little app that anyone interested in skiing or snowboarding should pick up.[$Free - iTunes link]

Matt’s Pick: RedLaser

RedLaser is created by Occipital, which has that nifty barcode scanning technology (used in foodscanner as well.) The application scans barcodes with ease and has recently come to my aid in purchasing books. After it scans, it pulls up results from Amazon, Google and other locations, letting you know where the cheapest place to purchase is. If you’re one of those people that like to compare prices while at the store, this might just be the perfect app for you! [$1.99 - iTunes link]

Rene’s Pick: Canabalt

Canabalt is a highly simplified, highly stylized — indeed pixelized — game where you race across rooftops, jump over obstacles, leap between buildings, crash through windows, avoid bombs and collapsing construction, and otherwise do everything you can just to keep running. If you hit something you slow down, if you don’t, you speed up, and if you mistime a jump, you fall, crash or get vaporized and the game is over. How far can you run? [$1.99 - iTunes link]

FileMaker was gracious enough to provide TiPb with a walkthrough of their just-released Bento for iPhone and iPod touch ($4.99 – iTunes link). Coming as it does from a wholly-owned Apple subsidiary, Bento shows every bit as much polish as the built-in iPhone apps. Features include:

• 25 pre-designed, ready-to-use templates that can be quickly customized with a few taps.
• Create your own forms to organize virtually any data on an iPhone or iPod touch.
• Tap to call a contact, view a Web site, send an email or display a map all while in a Bento library or collection.
• Manage anything from contacts and club members to projects, parties, medical bills and vehicle maintenance.
• View libraries and collections, create new records, edit details, sort data, modify forms – even use the iTunes-style search to find information quickly on the go.
• Select from 15 field types including text, numbers, choice, checkbox, media, time, date, durations, currency, rating, address, phone number, email, URL and IM Account.
• Wireless Synchronization between Bento for iPhone and iPod Touch and Bento 2 for Mac
• Works with built-in iPhone apps Contacts, Safari, Phone Dialing, Mail and Google Maps

An updated version of Bento 2 for the Mac is shipping at the same time, which is required for the sync to function. There’s no support for multiple iPhone to Bento 2 Mac sync yet, though you can manually sync one device after the other. Likewise, Apple doesn’t allow hooks into the Calendar (yet?!) but for things like Contacts, Bento for iPhone’s ability to mirror the built in Contacts database, and then transparently superset it with extra data (i.e. you could add a star rating to all your friends) is very impressive.

Most impressive, however, is the typical Apple-esque ease of use. Bento does a lot of heavy lifting so users, whether exclusively on the iPhone, or syncing between iPhone and desktop, don’t have to.
